Hello all,

I took a couple years off SH3, but came across my SH3 box in the closet and I'm hooked once again. :yeah:

Anyways, here is my question.
I typically avoid warships at all costs, but every once in a while I have no choice when a destroyer makes a bee line to my periscope at full speed.

When this does happen, I usually turn straight into the path of warship, cut the engines and queue up a Magnetic torpedo with fast setting.
I then open the torpedo door, wait until precisely 1000 meters range and then squeeze the trigger.
This survival tactic usually works, but the ship usually makes an emergency turn to starboard (Right) just before the torpedo arrives.

My question is:
Do the warships always turn to the starboard side when making an emergency turn, is it based on other calculations, or randomized with AI?

If you're using the TI torpedo every time unless its night because they can see the wake. If you use the TII or any of the electrics they should stay on course, I don't think they're hydrophones are sensitive enough to pick up a torpedo.

But to answer you question, they will typically turn away from you not towards you.

Yeah, I'm still using T1's as it's early in the war.
They seem to spot my torpedo every time at approximately 100 meters, and then they always break hard to the starboard side, and if I'm lucky I hit them in the props.
I'm going to start compensating by aiming just to the left of warship before firing.

Your best bet is to either hit them at close range so they wont have time to evade or use the TII electrics since they don't have a wake that can be spotted.

With practice (and grey hair), you can pick off a pursuing destroyer with your stern tubes. It's always easier with electrics. They can see the wake of steamers and will take evasive action. You can still hit them with steamers, but you should hold your fire until 500 meters.

I usually end up doing this anyway, because at least half the time the escorts do not come straight in, they approach you with a zig-zag course. Hitting them when they do this is very hard and you only have one shot.

Even when they zig-zag, they will straighten out at about 400 meters and come straight in on their attack run. Your torpedo needs 200 meters to arm. So you will be cutting it very, very close.

You'll want to have your fish set at the correct depth and as a magnetic fuse and have the outer door open and ready to fire. Constantly adjust your course as he pursues you to keep your tail pointed directly at him. You don't want the torpedo to have to make any curve adjustment as it leaves the sub. You want an absolute straight shot.

As soon as the destroyers stops zigging, fire down his throat. With an electric, he won't change course. With a steamer, he will, but he won't be able to react in time.

Sit back and watch the fireworks! :)

You can also pull this off the the bow tubes while going full reverse but if you miss you may not be able to get out of the way in time to avoid getting rammed.

As on a previous post and a bit of a dicey maneuver: Attack the destroyer HEADON (throat shot) with a high set speed steamer set at one meter depth at a range of approx. 700 yards; the high speed of the eel offsets the destroyer's closing speed against the eels arming distance of 300 meters. IF IT MISSES, revert to riverboat gambler(icy cool) mode: go to 20 meters at full speed to pass under the destroyer, with scope (slightly lowered) still viewing. His depth charges at full tilt speed should miss as too deep or not close enough. As he passes astern, rise quickly back to periscope depth and take him with a rear tube. If that misses, dive but do not crash(save your air) to the 'basement' to run silent; seat yourself between the jumbos in the engine room on the communal B-spülverKann and prepare to have your 'lily guilded'.
