After much wailing and gnashing of teeth I've got the game running on Windows 7. So, off I go, sinking ships with gay abandon. I got to the point where I had enough renown to get a type VII so, off I went to deal out more havoc. Only it was me that got the havoc not the ships.

I'm well into the patrol, sunk a few and then... err... why isn't my boat moving? Plenty of fuel and people but no diesel propulsion. Dive to periscope depth and sweet, I've got turns on the screw. Surface again and fill the torpedo room with people so a bit of reloading can go on. They're not reloading. I wonder why not. Still no diesel propulsion. I'm sat here scratching my head when POOF! No SH3! Back to the OS, completely disappeared. :wah: Ho hum. Tried again later (after a power off). I Loaded the save, started the mission and, exactly the same thing happened. As in POOF!, just before I'm going to set course for home.

Anyone got any bright ideas on what's going on?

The diesel may take a few seconds to start. In those days it took a diesel some time to preheat.
Sometimes this SH3 feature doesn't work. Try to reverse and then throttle forward again to overcome this issue.

If you are on vanilla SH3 your crew may be exhausted and refuses to run the diesels or reload the torpedos. They will show a red exclamation mark and want to recover in the crew compartments. If you want to get rid of your nanny duties, there are mods out there to stop that behaviour.
You know the green indicator over a compartment corelates with the compartments performance, do you? More (qualified) people - better performance and vice versa.

If you are still rigged for silence no reloading or repair will be done.

Did you use these crew screen buttons to auto allocate your crew into the compartments for diving or surface actions? Don't do it. It's a never solved bug and your game crashes under certain conditions.

Aha! I didn't know about the auto-allocate bug. I bet that's what caught me.

It's possible that I was rigged for silent running too. I know about the green indicators and the tired crew. I played the game extensively years ago, even had an earlier version of GWX. If I can get it running 100% I'll make a donation and get GWC 3.0.

I just thought of something. If I get good at this I might be able to get a job with Ubisoft at their Chertsey office. It's a shame Mum died, I could have lived with her; 2 minute walk to work. Hey, a bloke can live in hope. LOL
