Once again I find myself setting sail on another new campaign. Once again I want to thank all the various contributors to TWOS for their hard work.
After many, many years of gaming this is the once game that I always end up coming back to time and again. I may take breaks of years in between campaigns, but TWOS never gets old for me, in the same way as SH3 modded before it.
It's amazing to me how this mod stands up to the test of time against all the new shiny, flashy games that I download, play, and then get bored with. If only Ubi had the foresight to embrace this mod and those like it wholeheartedly and officially, then perhaps their official games wouldn't die off so quickly.

Hi, i don't know if you heard this, but on Czech game magazine, there is an article about list of deprecated Ubisoft games which will loose online support and it says, Silent Hunter 5 will not be available to install officially (probably even from Steam).
Always keep your illegal ISOs.

This is in external view?
Game world is actually flat, not round - it "pretends" to be round by lowering objects that are far away so that they appear to be hidden behind Earth's curvature. This looks realistic from submarine conning tower which is positioned low so you don't see the "cheat" but if you move camera higher it becomes obvious.

External, from bridge. But other ship close to them is looking fine.
Why are ships displayed half underwater?
I think this is a try of fata morgana inferior effect on sea.

One of the propulsion commands you can give the chief engineer is "electric engine only" which presumable forces the electric engines to run on the surface. However, one I click on this, nothing happens. Is it broken or am I missing something?

Recently got a new computer and decided to install SH5 from Ubisoft (not available from Steam)
I have been trying to get TwoS to work for days with no luck I thought that I had read all there was on the subject and was about to give up when I as a last resort I fell upon this thread.
Is there now a work around to getting TWoS and the patcher working, If there is could some kind subsimmer point me in the right direction.

You don't need to re-install.
Just point the installer to an Empty folder and it will extract all the files into it.

Unlike some installers? There are no pre-condition checks in the Installer of some Mega Mods.
GWX 3 is one that does this pre-istalled check.
However.
GWX 3 DOES have a Backdoor that allows me to extract all the files to an empty folder.

Was toying around a bit trying enigma, what a workload! I need one of the ladies in their Wehrmachts gray.
Now a little problem, deciphered the message and send it to shiplog, but there it is also only encrypted.
Is the decrypted message save somewhere, or do I lose it when decrypting the next?

I decided to come back to Silent Hunter 5 after 6 years. I installed the mod with no problems, but there are two thing that makes me not 100% happy of the playing. Both of them happen in the same historical mission "The new merchant fleet":
1. There is no damage on the vessel after the torpedo hits. "3D ship damage" option either ON/OFF doesn't help. As I understand, this models were imported in the game by modders (so should be some limitations), but at least 2D damage should work, right? Strangly enough, in the mission where "stock" ships are used, only 3D damage works. If I switch it OFF, no damage is shown at all.
2. The smokes (both from the ship engines and fires due to damage) disappear at some distances, when the external camera is used. And in weird way: when you are close to the ships, you can see the smokes, you are getting far away they disappear suddenly, but if you continue to move away they start being rendered again. The "no-render" distance is very narrow actually, no reason for that. So it is definitely a bug. I have all graphical settings on Max. The video of the bug "in action":

Stock models as well as Rosomaha's C3 and my coasters use different 3d format (.gr2) than most of imported models which use .dat format of previous Silent Huner games. Only .gr2 format supports 3D damage and only .dat format supports 2D damage sprites, which is why you will see either one or another. Furthermore, damage does not always appear (that is true both for 2D and 3D damage.)

Interesting. I haven't noticed this before. From your video it is for both .dat and .gr2 ships so probably not ship LOD issue, but something with smoke effect itself, but other than that - no idea what causes it.

I'm done yesterday a test of this behavior in the campaign (August 1943) where I have a convoy with more as 30 ship + 8 or 10 escort ship in front of me and I do not have this issue/bug with the smoke.
Is there a way to stop to bob and weave we get during the exterior view of the boat? I don't mind the rocking and such when I'm on it but when viewing from afar I'd rather I wasn't flying all around the sky during storms.

Did you make sure to go into the SH5.exe's properties & un tag it as "read only"... :hmmm:

I have downloaded the TWoS mod and update ran both exe's selected the mods I wanted installed. Is there any visual difference when TWoS is installed I see absolutely nothing different.

