People say HoI2 was the best...I've never played 2...but I LOVE III.

I still have to get III's expansions too.

I read that they are going to dumb down the learning curve for IV

I hope they don't do it too much. The complexity of III is what makes it fun.

I think that HOI3s biggest problem was not so much the learning curve, it was poor tutorials and user interface, the information you wanted was not transmitted very well. Research was another example of something that was overcomplicated for complications sake.

Hopefully they'll fix this and make it more user friendly, and what's more, they'll leave enough integration room there for Victoria III which should hopefully be next, so there'll be a pathway from CKII to EUIV to Vicky III and then HOI IV, over a thousand years of gameplay. :yep:

Some more info: http://www.strategyinformer.com/pc/heartsofironiv/1089/preview.html

The bit about production is pretty interesting. That's one of the only areas that remained pretty undetailed even in HoI3 though it was a pretty critical factor in the actual war, so I'm glad to see it expanded.

I think Oberon is correct about HoI3's problems, which are not so much its actual complexity as the way the player is required to handle it. It's good to see that Paradox seems to be going for making it easier to control and handle the game rather than actually dumbing down the mechanics. Simplifying things en masse has always been the wrong way to make a wargame more playable, in my opinion.

Good to see that a some here are interested in this game too!

One thing that has always annoyed me on their forum is that people are asking a lot (some are legit other seems futile to me) but no one is asking fo a REAL ATLANTIC WAR!!!

To me convoys coming from North America were far from being a mere detail for the UK :timeout:

They were pretty useless in HoI2 too! (and all HoI2 expansions...:nope:)

It bugged me too in HoI3 and it was kind of too much (and that's why I didn't bother with HoI3)

Such an aspect like the battle of the Atlantic is too important to be ignored.

I've made a thread about it in their forum where I state that this time the u-boat threat is an absolute must, but only got 2 responses so far, I guess most of the HoI players care more about land battles.

(Don't get me wrong, I think that land warfare is great too, but I want more!)

All this talk about how good HoI2 is really makes me wish I grabbed it at the last sale too.... :wah:

In the meantime, I just might crack and get an expansion for III....just depends on how good my resolve is.

As you wish!

But keep in mind that as UK or USA, it's absolutely useless to invest (production or technology) in convoy defense.

And as Germany, it's absolutely useless to invest in convoy raiding...:nope:

Seriously, if they don't fix this with HoI4, I won't waste a minute on that game.

Yeah, but they'd lower supplies in the UK enough to make operations elsewhere easier to conduct, like in Africa. Actually getting them to surrender though usually involved the dreaded sea mammal. I only managed to pull that off once and then the US got involved, and the USSR rolled in from the east and it all got predictable after that.

East vs West looks good, although it's had a rather troubled lifespan, but I like the look of it, in particular the ability to customise naval units, and the increased focus on diplomatic and economic affairs, as befits the Cold War.

For me, it was just like learning to play a new sim. It was really hard to get into at first but I found it got easier once I learned to play some other Paradox Games.

EU3 was a good one to start with IMHO. Easy to learn and fun to play. And once you can figure out one of these, it's not too hard to figure out all of them.

I just wish they'd get it straight what was happening. I think originally the Paradox Plaza page said they were shooting for Q3/4 of 2013...and now it's been delayed and whatnot.

I just hope it's released as a completed game and not a broken, unmoddable piece of crap.

I like the board game. Fun to play...but HoI is obviously better with it being a PC game and all.

You can be a nerd all by yourself with a PC and people don't care but when you start asking to play "Axis and Allies" at a gathering the room clears pretty quick.

Back to World War 2 we go, for some intense, detailed, slow-burn strategy. The Hearts of Iron series has typically been a daunting prospect because, well, look at it, but the fourth entry will be different. A buff 3.0 edition of the Clauswitz engine powers the sandbox. The oppressive grey backgrounds of old have been replaced by muted colours, and an adaptive interface that outlines and shades countries depending on your zoom level. A night/day sine wave washes slowly across the map, separating the brushed iron surface into sunlit and blue moonlit zones. The units are no longer featureless rectangles, but tiny models that can be guided around with multi-phase battle plans. These are sculpted with stretched, curving arrows and broken lines, depicting troop movements and battle lines respectively. I'm surprised Paradox haven't put out any screenshots yet; this is a very inviting strategy game.Hearts of Iron 4 first look: a slick return for the veteran World War 2 strategy series (http://www.pcgamer.com/2014/01/30/hearts-of-iron-4-first-look-a-slick-return-for-the-veteran-world-war-2-strategy-series/)

This is World War 2 without the plot points. You take charge of any country you fancy and set yourself a grand plan - play as Portugal and invade Australia, for example.

As someone who likes Alternate History, this pleases me, I just hope that they don't wedge Germany into the Axis corner, the USSR into the Comintern and UK/France into Allies, so that Germany can ally with the UK, and so on and so forth.

