I'm not 100% sure but I think that enigma should work just fine even with steam. ..
Your right, Enigma is working fine, I wasn't :) I received the message Sept 01/39 and used that date. The message was dated for Aug. 31/39.
Download the update 1.02 from the Ubi page. Don´t use Uplay for update the game.
Also download the last Uplay from Ubi, directly, and install it. Don´t wait to automatics updates from Uplay.

I didn't after finding out the Uplay wasn't working for me and got the 1.2 update for the collector's edition and The Wolves of Steel is working great now.

Departed Kiel and used river to Brunsbüttel, but got CTD when approaching the first city, Rendsburg, near the island.
I have a "safe-ish" loadable save on the river a few KM past the gate into the river, but got a CTD again at the same location. :hmmm:
In both cases, my max TC was 16x.
EDIT:
Used an older save just outside the Kiel Pen, and made it though the river past Brunsbüttel.
I'd guess the other save wasn't safe after all...

Near Kiel Ctds should be practically eliminated with v1.06. Are you sure that you have installed all correctly? No aditional mods? What was your kiel departure date?

However, the stuck destroyers bug happened sometimes, several of them on the same patrol. I saved and reload, but the problem insisted on appearing some minutes later. Is there any other solution or suggestion to avoid this problem? :hmmm:

Quick save/reload always worked for me when dealing with sticky destroyers. ..

Yeah it does work, but sometimes you are simply not sure if a DD is stuck to you or not, and then it really gets annoying

I'm new, so I'm not 100% sure, but I followed the basic instructions for installing 1.06 and the update. The only thing different, is I have the Steam version, so I extracted the SH5.exe from the patch listed in the work around.
I didn't add any other mods. Heck, I'm still trying to learn the basic game and the mods already included in the WoS.
My departure date was 29 Sep.
I made a save just as I exited the Pen, then I navigated a bit past the locks into the river, and made another save when there were no ships in visual range. But then got the CTD when the first city was in visual range. I reloaded the save just past the docks, and again got the CTD. After posting, I loaded the save just outside of the PEN, and it worked OK, made it past the river.
It was interesting making that trip, as it was dusk as I reached the first city and navigated the rest of the river in darkness, but at least the moon was out.

I noticed that option is NOT in the dialog menu when you click on the radio guy.
But if you click on his picture for the "officer bar" at the bottom of screen, and then the left "reports" button, you will see 3 options, the middle one is "Send Weather Report".

It seems that I'll have to answer from my phone. many like to ask but very few subsim members will actually spare few minutes to answer few questions these days.. .
1/ colored messages are ACtuall gameplay related campagn messages sent to you, with most of the time imporyant infos.
2/ you can use OFEV to match you uboat numbers. this is not mandatory at all.. .

Travel Mode is most often used when you are leaving or entering a Port to enable a higher Time Compression.
Caution should be used when enabling Travel Mode near Land or other Ships.

I just installed 1.06 and the updates and started a new campaign and now my screen is covered in empty black boxes where I'm assuming the enigma charts and such should be. Any ideas for a fix?
As i am planning to come back to service for next week, i am currently testing last TWOS as total fresh installation and very new Campaign from the beginning of war. :salute:
And it looks absolutely great yet, i would say i can even see some visual upgrade in Memel port? (pilars,... ) :06: :)

Strange, the 'send patrol report' and 'send contact report' options in TDW's UI aren't there anymore, and interacting directly with the radio operator doesn't send any messages. Any idea what's going on?

You should be able to send both reports using the Radio guy or the Watch Officer dialogue boxes. You should hear the Radio guy saying "Report sent" after a short while. It will also state the above in the Ships Journal.

There is no message confirmation in the message box or vocal response when a weather report is sent or IIRC from other commands from the radio operator's icon.
The responses seem to happen when the order to the radio operator comes from the WO on the bridge.