First, I have to apologize for my absence here on Subsim, lot of stuff happen during the past year for me, both good and bad, so I really couldn't spare much time for modding and answering your questions. My PC is also quite old now and until I replace it my internet access is mostly reduced to my phone, which isn't the best thing for modding and forums, you'll have to agree. :) However, I've managed to squeeze in few hours and fix some errors I stumbled upon couple of months ago.
I'm really glad to see that The Wolves of Steel community is still very much alive and active!:Kaleun_Salute:

Ok guys, in light of doubts whether SH5/TWoS will still work after Ubisoft's recent shenanigans, I tried a little experiment: uninstalled SH5 and TWoS, purged all traces of them from my computer, and reinstalled them to see if a fresh install will be working.
This is Steam version of the game, on Windows 7.
Result:
- Steam installation completed normally, but after trying to launch stock game I got "Ubisoft Launcher error code 1".
- Got around it by downloading Ubisoft Connect and installing it. When I tried to launch it, got another error "Procedure CreateDXGIFactoery2 could not be located in dxgi.dll".
- This error can be worked around by using older version of upc.exe executable and overwriting it over the upc.exe in Ubisoft Game Launcher folder (thanks @derstosstrupp for this solution)
- After doing this, stock game launches just fine.
- Next step, TWoS installation: works as usual, no additional problems here. Just follow the instructions.
Only annoying thing is that "Procedure CreateDXGIFactory" error keeps showing up when launching game through KSDCommander, but if you just click "Ok" the game will continue to launch normally.
So, shame on Ubisoft for screwing up their launcher, but you can still get around their screwups and play the game as before.

I just had to do a Steam re-install due to computer woes, and when I downloaded and installed the Steam app, I did my usual routine of NOT installing it in Program Files (x86). When I went to download and re-install SH5, I noticed on the install menu that there is now a "Install into" dropbox that looks like it might let me choose where to put the game... has anyone tried to use that, and does it eliminate the need to create a Steam Library folder that is not in a Program Files folder? Just curious. I am in the process still of wading into the shark infested Ubisoft Connect waters, and we'll see in a while how well I do getting TWoS going again... :arrgh!:
Edit 1206 hours: Game install completed, and it does run - it did take a bit of arm twisting to get Steam to run the game, but UConnect is updated also, and has all of my other Ubisoft downloaded games, as well as the Steam SH5... Here goes TWoS... :salute:
Edit 1615 hours: Piece of cake, nothing to it, easy-peasy - I must be getting used to the routine. No issue whatsoever with TWoS install:

I have the DVD SH5 Gold installed, latest version of Ubi Connect, TWoS...and no problem starting game online mode with UC and saving and loading games from Ubi cloud. All is as ever in my installation.

Try to post few random screenshots of the problem. Also, delete everything SH5 related form "my documents" folder (including your Uconnect gameaves) and try to start new campaign.:yep:

I don't remember what file the UZO used to try to edit it.
I also tried to change the compatibility of SH5, but nothing to do.
However from what I have read in the forum I would not be the only one to have these problems.

Coming back to TWOS after about a year. Everything worked before. I've added no new mods. Only change is that I'm now on Win11, not Win10. Video driver is updated.
If I have to start a new campaign anyway, I'll use TWOS 2.2.25 and let you all know how it goes.

I tried different combinations to use TWoS with Windows 11 and with my desktop configuration, updated to drivers 526.47 with RTX2060S graphics card and 32 GB of Ram, the only valid combination for me is to use TWoS 2.2.23 and not 2.2.25 with Windows 7 compatibility.
With Windows 11 with my configuration there are too many instabilities in SH5 and in the recognition manual however only white background, no ship images even with version 2.2.23.
I've never had any problems with Windows 10!

-Changing NVIDIA drivers did not help.
-Starting a new campaign did not help.
-I went to vanilla SH5 and the UZO and recognition manuals were fine.
-I then made a clean install of SH5, and TWOS 2.2.25. The UZO is still square and all now, all white, and the recognition pictures pages are still blank.
-Must be a Win11 incompatibility. For now, I'll rely on my crew to recognize the ship type. I can still get mast height, length, and draft from the recog. manual.
-Worth it to still play this game!

I use a laptop with Win 11 Home 64-bit version 22H2, 16GB of RAM and a Nvidia RTX 3050 graphics card. Both the operating system and the graphics drivers were upgraded to the latest versions last week. I have the Steam installation of SH5 and after the install I ran the Polish campaign in vanilla right through to the docking in Kiel. Only once this was done did I do an upgrade to TWoS 2.2.25 and then start a fresh British East Coast campaign. So far, I have not had any issues, CTD or graphical issues, so I consider myself lucky to be able to enjoy SH5 while others have not been so fortunate.
I have no experience with SH5 on Win11, because I'm already on Win10, but I suspect that it will be an issue on Win11, since there were similar problems here, for example: https://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=253662
If you haven't tried it yet, it's best to install SH5 and also TWoS as admin in compatibility mode with Win10 or Win7, because I don't think it's due to any drivers.
BTW, does SH5 need the C++ Redistributable?

