Currently hiding after a semi-sucsessful convoy attack (2 torps at large comp freightor- one hit, sink. 4 torps (bow + stern) at passenger liner- all miss. I need more practice! she is holed from a deck gun shot though), and though I have a destroyer that seemed as it had good ping on me, and a few more en route.... 10 mins in and no depth charges. Was kinda expecting more response. They shot at me while I was doing my surface rune (and missed) but no follow up. Am I just being impatient?

Playing RFB 2.0, hard difficulty. Just north of Luzon 9th Dec 1941

What you describe hardly seems out of character with the IJN, especially early in the war. The Japanese weren't renown for their persistence in ASW. Hunting a US sub to exhaustion almost never happened. All too frequently, when a US sub suceeded in breaking contact, the attacking escort simply abandoned the search too soon to regain contact. They would often chalk it up as a victory though.

If you want more of a challenge try TMO, but as stated early way detection is rather novice.

When during the war do they become more adept and aggressive ?

Roughly, about late 1943-early 1944. That's when Japanese destroyers and escorts start to routinely have radar fitted and that an effort was made by the Japanese to increase the amount of resources devoted to ASW. You start to see more proper convoys and less single ship sailings. Japanese escorts get the Type 2 depth charge with a lot more punch than the Type 95. However, it's all relative though to the IJN's lackluster beginnings in ASW. You won't be seeing any ahead-firing weapons equivalent to the Hedgehog or Squid or clouds of ASW aircraft.
