Is it just me or do the escort destroyers seem to be a little too good at
locating Early this evening I was at about 300ft(well below thermal layer)
and silent running and escorts found me almost like I was surfaced. Is
this historically correct or even possible in the real world regardless of time period.

I'm not sure how it works in the game, but in real life a thermal layer is not a cloaking device. Have you ever done the trick where you put a straw into a glass of water and it looks like the straw is bent, sometimes so much that the straw reflected through the water doesn't even seem to touch the part that's above the water? That's how a thermal layer works. It doesn't mask the sub, it refracts the ping so it seems to be somewhere else. If the game is working right they should know you're there, just have a very hard time finding out exactly where.
If you were running at faster than silent speed they might very well have heard you, and started pinging.
Silent running AND below the layer AND less than 2 kts speed AND presenting a low aspect to the escorts AND whispering a digital prayer or something ...

You could go in the game folders and adjust the Destroyers sensors down a bit. It makes the missions a little more survivable.

What year? Axis or Allies? What boat?
All all makes a difference in the game.
I'm running a U-boat in 1940 off the coast of England and I can can have them going right past me and they do not hear a thing at 70 meters.