Warning: SM Interior Food Stock is problematic with your graohics if you use external cameras. It is recommended to use food stocks only without external cameras active. If you use external cameras, use GrenSo environment and disable Food Stock.
Try your installation:
1) with external cameras and without food stocks.
2) without external cameras and food stocks actuve.
See if this solve your issue.

I will likely play without external camera (hardly ever use it except for screenshots) and without the food stocks. Maybe after starting a new patrol things will shake out?

That looks like your scope page files are missing/corrupted.
I don't have my computer running but check your menu/gui, menu/layout, menu/pages (folder names approximate) folders.
you might also have the DDS files missing/in wrong folder, or the page folders *.ini file referencing the wrong DDS file.

What you see here is the base DirectX screen layout, and the page ini files overlay the DDS images on top of this.
SH series uses a layered image approach.

Things are getting stranger...
I did a clean install of stock SH5, and TWOS 2.2.25 full. For about 20 minutes of real time in game, everything was working fine. Charts, recog manual, UZO.
I did a mid patrol save in the middle of the sea. No contacts. Not submerged. Down in the control room. Resumed game: UZO - square white image. Recog: square white image where ship should be. Charts: just white images.
Exited to desktop, reloaded, and everything was still screwy.
I'm totally stumped!
EDIT: I think it has to do with the files ending in .TDW, which from the time stamps, get recopied to the main folder every time you load a save. Maybe they get corrupted in the process... but why only in Win11???

If I delete the Silent Hunter 5 folder and copied all SH5-TWOS files from an unplayed backup it works fine... for awhile. In the image below, you see the user charts, and recog manual are fine, and the UZO looks normal.

So, Win11 can display things properly, but only for a time. Pressing 'O' for the clock messes everything again, instantly. Also, using the enigma decoder seems to also initiate the problem. Sometimes, not doing either of those actions, and the UZO and recog manual will still blank out.
BTW: I had excluded the Silent Hunter 5 folder from my antivirus sniffing around. Apparently, that was not enough to prevent recurrence of the problem.
Unless someone has a breakthrough solution, I will just install Windows 10 on a bootable USB stick, along with UPlay, and Silent Hunter 5. I'm done wasting time getting this to work in Win11.
Thankfully, I do not need to do this with SH3 or SH4.

No, I was talking about simple dds files (textures) but it seems that the problem is much more deeper than that, system related. I'm not even sure where to start to look for the issues. :hmmm: The big question now is to narrow down why some win11 users have this problem while others don't...:hmmm:
Can you try next time instead of copying entire SH5 folder, copy just TDW_dragables and dll files. Will that also temporarily fix the problem?

Doesn't fix it! I have to copy all the files since I don't know which ones are being affected.
I don't want to speak too soon, but I think I've found a way to prevent the corruption of the user charts. I've set everything in the SH5 to read only except the files ending in .TDW, .ini, and the log folder and the KSDCommander files. Overkill, I know, and I need to eventually figure out what I can safely make readable. But by setting most files to read only status, I was able to play it for five hours yesterday, and even reload saves without seeing the problem occur! I've used the ENIGMA decoder without a problem as well. I'm still avoiding opening the clock, but I may find that to be OK as well.
Now that I've jinxed it, I'll have to see how the game is later tonight :03:
EDIT: Next day and user charts still work! UZO still works. Recog. manual is stuck on initial "other" picture and won't update image to new ships when you open tankers or merchants. It's some progress! Will see if I can get the recognition book glitch fixed.
@propbeanie: It's set to compatibility for windows 7 as it was when it was working fine under Win10. (I tried changing it to Vista SP2 and others - no difference). My normal desktop is 4K, 225% scale, but as with all Ubisoft sub sims, I switch to 1920x1080 100% scale before running SH5. (You probably know that SH4 won't even load if the scale isn't 100%). If only the problem were this simple.
I'm running the 22H2 update for Win11. It's known to cause problems with games and some drivers.Unfortunately, rolling back to a previous update does not seem to be possible. Microsoft just says "check for updated games and drivers". HAH! Microsoft breaks stuff in an update and expects developers to fix their mistakes!
The fact that something is changing the game files while running suggests an antivirus/antimalware program interference. One of the first things I did was exclude the D:\Games\Ubisoft\SH5 folder from being scanned. Window Defender defaults to Malwarebytes for antiviral protection, and any independent scans by Defender are turned off. So ???

I searched 'SOAN' in the working, read-only SH5 data folder and found a SOAN folder with a picture of a blank recog manual, and 7 additional files:

Sorry to keep posting, but maybe some of this info may help to discover how to fix the Win11 problem.

Well when I started with SH5 my first step was to purchase the Steam version. Once that I had got SH5 up and running, I was able to add in the TWoS update. Hope that this helps you also to get started.

