I remember him as the evil Roschmann in the "Odessa File" but for me the bloody minded bastard Captain Stransky from "Cross of Iron".

Farewell.

He was also in the great Paratrooper movie classic "A Bridge too far" but then again so was nearly every other big name actor of the time. :)

The mark of a good actor is to do the material in a straight-forward fashion no matter how big or small the part as a 'working actor'. Part of the fun of watching some one entertain you (an actor's primary function as Tom Cruise admitted) is to study how they do it; with the best , you 'can't see the strings move'. With Mr.Schell you never saw the strings move; he was, like George C Scott in Patton for example, the thing he portrayed...in character, the mark of a craft-master! A Fabulous and long, Oscar winning career: now on a higher stage. At the end, like Oliver Reed in Gladiator, he was still on set, working , "in harness" to the end...Whadda way to go! :salute:

RIP!

"Captain Stransky (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0001703/?ref_=tt_trv_qu): I will show you how a true Prussian officer fights.
Sargeant Steiner (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000336/?ref_=tt_trv_qu): Then I will show you, where the Iron Crosses grow"

From IMDB Schell personal qoutes:

When asked by journalists in Vienna (his family's home) what I enjoy most about living and working in North America, I answered, "Freedom." The reporters told me, "We're sorry, Mr. Schell; but it needs to be something else, because we can't print that." So I rest my case.

"I am America's number-one fan. I like your food. Especially corn flakes."

R.I.P.

I liked him in Cross of Iron, and A Bridge too Far.

It seems like I've seen him in a lot of other films, but none of the titles in the list look familiar. :hmmm:

Old thread, sorry...I thought he was great in 'The Young Lions', along side of Marlon Brando, Dean Martin, and Montgomery Clift.

In fact I am watching it as I post this :)