I liked the concept of the factions in HoI3 but the faction triangle was still too rigid. I'm having a hard time putting what I'm thinking of into words, but I think they should come up with some sort of system that dynamically creates factions based on relative military strengths and tensions between ideologically-opposed alliances, so that rather than having predefined factions the game will start with only the historical alliances between countries and then the factions start to appear and consolidate over the course of the game as events start to escalate. Err, if that makes any sense...

A bit like the coalition system from EUIV, but taking into account political ideology and existing tensions.
It sounds like it could be do-able, but if they're streamlining the political side of things a bit, then adjusting your style of government would have to be done through an easier method than picking political leaders.
Of course, the primary problem is that the game starts in 1936, so you've got a limited window of opportunity to create those factions before somebody starts invading somebody else. It would be nice if you could swing things around though, have the Allies refuse to help the Comintern, or have the Axis work with the Allies against them. I'd say Axis and Comintern vs the Allies but that would be hax, perhaps do-able if you had the option to coup Hitler with a left-wing uprising...but given the conditions in Germany around 1936...can't see it happening.
Would be nice though. Nice to have the groundwork of a system where you can take a nation wherever you like.

I hope 4 is more like Darkest Hour.

I really really like the tech system in DH/2. Tech Teams need to come back. 3's Tech System is more complicated than it needs to be. Also, the factions. I like it better in HoI2/DH. You are more free in which side to join and who to ally with.

Now if you would excuse me, I'm off to finish the invasion of Australia. :D

Here's what I posted on the Paradox forums in a thread called "My whishes for HOIV". Sorry Oberon if I hijacked your idea about the EUIV coalition system, but I do like that I idea.

I wouldn't mind seeing the time line start maybe 1933 or 1934, instead of 1936 being the earliest start time.

Also as for things like research, espionage, diplomacy and officer recruitment shouldn't have to be bound how much leadership points a nation has. Research should be based on the construction of laboratories, technology, scientific discoveries and advancement. Espionage should be based on the ability, quality, and number of spies working, spies should be able to establish intelligence networks, commit acts of sabotage like destroying of ammo dumps, fuel storage, factories and so on, as to make spies more useful then they are currently in HoI3. Please get rid of the faction system that is in HoI3, it would open the door to more alternative history possibilities plus the Allies weren't the Allies until Germany invaded Poland just like the Axis wasn't the Axis until the Tripartite Pact was signed by Germany, Italy and Japan. Maybe there should be an event the create the major powers like the Allies and the Axis or have something like the coalition system from EUIV, but taking into account political ideology and existing tensions?

Recruitment of officers should just happen like it does in real life, battlefield promotions, ect.
Make it so submarines aren't totally useless, in HoI3 when I play as Germany I never bother building U-Boats since they are almost useless whereas in real life submarines carried out reconnaissance, mine-laying, dropped off spies.
Revamp the types of tanks and aircraft, as certain aircraft are redundant and some nations end up with prototype aircraft which in most cases never saw combat. Tanks should have to a certain degree subtype versions mounting different cannons or have specialized uses, i.e flamethrowers, bridging, mine clearance, recovery, and so on, well maybe not mine clearance unless there will be a way to implement anti-personal and anti-tank mines into the game.

Mixed feelings, to be honest. I was looking forward to the no-cancelled East vs West more than this. HOI 3 can be fun, but it's also a micro-management-ridden mess with a lot of problems to how it plays and how things are balanced. HOI 4 could very well over-compensate and become way too arcade-ish and simplistic.

I guess we will just have to wait and see.

Okay, so I've been following this for a while now. Summary of changes from HOI3:

There is now a Victoria II-ish factory system, where you assign factories to build things like tanks, aircraft and ships.
You use tanks as a "resource" to build tank divisions. As these divisions take losses, you will need to build more tanks to replace said losses.
The game now handles individual planes, not air wings, but they are automated to a much larger degree than in HOI3. All you need to do is assign which sector you want the planes to operate in.
You can draw battle plans with arrows and whatnot on the map and tell the AI to follow them.

Gameplay footage on YouTube here (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LxGNpPz_W2A).

Release is rumoured to be in around Q1 of 2015. Too early to count days, but looking forward if not to the release, then to when things start to look finished so that the devs can start giving us more info and weekly dev diaries.

The latest diaries are on air combat, air techs and the experience/variants system. All looking very promisin. Especially like how instead of fixed classes like "Interceptor" or "CAS" there are now plane models, such as "P-51 Mustang" or "Ju-87 Stuka" with base stats that you can customize further. So if you have a Hurricane, for example, and want to use it as a base for a carrier fighter, bombers or interceptor, just create a new template and call it "Hurricane B" or whatever, customize its stats, and off you go.

A new addition is how you need experience from peace-time maneuvers or wars to actually ask your militiary to change things; this is to prevent players from making too much use of hindsight. Very interesting concept, looking forward to seeing how it works out in-game!