It's got to be something that all of us Win11 users have in common. I'm most suspicious of Windows Defender. Since the v22H2 Win11 update, it even flags Intel drivers as problematic. I've turned off "Reputation-based protection" but need more information on "Exploit protection" settings.
Meanwhile, try this it may help:
1. Make a fresh install of SH5 and TWOS and, as insurance if you need to re-copy any files, backup the newly installed folder somewhere before running the game!
2, Run JSGME and add any mods you plan to use. Then set everything in the TWOS-parts folder (except TWOS-parts/jsgme.ini) to read-only.
3. Set everything in the data folder to read-only, except data/automation and data/cfg folders.
I've been running this way for a week, without losing any user charts or getting UZO corruption. Only problem is that the image in the recognition manual is frozen and doesn't change. I haven't yet discovered what file or files I can safely change without losing the charts again.
Please reply if it works for you!

vdr1981 or someone more knowledgeable than me would have to confirm, but the rec manual is "built" from the Data \Menu (and Menu \Pages) folders and files, and pulls the sil files associated with the Sea folder assets. I cannot fathom why those being set to Read-only would matter though... ?? Problem with setting the Menu folder to writeable of course, is that the GUI and folders below it are set to the same attribute, exposing the SOAN files Spikos mentions... perhaps just try the Sea folder initially, and then try the Pages folder, and perhaps then the RecManual image would change??...

Well, I'm not very insightful when it comes to most things "SH5". I can't even climb down the turm ladder for a dive :oops: ... OK, so the information of the ships change as you change the RecMan page, which that info comes from the cfg file in the Sea folder, but the dds sil file (same folder) is not loading... hmmmm... this is puzzling. Why would the image not refresh, I wonder... My laptop just went to Win11, so maybe I'll try SH5 on it later today and see what it does there... Another question though, had you done a Win11 "Upgrade" via Windows Update, or a new install (such as a new computer), and then installed SH5? If you installed SH5, is it Steam, Ubi, or disk?
Edit 1120... I cannot get Steam to log me in, and UConnect will not run, hence I cannot access SH5 on the win11 install to even begin to try to see what the RecMan does. In fact, NOTHING works correctly on the win11 laptop. What a waste of time "upgrading" to that pile of buffalo dung full of maggots. What a resource eater... I am now attempting to roll my laptop back to Win10, where the MS "rollback" app has told me I will have to (once again) re-install all of my apps. That's what MS tech support told me yesterday when nothing would run in win11... "you should probably re-install your applications"... a colossal waste of my precious time.

Upgraded from Win10 to Win11 1? year ago. The infamously buggy Win11 22H2 update was just installed on Oct 10 this year. I originally had SH5 on disk, but this install was from Ubisoft, as my computer case doesn't even have space for an internal DVD drive.
There is a Steam sale that just started today. I can log in, but I can't access items to buy... Their system may be overwhelmed.
Don't give up on Win11 too soon. I have to say that I've come to prefer Win11 to Win10. Prior to this latest 22H2 update, I'd had no trouble running anything (well, Dangerous Waters is an exception).

All the TDW DLLs are written in .NET 3.5, and when I look up Windows 11 and .NET 3.5 I see lots and lots of people complaining that the two don't work together. Maybe this is the root cause?
Have you guys tried installing .NET 3.5 framework?

Those are both good and sensible places for a person to look, Torpedo & Cristi_Neagu... I was thinking maybe the Python interpreter was changed for Win11. It does look like it should function as intended though... All I can see on the Python dot org site is the statement "Note that Python 3.9.15 cannot be used on Windows 7 or earlier", up through the same message for the current 'stable' 3.11 release. But the NetFramework could be it also. In Windows 10 & 11, you can enable it by using the MS Documentation Install the .NET Framework 3.5 on Windows... (https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/dotnet/framework/install/dotnet-35-windows) site's instructions, if you need help with that. Let us know how it goes after that please... it will be at least a week before my new laptop arrives that I can try it on...

Unlike Linux (and maybe Apple, I don't know), there is no Python built into Windows. But this is a good point, though. Where is the Python interpreter that is used to run all those scripts? I wouldn't think it's built into SH. I imagine TDW has it built in somewhere. Either way, I don't think that's the issue.

Yeah... I installed the latest stable python last night and it made no difference. Also, on checking Windows features, I see that Net Framework 3.5 was already there and enabled. Odd how it's only the images in the recognition manual that are frozen, not the information on the ships :hmmm:.
Loaded more fuel and torps, and stayed out on an additional 4 weeks on my current patrol. The crew missed getting home for Xmas, but we netted an additional 4 ships and a destroyer, so there will be lots of celebrating when we get back on New Year's Day!

