Well I have just about decided to take the literal dive into subsimming, I have recently being doing a lot of research into what would be the best fit for me and I will elaborate on that momentarily.

I may be new to the sub genre but I am no noob when it comes to sims, over the past couple years I have gone from a fairly general gamer to slightly obsessive over flight sims. My main calling is the F-16 in Falcon BMS and I fly over at the 1st VFW(not as much as I would like lately, damn studies), I also fly aircraft in the DCS world.

On to what I am looking for subsimming. After doing some research it seems that a modded version of silent hunter 4 is going to be the way to go for my introduction. I am looking for the most realistic experience in the operations of the boat, the weather, and all the other things that I will learn about that I currently have no clue of. Mods that I am currently looking at aiming at realism in the sim are things like real fleet boat and run silent run deep, but I would also greatly appreciate any mods that would enhance the realism.

I am also curious as to where the best place to buy SH4 would be. I have read that buying from steam can sometimes result in some issues? I know there are also U-boat missions available which I may in time get to but first I want to focus on the main sim with mods like RFB and RSRD in mind.

So why flight and subsims you ask? My favorite movies from my childhood include Top Gun and The Hunt for Red October... I guess that has bled off to my interests nowadays.

ps I also love kerbal space program!

Welcome aboard!

I´m Captain in British Airways Virtual on MSFS9 and also I love subsims. No problem here with polygamy. :Kaleun_Wink:

Thanks guys, I also plan on eventually getting into some other flight sims like FSX or xplane 10, but one thing at a time. Any info on whether or not steam is the place to go to pick up silent hunter 4 given the mods I have in mind?

WELCOME
TO
SUBSIM!

Unlike Silent Hunter 5, it doesn't matter wether or not you get SH4 from Steam or not (I'd recommend getting the Steam version). As for mods, take your pick.

Trigger Maru Overhauled
Real Fleet Boat ( partially made by LukeFF, a Rise of Flight tester)
Cold Warriors Steel Sharks (Cold War subs)
Battle for the Baltic (Russian campaign, unfortunately it's hard to find and all the links to patches are broken)
We Dive At Dawn (Royal Navy operations)
My upcoming Japanese campaign mod (with the Jyunsen B mod a neccessary install for it to work)

BTW, I like DCS too, but IL2 will always be my one true love.

Thanks guys, hopefully I can start figuring out how to sub this week. So cybermat thanks for letting me know the steam version should be solid. I have been looking at mods for a while and I narrowed it down to rfb or tmo. I read a post claiming rfb was aimed more towards realism so I'm leaning towards that alongside run silent run deep.

Thanks red october . So I am looking on steam and it seems in order to get updated to 1.5 I need to purchase the U-boat missions. Can anyone confirm? I ask because I believe the mods I am going to run are set to 1.5. The steam forums seem full of conflicting data and misinformation...

edit: So I procrastinated my studies a bit and dug around a bit for more info. It seems steam is just fine as long as I get the U-boat missions which include the patch to 1.5.

Yeah. You need 1.5 to mod the game.

Started my first patrol today! Nothing to throw fishes at yet but i nearly got kamikazied on the way in, had to fumble the controls to crash dive and evade. Luckily no damage taken, now the hunt begins

I am really enjoying the sim thus far, but I have been plagued by completely random CTDs.... I have absolutely no idea what to troubleshoot for due to the randomness. I have already done the large address aware fix and it did seem to make the game perform smoothly.

Mods I am running

RFB 2.0
RFB april patch
RSRDC - RFB
RSRDC patch v5xx
SAP .5 for RFB RSRDC
ship info RFB
ship info RFB RSRDC

I used to have a problem with a lot of the textures being white followed by a crash(only upon first loading in never during), but that has not occurred since I made the large address aware fix. Now I only CTD randomly....frustrating especially when it happens right after a successful attack.
