View Full Version : Best visual and hydro targetin methods
Hello!
I've looked a lot of videos nowadays and there were a lot of useful information in them about the methods with you can calculate the enemy's speed/course/bearing etc.
So basically there are some good methods to use and the reason I opened this topic was I would like to know the BEST/ MOST PREFERABLE methods NAME. Just the name's are important because I'm quite sure that everybody can search for them in Youtube or Google. So just a top list. Starting from the most accurate/easiest/ moving or standing required methods. So once again no video is needed because probably I watched all of them. Just I'm curious that what other skippers prefer, use in their games. Maybe there are some easier/better/faster ways than mine so I would like to know them.
Maybe if a specific method require some unique mod you can mention them if you would like because I consider that important too.
For example:
Hydro:
1. 4th bearing method
2. Hydro, sonar bearing, range calculation method
Visual: 1. RAFOB
This is just strictly an example.
Edit: Forgot to mention 100% realistic, Real navigation based methods are what I really would like to know.
I am not an "active" SH5 player since long, but when I used to play my favorite hunting tactic was applying the 4 bearings method on far hydrophone contacts, and aligning my boat for a 90 deg solution. When contacts were close enough, I refined my solution by plotting on map visual bearings and ranges (the latter measured with the stadimeter). This gave me more accurate AoB's and, with some calculations speeds. Using this method I was fairly effective

I have go with gaps method, which is a mix of many. This tends to be the case with me and others. Each method as a place to be used it.
If its dark or really foggy, I will use hydrophone to plot course and speed of target. If I am visually able, I will do same but with periscope. If I am really close enough, I use clock to take speed use stadimeter to take range and use my own judgment to take AOB, which is pretty much the aspect ratio way.
I have never learned 4 bearings method, I'm sure when I do it will be added into my methods.
I've made a quick formula card I also use for, quick attacks.

You still need your heading and target heading, AOB is quickly calculated and easy changed if needed. This is for a close range to medium range attack.

Thank's guys, hope a lot of other skippers will write their prefered methods too.
Raven by the way the 4 bearing method is in my opinion the best hydrophone only attack but it requires some regular measurements but this is very accurate and quite learnable. And this way you don't need to have a visual at all.
But I think the best is to have 1 only visual and 1 only hydrophone tactic in your arsenal and in this case you can cope with whatever the weather is. (fog basically,or strom)

I haven't played SH5 yet, I'm still in 1940 in my SH3 career, but the method I've used and honed over the years is fast and simple. It's not very difficult to learn and it will allow you to attack convoys, lone ships, fast task forces etc.
The very first thing required for a good contact detonation is the angle of attack so you'll want a 90* angle or +/- 45* or so from the target's heading.
Roughly aim your boat directly towards the target ship and look at his bow, take out the sliding detailed compass that's in GWX and look at the inner ring while looking at his bow and judge his heading that way(there must be something similar to this in SH5). You'll probably be off but not more than 20* which is okay for now. Get his range and bearing and draw a line on the map with his course and align your boat 90* from it. I usually go for a surface attack from 2000m but if it's daylight submerge to periscope depth. Plot his path and speed by starting your stopwatch, go to your periscope and get his range and bearing then mark it on the map as quickly as you can. After a minute, take another bearing and range, mark it on your map. Do this at one minute and two minutes and three minutes and 15 seconds.
Use a nomograph and measure the one minute mark, see how fast that is. Compare it with the distance between mark 1 and 2 and then finally compare that with the distance between the mark at 0 and the mark at 3:15 seconds.
You should get a rough idea of his speed and his heading should be very accurately displayed on your map.
Align your boat at true 90* from his course and set your periscope/UZO at 0*...set up the TDC to show your are 90* on the port or starboard and then enter his speed. You can enter the range at the last minute and then just fire away, I've found that range estimates can be very forgiving, you can be off by 500m and still hit your mark.
Another way you can attack lone ships, ships that are travelling in lines, is to align your boat 120* or more from his heading. The reason for this is to hit ships INSIDE a convoy and ship outside at the same time or to allow the target to be in your area of attack for a MUCH longer period. Why would you want that? So it gives your guys time to reload eels and it also gives you more time to observe your prey and their actions.
Let's say a convoy his headed exactly 90* East...instead of aiming your boat due North, aim it at 320* and point your periscope at 40* now set the TDC to show 90*. Now you can see and hit ships inside the outer line and you can also give your guys time to load that precious one eel that may hit something else if the convoy is moving slow enough.
I'd like to draw something too but I don't have much time