My Windows 7 install of Steam just did an "update", and rolled me back to the Stock SH5, which for whatever reason, it re-downloaded. When I went to start the game, it gave me the "first time run" chore dialog, and said it was installing Microsoft NetFramework v2.0, which I thought had already been on the computer... Of course, this is a Win7 install, not 10 or 11, but is v2 needed also?... I thought activating v3.5 also activated v2, but maybe not... ??

I couldn't agree with you more...Microsoft is garbage anymore...I'm keeping my old Area 51 going with Windows 7 for as long as I can and will never willingly give in to use any of their "spyware" OS. BTW...it might have been Maynard or Dobie, but for sure it was Capt "Lucky" Jack Aubrey (Russell Crowe) in "Master and Commander, The Far Side of the World".

I may have a solution! I'll know for certain after more testing but for now, I have everything working again, even the elusive recognition manual images!
If you want to test it, here's what I did:
1. Search for "Security" or go to settings\Windows Security
2. In the panel, find "App & Browser Control"
2.1 "Reputation-based protection": Turn off
2.2 "Exploit protection": Open "Exploit protection settings"
2.2.1 There are two headings, System settings and Program settings. Click on Program settings
2.2.2 Click on plus sign next to "Add program to customize", then browse to your sh5.exe to add it
2.2.3 Click on sh5.exe once it is in the list. There are 23 possible overrides. Turn all of them OFF! Then click 'Apply'.
2.3 Verify that your 'Silent Hunter 5' folder is excluded from antivirus scans.
2.4 If you are not running a separate anti-malware program, make sure that "Exploit Protection" is turned off. I'm using Malwarebytes, so I turn that off in the Malwarebytes control panel, not in Windows Security.
Test out a copy of TWoS with all of the read-only settings turned OFF!
If you turn off Exploit Protection, it may be best to turn it back on before browsing the Internet.

Sorry about the laptop delivery problem. I hope it arrives before Christmas for you. Last piece of hardware I ordered this summer from China took a month and a half to arrive, and that was without any riots going on.
Disconnecting from the net may not be necessary while running TWoS. How odd though... I don't know about the Steam/Ubi version but the UPlay (Ubisoft Connect) version in offline mode still loads smoothly even when I completely disable my ethernet and wireless connection (via a netsh interface command).
We can be grateful that this is not an EA game.
EDIT: Saturday. After 30 min in game, the UZO, charts, and recognition pictures turned white. I was so hopeful... Well, at least I know what isn't screwing it up.

Quick update for Win 11 users. You only need to set read-only properties for the .dds files. Been running for 5+ hours with just the .dds protected, with no problems other than the pictures in the recognition manual.
It's not that Win 11 doesn't "like" the .dds files. Some of these (like the torpedo depth settings page) are used by the Onealex mod for SH3 with no problems. It's likely an incompatibility with whatever executable(s) that loads the .dds files, causing some to be deleted.

If you'd supply some details of what you did, where you installed the game, and if you applied any mods, that would allow someone to help. I have the game running fine on two Win10 installs, and a Win7 install. The only thing I have had trouble with was Win11, in that I could not get it installed on the machine, but that probably has more to do with my machine and the Win11 Home config as anything. Let us know some information about your Win10 install, amount of RAM, cpu, graphics card, etc., as well as where you installed the game. :salute:

I'm glad that you don't have problems with your install. There are a number of us who can't say the same thing.
I'm running 22H2, not 21H2. maybe it makes a difference. Not Steam. Ubisoft download. UAC is not a problem.
I can tell you that I never had a problem running it under Win10. I haven't run it under Win11 until a few weeks ago. Is it the 22H2 update? Try it and see if you still don't have any problems. Or, less invasive, set read-only status on all .dds files in the folder. It would be interesting to find if your recognition manual also freezes on one picture.

I'm glad that you don't have problems with your install. There are a number of us who can't say the same thing.
I'm running 22H2, not 21H2. maybe it makes a difference. Not Steam. Ubisoft download. UAC is not a problem.
I can tell you that I never had a problem running it under Win10. I haven't run it under Win11 until a few weeks ago. Is it the 22H2 update? Try it and see if you still don't have any problems. Or, less invasive, set read-only status on all .dds files in the folder. It would be interesting to find if your recognition manual also freezes on one picture.

Hi everyone!
After several tries, I've lost count...I manage to get the UZO working and the various charts. The only thing I can't see in the recognition book is the profile of the individual ships, i.e. the file "NDD_Type34A_sil.dds" referring to the NDD_Type34 for example, obviously I tried with all the ships, while I can see the images of the ships. In the image is a Liberty Cargo. They are all blank the files *_sil.dds in the recognition book.
I tried to use the "Pascal_recognition handbook_for_NewsUIs_TDC" mod but unfortunately the problem is not solved for silhouttes. UZO OK, charts OK but I don't have the silhouettes in the recognition book!

