Is the installation of SH3 on Win 8.1 straight forward or have yo got to fiddle about like you had to with Vista? Also for some obscure reason SH5 wont run my lappy exceedes the reqs by a huge mile!

I don't have Win8.1 myself, but not installing into the default location the Program Files folder still holds well I believe.

As for SH5, I suggest you provide a bit more information about how or what goes wrong when you run SH5. And post it in the appropriate forum section.

I installed a full SH3, GWX, JSGME ,Mods and SHcommander only a couple of weeks ago.

Just make sure its a clean installation and put it into a folder on its own. DO NOT allow it to instal in the designated C drive folder.
I put mine into its own folder in the D drive.

Runs perfectly. Here's how for W8

Clean install (own folder outside automatic folder designation by your PC)
Do not run the game
Run 1.4 patch
Do not run game
Set up JSGME
Do not run game
Set up SH Commander
Go for it Captain

Thats for DVD in the reader, for running without the DVD in the drive you will need to add the SH3 cracks in at the stage before 1.4 patch upgrade.

Sink em all.......

I dont have SH5 so cannot offer any advice...but I would think its the same as SH3 set up, with you creating the file and folder destinations

any sugestions as to the destinatin folder?

Pretty much anything OTHER than the default one which is usually c /program files/ubisoft/ silent hunter etc

What I did was create a folde called silent hunter in my D drive (if you dont have a partition drive then create it in my computer c drive). When you ar at installation stage and the game suggests you load it in c/cprogram files/ ubisoft....whatever ...YOU browse to the folder YOU created and select THAT NEW FOLDER as the destination for the game...that shold be enough...easy peasy...

Let me know if you need more help

You can find the 1.4 patch here:

http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/downloads.php?do=cat&id=56

Last post at the bottom.
Just mke sure you choose the corret one for your set up.

I am assuming European DVD retail patch is what you require.
The readme should have it all

GWX website too

http://thegreywolves.com/downloads/

Or simply google 1.4 patch for european dvd disc

andym

When you upload it you may have to run the starforce removal tool first, but thats not a hassle.
Just upload it and lets see what happens.

You can DL the removal tool and if it is not protected it will let you know, then you can move on to "playing without DVD in drive" patch then to "1.4 patch" and onto playing this bad boy.

This programme cannot update the installed version of Silent Hunter3 EMEA DVD 1.0 to 1.3 because of the following reason

Any ideas?

How new is the copy? If the date on the box says 2008 or newer then it is already patched, and as an added plus it doesn't contain StarForce. An alternative is to run the game out of the box. If the loading screen says '1.3' then you're already good to go.

andym

Its v 1.5 so i will bite the bullet and go for it.

I spoke too soon.Installed GWX,ran it,start was in Keil,i was to patrol AN block,my start position you would assume would be Kiel. But NO,it was about 100 Nm from the coast of ghana. So i exit and decide to start later on in the War starting from Lorient, get the loading screen then all of a sudden a black screen! Not a full screen but one like i am getting in SH5 !I have yet to see if the vanilla version will work.

That may be a problem caused by a corrupt file - I found that my starting position was somewhere off the coast of Ghana when I tried to start from Königsberg - that was because that particular port had been omitted from my version of the file: Data/Menu/en_menu.txt

Since then it refuses to start.Would a reinstall of GWX be an idea?At present i am just finding mods to make the vanilla game better.

Yes, make sure you un-install cleanly through Programs and Features. This should get rid of any registry settings that might cause problems. Then, if anything of SH3 remains delete any folders belonging to SH3; which are the install folder and the one in (My) Documents. I suspect your previous patching attempts were done in the wrong order or something.

You mention you got it patched up to version 1.5. That does not make sense, as SH3 never got higher than 1.4b. You must be mistaken with SH4 I think.

You also tried to apply patch EMEA 1.0 to 1.3. But wasn't possible because a file was wrong. First of all, there should be an all-inclusive patch all the way to 1.4b for EMEA here (as you are from the UK):

http://www.silenthunteriii.com/uk/updates.php

First install Silent Hunter 3 cleanly, I suggest a folder named c:\games\SilentHunter3.

Don't run the game yet, but apply the patch to 1.4b first.

Now do a test run of the game.

If the above went well, consider applying mods, like GWX.

No you must download the GWX files and then run the application from the file folder you just downloaded...it does everything itself and adds in JSGME for you

Hello John, sorry for jumping in. I have been following your suggestions to get SH3 loaded on my late 2013 macbook pro. I am currently running Windows 8 pro in it's own partion. My first attempt with the SH3 CD failed with the default directory for installation. I have created ANOTHER drive within the Windows 8 side of my computer, to not install in the default directory as you suggested. The installation will not allow the separate folder. I get an error: Specified folder is invalid, incomplete, or write protected. Please select a valid install path. I have played with the settings of this folder, to try and allow it to write to it, to no avail. Any suggestions from the community would be appreciated. Thanks to all for keeping this great game still active!

Sorry but I have no knowledge of the Mac OS :-? and how it configures the separate windows partition to be able to advise you.
Maybe someone else might be able to suggest what steps to take

Apologies

I have no experience with Mac OS either. But what folder path did you try do put it in then? Maybe you tried another place that happens to be restricted by Microsoft.

Usually I just replace the \Program Files\Ubisoft\ part with \Games\ in the path specification text box. As I don't mind it is in the C-drive. Or potentially you need to create the folder manually on the drive, instead of letting the installation software do it.

Not sure if this helps but i put it in c:/silent3Ok, but windows folder paths use \ as seperator-markers. In contrast to Unix/Linux, of which Mac OS is a derivative I understand. So that could be the reason it was not accepted when you entered it.

It was him that got the error: Specified folder is invalid, incomplete, or write protected. But I responded to you. Sorry.

To be honest, I am also lost on what your current state of affairs is with installing SH3 again. Did you already make a new clean install of the game? And if so, what was the result of installing GWX again? Please be specific about symptoms, and at which point in the game things don't work right.

Thanks for asking.Yes i have managed to get SH3 to run although there is a small graphical artifact that sort of spoils the aesthetic look of the game but i can live with it.I have got JGSME working a treat. As to the GWX i havent reloaded it.Initially i ran it and ended up off the coast of Africa instead of Kiel harbour. So i quit the Patrol and went off to another base other than Kiel.On the "loading screen" the bar got to about 3/4 the way along when the screen became black and was about 2/3 of normal size off to the top left of my scren.(this is similar to the SH5 issue i have except that window isnt black and it has no sound as the intro plays)I did not that GWX did infact correct the graphics artifact but then as i said on the next patrol it all went as bit tits up.

Excuse my stupidity but can i install another SH3 using a differnet destination folder?I dont want it to interfere with my current set up as i am doing rather well,LOL

Pisces
02-14-14, 10:47 AM
Yes, you should be able to have multiple installations of SH3, each with their own folder. I have never used it myself, so I can't help there. But you will need to use the MultiSH3 mod. As the game expects your campaign saves and gameconfig to be in only one folder, the Documents\SH3 folder. This mod is used to switch between different 3-character named folders in Documents.

I just installed SH3 this afternoon after a long vacation..... too long.

It's a no go with my 8.1 so far. It's in the Games folder I created so it's not in the Ubisoft folder at all. Now this is an original dvd from back in 2005. It should have Starforce in it but I ran the removal tool and it said no Starforce found. And I got an error when I tried to run the sim. I do have the file with the info from the error report. But it shows nothing out of the ordinary that I can see.
