I am playing stock sh3 and was just damaged in an air attack. One of the Diesel engines was destroyed. When I surfaced I don't seem to be able to recharge the batteries. I have tried giving "all stop" so that the one remaining engine can be used for the recharge but to no avail. Any ideas? I have a long way to go to get back home!

Which engine was blown up? The starboard one? Then I suspect you are out of luck . In real life you could still use the remaining engine for both charging and propulsion at the same time, though it would have issues, but Silent Hunter engine management option are much more limited.

One of the many anomalies of the game is that you can surface, turn up the game time acceleration and your batteries will or should charge themselves...personally I'd select 'Esc' and immediately hyper back to base.

make sure recharge is not going on as that will keep the prop from spinning because in game one screw would be turning while the other one was cranking a generator for recharging. Likely your engine is on and running but the Cheif wants to recharge batteries.
At all stop nothing will happen not even charging engines must be going for a recharge or movement.

I was afraid this might be the case.

Desert striker, if you have a way to recharge while moving on the port engine then I am all ears. The problem is not being able to recharge. I have plenty of fuel to put that one engine to good use but it seems as of Feb 1942 the Sunderlands can reach out to the mid Atlantic night or day and crash dives seem inevitable.

If Jimbuna thinks it's cool then I don't feel bad about warping back to port though.

Thanks all of you for the replies, I appreciate it.

As far as I know (when I have only 1 engine left) it is between charging or moving. Day time submerged moving slowly nighttime running back to base on the for 4 hours surface and recharging for 4 hours. Though I use GWX I have not played stock for years.

I used to wonder why this would happen Jim, until one day i surfaced at all stop.

I was not moving, all stop was ordered, and the batteries were charging.

I looked at the RPM gauges in the command room and sure enough, one of the engines was turning out flank RPM and it was charging the battery. I think this comes from the CE ordering a recharge every time you surface with reduced battery power

Thanks for that John, tbh I've never thought of checking out the guages.

You can disable the recharge mode in the engineering panel: both engines will become available for propulsion. I sometimes do it when I have sufficient charge and the extra speed is handy.
Game wise you have only two options
1) Recharge mode: port engine available for propulsion at whatever setting you order, starboard engine automatically running at high RPM for efficient charging but with the clutch between the motor/generator and the propeller disengaged.
2) Standard mode: both engines available for whatever propulsion
setting you order.

In reality there were several more options.
Arrangement was as follows; note that the E-maschine can be set up as motor, generator or neither and that there are two clutches before and after it. You can have some fun figuring the possible setups, most of which were in fact used depending on circumstances.