Sorry to hear that. I think it's working on my install. I didn't get to test it more that about 15 min.
Two things:
1. Did you remember to remove "read-only" status on all the .dds files?
2. Are the .dds files still there in the folder or did they get erased?

1) yes I removed the "read-only -r" attribute from all .dds files.
I think you are referring only to the files contained in the "Sea" folder. Is that it? So is only the "Archive -a" attribute to be activated? that's what I did, but unfortunately the silhouettes are not seen in handbook. I checked that the .dds files don't have particular characteristics, such as the alpha channel activated for transparency, but the files all look fine and are visible with all graphic file reading programs.
2) the .dds files are present in the Sea folder and have not been deleted.
For now I use the recognition manual as is, but I would like to have everything working!

I'm not just referring to the .dds in the Sea folder. I went to the main Silent Hunter 5 folder, selected "Search Silent Hunter 5" and put .dds in the search box. There are .dds in the TWOS parts folder, a bunch in data/menu/skins, data/LngGamedata, data/Textures (both TLowRes and TNormal). I had previously set everything to read only. So I removed it from all .dds.
In the search window, Ctrl+A to highlight all the files, right click, then select properties, then uncheck read only.
Probably shouldn't matter if you are loading Pascal's Handbook last in the JSGME list.
Of course, there may be something else going on for you... just don't know what else it might be.

Ok but what is the attribute you gave to all the .dds files: A = archive? or did you not select any attribute? However all my .dds files in SH5 are set with attribute "a": only archive.

Sorry, it's been a busy few weeks.
So, I search for all .dds, or hell, just click on the entire Silent Hunter 5 folder,
right click, and then select "properties" from the pop up menu. I only see 3 things under "Attributes": two check boxes (Read only; Hidden) and an Advanced button. I just make sure that the "Read only" checkbox is clear. That's all!

Thats strange.....sh5 is in my ubisoft connect library so i never use my code anymore. Last year i had a new pc setup..no trouble to install sh5..only the game updater doesn't work anymore so i needed to download the v1.2 patch manually.(I have the dvd version)

My situation is exactly like yours. My final solution is using a DVD version of SH5 and every problem is gone even without that recognition texture mod. I'm not sure why though. You could also try using DVD version if you are still looking for solution. Hope this helps.

My installation of SH5, updated to TWoS 2.2.25, is done from an original DVD as soon as the simulator came out. Until a few months ago I had no problems with the recognition manual, perhaps it was the upgrade from W10 Pro to W11 Pro 22H2 that created this problem for me. The recognition manual is the original one and not the one you see in the image of my post.
How do you use the original DVD? For installing or launching SH5? I tried to boot SH5 from the DVD but unfortunately without solving the problem.

Now coming back to SH5 after many years away. I've now reinstalled TWOS after realising (again) that the game only goes so far and then stops updating the missions. I just wondered if;
1) are there any good video tutorials to teach how to use TWOS? I tried the torpedo tutorial in game but became stuck at the beginning when I couldn't figure out how to turn on my TDC (the tutorial then couldn't continue)
2) is there a way to use the standard game way of targeting boats using the 3 circle method? (see my screenshot)
I'm determined to get TWOS working for me :)

It's not really much of a hard feature, the UZO and binocular scopes are pretty unrealistic when it comes to optics. Should be a monocular view with a single vertical line without any markings in case of the UZO and range-marked monocular view in case of the binoculars.

Use Unscratched optics mod and you have those. Totally compatible with TWoS.

Did you update the base game to v 1.2 before installing the mod ? If not it could potentially overwrite some of the mod files
Also have you changed the properties/compatibility mode to an earlier version of Windows. I have run into problems myself after upgrading to Windows 11. Windows 11 (DirectX 12) is only backwards compatible to DirectX 11 and 10. Silent Hunter is v 9.0c ( You may need to run the compatibility troubleshooter to do this, the tab is no longer there as far as I'm aware)

In this main.cfg there is the "Time Compression" section and in the last line there is the "Maximum" value which is the one to change. I use the value 2048 but you can also apply 4096. The important thing is to decrease the value 1024 of "AirEnemyDetected" and "EnemyDetected" otherwise you get sunk in no time. For these two parameters you can also use the value "1" bringing the TC to the effective value of the passage of time, without taking away reality from SH5, in my opinion, and to be able to use the action you think is the most appropriate.

Hi everyone!
After many attempts, I managed to solve the problem of silhouettes that had disappeared from my SOAN. In my humble opinion, the problem was caused by the fact that I went from the 2.2.23 upgrade to the 2.2.25 upgrade leaving out the 2.2.24 upgrade. As a last hope I tried to install The Wolves of Steel 2.2_SH5 Exp.Pack_v2.2.25_Full, that is the complete version, ignoring the intermediate upgrades and finally the silhouettes reappeared in the SOAN. So I definitely think that the W11 version of Windows is not the cause of the problem, but in my case that I skipped installing the 2.2.24 upgrade.
I'm sorry if I wasted the time of those who tried to solve my problem but I thank them all.
I hope this opinion of mine can solve the same problem for other captains!