Also, you can send orders to your radioman via "Fat" Dieter Epp; when interactuate with him, you have a menu with orders for the radioman: send reports, etc.
BTW, in my installation of TWoS, the reports are so bad as those of the weather service in my country. Now I´m navigating in the Mediterranean, some clouds, calm waters, and the weather report is "Clouds heavy, 15m waves"...I think this is a persistent bug in SH5 stock.

I have found for me the Radio Reports "Shortcuts" don't work at all. (The ones that you show in the first picture)
The only way I can get reports sent are my directly interacting with the radio man or through the First Officer's dialog when on the conning tower.

TWoS "as is" isn´t for an Steam version of the game. I have the downloaded version original since the launch of the game, year ago, bought in Ubisoft, plus the 1.2 patch.
Really I ignore all about Steam, I don´t have any game with that system.
For your security, I recommend you to buy the download or the DVD version (Amazon, for example). Now it is cheap.

I tried now for 3 days getting this to work, all is good exept:
1. despite all help in forum torps cant be shot AT targets, only hvy misses all around. i managed to hit a freighter from 600 metres point blank straight ahead but the other 3 torps missed by some metres. autotargeting with XO off, modded WoS as per instrouction so i can turn it off but it doesnt matter really, torps never go even close to where i want them to
2. deck gun is destroyed with this mod, it cant shoot automatic, so i have to man it and fire it point blank. Since it is impossible to aim due to waves along the gunsight is removed (seriously?!), i must be within 100 metres and even then i must wait for the right wave nanosecond to shoot.
Only way to sink a merchant with this mod is to ram it
No offence but this mod acually does the game even more unplayable than stock.
So my tip for anybody who wants to install this, be forewarned! You need atleast advanced knowledge of computer modding, atleast 5-10 hrs to get it work, and most recommended an exam in submarine navigation and calculation

Rough sea, big waves turn your deck gun unuseful, you can't move the sight but you can move your sub to see objetive and shoot

Navigation is way harder too especially since you can't plot a route and have the sub follow it automatically. That's maybe then only feature I miss from the stock game.

Why don't you disable optional real nav addon then and play with stock GPS navigation?

If manual input is enables auto-target will not work even with XO TDC turned off.

Some MOD knowledge is expected, at least the understanding to enable/disable MOD's using JSGME.

Using Generic Patcher you can disable Real Navigation so you can Plot a course. Maybe Vecko can help you out here. Maybe a Snapshot without Real Navigation...

Not needed. TDC and torpedoes works as must be with/without the Real navigation mod.
The german torpedoes in early WW2 have many failures, mainly with magnetic pistols. Try only with contact pistols and obtain a good solution. Autotargeting works fine but you need to fix the target with the bar key and have autotargeting enabled. You will have missed fishes, of course. That´s realistic.
Try with the "new ships mission" and you see how works.
Also, see the tutorials videos. You wil see no need to ram merchants to sink them....

I know what you are talking about, i spent a months to learn how to target torpedoes, but i managed to be able to hit unalerted medium merchant +- 5meters from point where i am looking at with manual TDC targetting without any asistance :03:
Its just some real hard work kaleun, but this mod actually made SH5 worth to play for me simply because if this hard learning curve. :salute:

Yes, that is the general consensus here. There is no interest in this mod and almost nobody plays it. It is apparent from the very low number of posts in this thread :O:

Just disable manual TDC option in game settings, jump into historical mission, point the periscope and shoot...In campaign, gameplay options can be changed only in bunker...

I didn't like the prospect of duplicated and instantly sent radio messages that comes with New UIs commands. Check tips section on how to send radio report in v1.06...

With OFEV application you can change keys. Not all but a significant number.

