View Full Version : New OS.... 8.1 64bit
I've been having some problems with XP and a couple of SATA hard drives. Reinstalled twice on 2 HDDs in a month's time. So in order to try something different I've ordered Windows 8.1 64bit OEM. I got it on an OEM disc for under 100.00 with a 30 day warranty, and free shipping. If I don't like it I can return it to the people I bought it from in Denver, CO. I might need to upgrade my motherboard but that's all, and add more DDR3 RAM.
So with that... does anyone else on here have 8.1 installed and playing SH5? If you can, I'd love some feedback on it. Easy to install SH5 and mods or not, and how well does it play?
Thanks.

Hi GT :salute:
It's just my own opinion based on my own experience.. the best OS is Win7 so far..
MS said about Win8 - 'it was a mistake'.. Win8.1 is just an attempt to correct it a little.. and in my opinion they haven't succeeded..

I have installed SH 5 on a Win 7 machine, then went to win 8 and finally upgraded to Win 8.1. No problems, but I did take the advice of other posters here and did not install the sim in Programs File or programs files (x86). Actually I installed it on it's own partition on my hard drive. In my opinion the biggest hurdle for running the sim is CPU, Graphix card and Ram
Good luck

IC, after running the compatibility test, my i5 cpu and 8800GT gfx card are fine. I just have to add more DDR3 RAM seeing I'm moving to 64bit. The i5 is running overclocked as an i7 at 2.93GH right now, but can go to 3.06 if need be..... water cooling is great. My only hurdle is my P7P55D-E LX motherboard's firmware. I might need a new one but have one saved for me at the Tiger Direct store nearby.... a P8Z77-V. It's great to have connections with the IT guys. They just hide stuff. LOL
I found out that I can return the OEM 8.1 and exchange it for 7. 7 Pro 64bit OEM disc for 100.00....http://www.pricewatch.com/price/software_oper_system/windows_7_professional. Look on www.pricewatch.com for great prices.
Thanks guys.
8.1 came in the mail today. Now to format a hard drive I'm not using and see what happens this weekend.
IC, I got 8.1 installed this afternoon. It's different but I kind of like it. Takes some getting used to but I think I'm gonna keep it. When it installed it automatically installed Windows Defender(MSE for Win 8.1), the NVidia graphics card drivers plus the NVidia control panel , and it looks like it even upgraded the firmware for my motherboard. I'm going to try and install SH5 and another simulation tomorrow. Crossing my fingers all goes well.
Found out today that Windows 9 will be in the works soon. It's to be a makeover of XP with major improvements.

I just got a new rig with Windows 7 64-bit and 3gb (192-bit) GTX 760. I have about 32 mods running on highest settings. Runs like a champ.
I have win 8.1 and cant get SH5 to run at all!If you manage to get yours to i would be interested into how you did it.

watch out for (pause) antivirus software during install
I only have AVG and thats not caused any problems so far.
Andy, go into Ubisoft folder where SH5 is and make a new shortcut for the SH5 exe, after you delete the one on your desktop. That might help... I had the same problem as you and now I can start SH5 again.

Unfortunately yes. However it does have a play offline feature. This seemed to make a difference on my older system.
Then again, I was running Vista 32-bit. But at least I could play.