Interesting discovery... I might try that in a few weeks myself, and see if it makes a difference on my system... Of course, it will be AFTER I get the cpu fan in the HP beast changed... Still under warranty, and I cannot get ahold of HP to get it fixed... I keep getting the run-a-round... sigh - when I can get it to where I can once again run the game, I'll do a fresh install and update here. btw, this is not time wasted, but a case of "discovery"... :yeah:

Simple question, but hardly a simple answer. To know whether it is possible would require someone who knows how SH5 camera movement and effects work, and there are very few people who do have that kind of knowledge. So in order to get answer to your question you'd have to wait until one of those modders drops by.

TheDarkWraith (TDW) adapted one from an SH3/SH4 mod from nvdrifter, but if I am remembering correctly, it did induce CTDs in SH5... possibly from the camera going "out-of-bounds", but I am not remembering the full story... I did not find the mod just now looking through the SH5 mods from TDW, but I thought that there was a pinch of a shake in SH5 TWoS already...

Thanks for the answers! Unfortunately no, even in TWOS when the depth charge attack the sub wobbles slightly. The attack experience is weak in comparison with sh3/sh4.

For GSE you just have to delete the "Night_filter.dds" you can find in "GSE v2.0.1 by GrenSo\data\Menu\Gui" and activate GSE again. Than you have stock/TWoS night view on mp.

If you have Steam version of the game, TWoS will work fine if you install the game via Steam and then run TWoS installer. Only problem I faced is that Ubisoft Launcher doesn't work anymore and you have to download Ubisoft Connect to launch the game.
Which Windows version are you running? On Windows 7, Ubisoft Connect is known to have problems requiring further workaround. On Windows 10/11 it will run without any further tweaks.

Hello, I'm new to the game and have a few questions:
-Have the problem that for example in the first mission against Poland only the 2 ships of the task force and 1 freighter drive around.
2 . Mission British East Coast. Usually only find small freighters and hardly get any tonage together.
When I end the game, I get a summary and all missions say failed.
Is there a minimum tonage that you have to sink?
-When will the Bturm be available for the Uboot VIIA or under what criteria will improvements or new Uboots be obtained?

In the Polish campaign work your way into the bay and west toward the moorage at the west end; several targets incl. the pre-dreadnaught will manifest themselves and some others in the Baltic as U make your escape back to your homeport. Use the deck gun HE shells on the small tanker(of the first three 'practice' ships when summoned to the bridge) to save eels as they burn quite easily! No reason to be sorry: this entire forum was created for ignorant :subsim:ers!:O:

I have DL the steam version. Made sure game launched followed the PDF directions. Made sure the Ubisoft updater was disabled and running in offline mode. I played this game years ago when it was still active.
However I do have a fresh install on this PC. As it was never installed on this PC. Anyway I have followed the PDF to a T. I DL the TWO'S full expansion pack. when I open my Download folder I get a CRDOWNLOAD file called unconfirmed 288787 trying to open in Note pad. When I try to open it just says to large to open in wordpad.

I've played SH5 TWOs many years ago. Ive got the Das Boot itch again and downloaded everything, but Im seeing talk about an old version of Real Navigation vs a new version. IS the new version included in the latest TWO's installer please? Or does it need to be manually updated? My goal is to learn the sextant and proper navigation this time around. As far as I understand it, the old version of real navigation doesn't work correctly for sextant usage (something to do with TC). Any help would be greatly appreciated!

The Real Nav addon included in TWoS 2.2.25 works well. If you want more difficult RN, add the Alpheratz mod.

Did you installed TWoS 2.2.25? Never I see this issue...
Vecko, the author, is russian, but the mod is all in english, except voices. :hmmm:
Reinstall SH5 1.2 with TWoS 2.2.25 and see how works.
In the KSD app put English in the settings. I don´t know if this could be the problem...Maybe not.

One more question, what version of IRAI is implemented in latest twos? I have found on forums here that there is a new version of IRAI 0.0.45, but i cant download it, link is down...is that version already in latest IRAI?

About TWoS and TDW patches:
I would to know why a lot of the TDW patches in TWoS are disabled. I think is due stability reasons, but there is a huge lot of patches disabled. Vecko knows his motives.
I´m doing some tests enabling some of the disabled patches and it seems the game works well.

At some point I have managed to misplace the tool so that now whenever I open that tool it is off-screen and I can not move it back, or at least do not know how.