SH3 is great for me (i never tried grey wolves), but i would never ever play without real navigation.
And TWOS really made me looking for realistic torpedo targeting which i never tried before.. I was just using asistents as Lame before :)
I wanted the game would not reveal your position after loading game to make you able to exploit real navigation and such a minor things, but you can override it by your own honesty..
Maybe even environment in u-bote should be more factory-like, and we could have sub full of stocks and groceries at the beginning of voiage while rather empty at the end, but i found if it could be possible to have, it would be already done.
SH5 was so broken after release date, nobody really believed we could have fun with it.
Now i would say modders have done more goodies into it than developers did.

Hey guys, I thought I'd try out TWOS after a long break from Silent Hunter. Looks really nice so far. I've been having an issue with my game freezing up in the navigation map though.
I have the real navigation options running so I can't see my boat location in real time. A good tool for this is to use the navigation fix marker right? That way you can have a marker with a time stamp on it. Well, sometimes when I place one of the navigation fix marks, it freezes my game up. It does freeze 100% of the time for me when I tell the navigator to report the last known position (the option on the far right on his reports), he marks a black dot so I place a fix there and it locks up on me when I overlap his and mine.. Other times it's just luck of the draw when I place fixes in random spots on the map.
Just wanted to see if you guys know of a solution to this or if there is a work around. I would really like to have a mark with time stamp for plotting purposes.

I sometimes experience the same game freeze when relocating a navigation fix. Hovering over a fix, pressing 'c' and clicking on the map at the desired location to place the fix will sometime result in a freeze. It seems related to your description.
My mod list: Main mod, Update 3a, Real Navigation, Wind & Smoke, 1.06 Deck Gun Friendly Waves, EQuaTools Large Compass. I tried without the latter as it is not a TWoS mod but that made no difference.

Ctrl + F8 will show your frame rate in the game.

This wasn't reported until now and I have never had similar issues. Could be something driver/OS/hardware related but it's just a guess...:hmmm: Maybe you two should exchange few private messages in order to track down what do you have in common which can lead to this problem...:yep:

:yeah: I think this is what my problem was. I ran as administrator and couldn't get it to freeze up at all. I'll set it in the launch options now to always run as admin.

Would it be useful to use Large Address Aware (LAA) to patch both the SH5.exe and JSGME.exe.
This should allow any free system ram to be used in the game?

As far as I can remember there was a talk on the forum that SH5 actually doesn't need any memory allocation fixes. I wouldn't recommend it...

I've had this happen when zooming in on the nav map and repositioning a Super Mark exactly over a Mark point at the exact moment the info/dialogue box for that mark pops up. I think the hard lock up is possibly caused by repositioning the mark (Super or Nav) on top of or within the boundary of the info/dialogue box and is a coding issue within this function of TDW's New UI's. When this happens, the only option is to CON/ALT/DELETE out of the game. The way I get around this is not to be too pedantic or exact when placing these marks while zoomed right down on the map. I think the only person that could possibly fix this anomaly would be TDW himself. :D

Interesting... So, can you confirm for sure that the issue has nothing to do with administration rights?
Still , I can't remember that I ever had any issues when placing/repositioning navmarks/supermarks...:hmmm:

Here are the steps I have recreated that locked the game up for me on the first mission.
The dot has gone away when I switched windows while taking these screenshots so I just hit the button 'show last known position' and it comes back no problem. So with just the black dot, I go over and chose the navigation fix marker where my mouse is and the tooltip is showing, then I click right in the center of that black dot and the game locks up.
Just did exactly the same but everything went fine, no game freeze or anything...:hmmm:
In any case, placing nav fix EXACTLY where you want will hardly bring you any good because navigator also creates mistakes...:yep:
Just to make sure that everything is OK, tell me the size of your real nav addon and export your modlist with JSGME (or take a screenshot)...:yep:

I was in patrol may 13, south western approches and finish my patrol ask for a new mission, and start june 6, when i start engines, a message told me that i finished coastal waters succesuful and i'll start happy times, click to continue and now it's june 15 and select the atlantic air gap mission without problems
My question it's simple, is it suppose that you must be in patrol while a new campaing date start?

All is good there, your campaign transfer has been initiated correctly, although you may lose 1 rating point because the game will count your last patrol start as a patrol without any destroyed units...Use CSD comander to track your campaign progress and rating points...:yep:

I am on first mission near Poland, and i can't hit destroyer with torp. It is my ultimate goal in SH5...To learn full celestial navigation and to say goodbye to navigators scripts. :) Right now, I can do a bit of dead reckoning but manual celestial fix is still nautical mile away...:)

I'm really not sure what kind of answer you are expecting to get?
If you set your torpedo solutions correctly, torpedo will, in ~95% of cases, hit the target. It may be a dud but it will hit it...
If your torps ALWAYS go too deep than you may wish to check install instructions once again. Maybe you've overlooked something? Generic Patcher?
And next time, instead of singing songs on the forum, check some documentation and do a bit of forum threads research before posting a question.

Don't know if it's a bug, missing file or maybe just one-time problem with loading texture. Happened in June 1941 during Western Approaches campaign, Bay of Biscay.
Other than that and one or two sticky DDs of course, no problems at all. :yeah:

Options File Editor Viewer app is found where? I just got this installed in hopes of giving SH5 another chance, but I want the SH3 UI which the previous sentence alludes to making happen. There are too many pages to read through practically if the answer is already there, so I'm asking.:salute:

Same problem with two torpedos, but in my case i follow the DD untill it stop very near the coast, was imposible to destroy, there was medium rough sea so i imagine that torpedos run like dolphins

Hi palmic
i cannot "dock" in Memel after very first mission of war (docking interaction is never shown). Once you leave Memel you can never go back there.
Your new home port is Kiel.
This is confirmed by radio message after your objective of sinking 2 ships has been completed.
The Memel base icon remains in place until you are well on your way to Kiel.

I have been in the Narvik Fjord since March 29th moving around.
From late evening on March 31st I started to cover the channel entrance to Narvik from the Fjord to within 15km with my hydrophone so I had the whole entrance covered from all directions.
I have not seen or heard the British Task Force and yet they occupy Narvik as it has turned red.
On April 3rd I decripted an Enigma message, "Attack ships close to the port of Narvik Urgent".
According to the Flag Chart Norway does not become an enemy until the 9th April.
Does the game recognize this Enigma message or am I going to pay a penalty if I now start sinking Norwegian ships before April 9th?

You can attack Norwegian ships as soon as Norwegian ports turn red...Port colors are the best indicator of current nations affiliation...

I don't use manual celestial nav, i just calculate distances by speed table in time and once a time i confirm my logs by navigator celestial fix.
When i tried to return to memel, i picked time by this way, set alarm clock and run TC.
When alarm stopped tc, i went out to the tower and saw... Nothing, it was very foggy. Just seagulls was screaming around.
When fog passed by, i went out again and saw memel buildings lightning at my 90 about few kms away :)
Just stop using script and pick your travel time by table.
There just check celestial fix from navigator.
It's easy and so much better ;)

After attack the DD in Narvik, when it turns red, a german task force will enter
Then go to the end of the red arrow and you will see a capital ship and a lot of DD, report contacts and near uboats will help to disband the DD protection circle, now you'll have a chance to destroy that capital ship
Or you can attack from a side and run like a fool, again the circle will disband it's a hard work evade the 5 DD that protect the capital ship

As you can see i cant set Potsdam as group into next step at Enigma, there is just Hydra, so i cant decrypt the message..

I'd like to learn how to use Celestial Navigation in game also.
I've read the post here (http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=206103), but I get confused with finding my Longitude.

Yes you need to encrypting the code on your enigma machine.
If you want normal messages you need to deinstall encrypted bdu orders :up:

Picture doesn't work... Some messages will be repeated 2-3 times (like base transfers) because they can be easily missed , if player is submerged deep for example...

Hmm based on your problems with custom modding which you previously had, nobody could say which state you could have your game in now.
I would just reinstall whole game, put TWOS in and play ;)

Yeah and we hit nothing yet, cuz Danzig destroyers was too dangerous to attack in the current situation, we just sunk one polish small merchant by deck gun, i ordered to keep low profile, we are still waiting for first torpedo hit!
But i may confirm i checked all the input in the moment of 90 aob and everything was proper set i was able to hit him to the anchor :salute:

Well I made a new install and I found I had the same problem, however, I started a new campaign instead of using the one I was presented with, and that solved the issue. My misunderstanding undoubtedly on how to proceed.

I damaged a battleship in the atlantic, it came back to port alone, i follow it and finally destroyed
But moral crew didn't increase
I thought that aircraft carriers and battleships gave one moral point to the crew

is there a mod that makes ships and destroyers move in water more realistic ? as in if some of you are familiar with SH4 when you shoot a torpedo at them and they are cruising at 15 knots and all of a sudden they are at 30 knots and you miss them. i noticed this happening in the first patrol while firing at the two destroyers and he was the last one left and wouded and still was able to magically speed up and avoid my torpedoes. so is there a mod that works with WoS that makes the physics more to real life?

Just one quick question...
I was wondering can you really hear a ship on a hydrophone that is in a full stop? Than means ship is not moving...speed is zero, no engines running, no propellers moving...

Just come back to the SH world after a few year long break.
Currently playing TWOS, and merely wanted to pop in to say a huge thank you to all those involved in creating this fantastic megamod.
In the midst of a campaign on 93% realism (would have been 100%, but I can't resist the external camera...) and I have to say it's the most engrossing experience I've had in a subsim to date.
Using the Enigma is a fantastic experience & learning about how it worked was fascinating. The 4 bearing method is driving me mad in a pleasant kind of way, and I've finally got used to the RAOBF visual method, after initially playing with the attack disk.
Thanks again to you all, and wishing everyone here a happy 2017 :Kaleun_Salute:

OMG that is awesome.
I live in Germany, and my town has the most intact Air raid siren system in the country. Most towns disassembled the Sirens after the cold war due to cost reasons.
They are now used for disaster warnings and to assemble the volunteer firefighters. So every time when there is a large fire those things sound off all over town. It´s eerie and really makes you feel uncomfortable, especially when they make those really long sounds, not the short ones as in this video

Update 04 changelog so far. As always, the update will be patrol friendly although some changes may be visible after campaign restart or after advancement to the next campaign chapter...:yep:

- U-Flak museum missing coning tower rendering fix.
- Monsoon campaign, added missing allied Subs campaign layer.
- Harbors air raid warning sirens in allied and axis ports.
- Addressed rare CTD issue caused by an unknown AI script when friendly warship detects enemy unit while friendly AI subs are present in the area.
- Added docked/inactive sub units to axis ports which will not cause CTDs.
- Submarines generator nodes moved away from home ports.
- Revised Type II campaign layers.
- Added submarines to recognition manual.
- Revised air raids threat zones for all campaigns.
- New historical mission : 1943 Brest Air Raid.
- Added ships warning sirens/horns and star-shell guns for several more merchant types.
- Removed rusty VIIA external textures since many players didn't like them.
- Few minor tweaks and fixes.

I had to manually copy the German Movie and Sound folders from \Silent Hunter 5\data\LngGameData\Voices\German\Data to \Silent Hunter 5\data

How to use the sextant I have Wolves of Steel 1.06 installed? I do not know what I should click at the mouse or button button so the sun is next to the sea sky hrizont. I have the sextant from the navigator.
Most mind blowing fact about enigma mod is that if British had this, it could won ww2 for them with few books from one ubote.
I didn't understand mod tutorial very clearly, so i was looking for more and in the final i learned how to use it from some real world description of enigma machine.

What do you mean by "switch off monitor"?

Note that if you "got tired" of enigma and you want a brake, just disable enr.BdU Orders addon before you dock...You'll again occasionally receive some encrypted campaign messages but it is not mandatory to decipher them... :yep:

Could you believe i have November 1939 and i never had a chance to fire torpedo yet? I never saw any enemy merchant ship. Just ****ing fishing boats, destroyers, or Norway merchants at east coast.
I saw British merchant just from 5m distance in heavy fog because i was unable to see the flag on longer distance.
But it was in 15m/s wind anyway, waves didn't allow me to fire even by deckgun..
75% of time i have constant 15m/s wind, heavy fog, heavy preciptation.
For tens of hours i am just robot to changing air in sub, decoding messages and listening to hydrophone, gaah! :doh:

Unfortunately, you can not have distinguishable sextant prisma view with TDW real navigation. You can only do the measurements by moving your sextant view up... Search the forum for more detailed real nav tutorials...

Then take original cfg file from the main TWoS archive and try again, or you can manually point the app to the necessary files trough "File" drop down menu...

Sailors should have good morale boost even from merchant shipping as they were celebrating every sunk merchant on their patrols. Military shipping hits was kinda rare.
Btw. Current morale loss through time is much better than before, crew remains professional now.
I would just remove sub random changing course feature. If i travel to let say bearing 180, uboat shift course by few degrees over time.
This is not very realistic as if you would order some course, crew would keep it whatever would happen.

Soo my first torp found its prey, small composite merchant by magnetic pistol to middle front part. Let the hunt begin! :)
It's even more satisfying because it's still medium fog, so i saw him very badly and confirmed flag just before a torpedo loss.
I am just not used to proper aspect ratio mod, which i didn't used before, i just invented my own mental offset at RAOBF.
I was waiting for hit maybe 30% longer, but since i measured its speed very precisely and saw he is really near of 90AOB just by eye, it was pretty sure hit.
At 90 AOB you can set totally wrong distance and it will hit anyway..

Maybe they are just tired of your excessive use of crew special abilities or maybe they just wish to go home to their mammies...:)
20 days in patrol here and crew moral/readiness/restfulness (what ever you like) is still at ~60-70 %...:yep:
Their morale should drop if you are sailing through December :)

19 days at sea to date April 9th 1940.
Started in the bunker with 6 out of the 8 morale dots filled.
Nearly 60,000T of shipping sunk up in Norway.
Would be interested to hear how others use their Morale points and when to interact with the crew.

I'm focused mostly at immersion, so i don't waste my precious time to chat with crew about stupid things :)
I'm rather using bosun skills and cook special meal before some ambush etc.
And i don't like they don't care about beautiful merchant hits. They would celebrate

To learn how to plot using the sextant and real nav, look at this post (http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=206103). It's a bit confusing, but I think I'm getting it.
Hope this helps. I'm still learning how to use this in SH5 as well.
(Once I'm more cofudent in my celestial nav skills, I'll post a video. But that won't be for a bit.)
I went so far as to buy myself a real sextant and book (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/007005928) on celestial navigation. Found a Davis Mark 3 Sextant (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0014476FI) on Amazon for $50 USD.

I'm not sure if this has been mentioned or not, but is there any reason why a Polish freighter spawned right in the middle of Kiel in September of 1939? AI seems to register it as hostile, and the first thing I see when sailing out the U-boat hanger is gunfire from destroyers shooting at this thing. :huh:

Every time i leave base, i talk with my crew two times, because some answers affect to specific crew
Never active the crew maintenance and the special meal at the same time, the extra meal moral point will lost
Active one of those extra moral points before the fight if it"s posible, so you can use special habilities and you'll lost only the extra point
The extra moral points are active only for 24/48 hours and sometimes even less
From time to time fight against 3/4 destroyers at night, periscope depth runing at flank in circles, it's more easy than you thought, just dont rise the periscope too much, of course arcade mode, that's make posible to keep your moral during more time