You just have to delete the .TDW files in the root folder. In this one are the position saved. I don't know in which one is map tool position integrated, but this files will be created and updated with every start of the game.

About Vecko not being around, I just hope he is safe and was not drafted/mobilized. TWoS still works well for me even though I have not upgraded to the latest version due to me still being in a campaign.
Whether or not there will be any more updates we will see in the future.

Post your mod list, if you will. Run the TWoS JSGME. If you haven't added any more mods after installing TWoS, then please mention that. Had you played the game prior to activating TWoS? Did you empty the Save folder after installing TWoS? (C:\Users \UserName \Documents \SH5)

Quick question. Not on the latest TwoS yet.
Have a problem with crew abilities. I have 20 points but do not seem to have enough for Ability watch crew level 1. (See image)
How many points do I need for that? 100? Less?
Please advise or point me to the exact config file I have to change manually.

Hi,
I'm playing the Operation Drumbeat (Pauchenschlag auf Deustch!) campaign in TWoS. I got to the rendezvous point in the first mission close to the US East Coast, was directed to a second rendezvous point even closer to the North Carolina coast, and then parked there for 36 hours waiting for a refueling rendezvous from 1/7/42 0000Z time. I arrived well before the official start date of the attack. I did notice a merchant that I could attack, but I had only 12% fuel remaining. Do I have to attack the merchant to get the refuel to take place via Milch Cow Type XIV or with a Deustchen tanker at the rendezvous point? Is there a specific date/time that I'm supposed to get to the rendezvous point? I did not notice anything specific in the mission briefing or in the radio traffic for Operation Drumbeat except for the location of the rendezvous/refuel. I've read several threads that say that refuel does not work in TWoS. I'm using TWoS 2.2.25, and I've checked to be sure that refuel is enabled in the editor.

No, the Steam version will place the Silent Hunter 5 folder under the /Steam/Steamapps/Common section of your steam installation. I am running the Steam version of SH5 and have no problems wis installation or upgrade.
Just remember after the initial loading of the Steam version, play out the first Polish section, to get an idea where everything is. Once you are happy with the way it all works, it is time to start loading in the TWos update and you will be able to enjoy all the enhancements that the "new" simulation has to offer.

Yes, that way you can test if the sim is doing all the important things, and your installation is not corrupt. After you are satisfied, reboot the computer and install TWoS, following the install instructions. The Steam installation and TWoS marry together quite well you will find.

Put it after your TWoS addons. And after GrenSo Environment, all the mods you want, for example, Alpheratz.

everything was running fine until i lost sound. restarted the computer but nothing. any ideas?
The strange behavior of the game in the Baltic operation. There are 6 Polish destroyers and not a single merchant ship in my patrol area. Is this normal or not? As far as I know the history, Poland had only 4 destroyers. :hmmm:

...if memory serves, and you circumvent the destroyers by going south and then west toward the small port at the far west end of the bay you will encounter merchants exiting the port. Also on returning to base in Germany, you will encounter merchants along the coast rounding the penisula into the Polish bay. Be sure to 'hug the coastline' in your return to base and avoid destroyers patrolling the Baltic.

Thank you dear friend! :up: But I don't really like the Baltic operation. This mission is the fantasy of its author. I am currently working on an add-on for The Wolves of Steel that will not have a Baltic operation. My modification will tell about the adventures of the submarines of the 7th flotilla. :ping:

I think that this Poland campaign is a quiet introduction wanted by the "devs" in order to master the gameplay for novices...a bit like in Sh3...this Poland campaign is not great..lol

Hi everyone, does someone here knows how to successfully initiate a campaign transfer when you reach the ending date of coastal waters? I'm playing the steam version with ubisoft connect on windows 10
I have constant problems charging the batteries. The batteries run out almost instantly and then it is impossible to charge them by any means. What do you recommend, gentlemen submariners? :hmmm:

Strange, I have no problem with the batteries, they all work perfectly...
I of course adopt the attitude of a submariner...
from dawn immersion 70m speed 3 to 4 knots... from the onset of night... surface standard speed 10 to 11 knots..the good thing about sh5 is that we take advantage of these batteries in order to have the maximum of fuel depending on the distance to be covered
There is also... the submerged bridge method which is pretty cool...
Could be a problem in your assembly due to tinkering intensive...

Are you in rough seas? High waves will make the game think the boat is submerged and will cancel battery charging. I have no idea why the batteries "run out almost instantly" as you said earlier, though.

Your TDW_GenericPatcher settings have you seen your deck wash..
as well as engine management.
after what says yagura could be a cause too..But I doubt it because the storms are not really violent unless you use a specific mod..maybe a "fresh installed" on another machine if you have one ..
Personally I used the DynEnv v2.9 - 8.c Wave Mechanics - Hurricane mod..I didn't have this problem..:ping:
