View Full Version : IS SH5 Worth Playing now?
Hi evr1
Please forgive me if I've posted in wrong thread. I just wanted to ask a general question about SH5. I have played GWX for SH3 and loved it. Is SH5 now at a point where it is more like a finished game? I mean is it comparable or better than SH3 or 4? What are the best mods and which ones are in the pipeline? thanks in advance for any help

You've posted in the right place, but you've also posted a question that gets asked over and over and over.
SH5 is playable now and has been for several years.
ok ,thanks Steve, Is it now better than GWX? would you say? In terms of missions and detail etc?
thanks

It all depends on what you want. If what you want is to walk around the best-represented Type VII yet made, interact with the crew and look at the best graphics available, sinking the same seven ships over and over, SH5 is great. If you want to run a Type II or Type IX in a free full-war campaign, encounter multitues of assets, including blimps, look at and sink more that 100 different merchant types, then you still have to live with SH3's "dated" graphics.
But within their contexts and limitations they are both great games. As is SH4. :sunny:

Is that true even with mods??
I just saw this game was $10 so I was tempted to buy it, I felt really burned by SH4 that's why I left the series
Edit: Hey Steve, can you let me know which version to buy on your amazon link? The Gold edition is available for direct download. Is there any drm on the copy now? should i activate the game through steam after i get the product key, i want to mod my game heavily with a supermod or individual mods, not sure the best way to go.

If you didn't like SH4 you'll probably like SH5 even less. Personally I like SH4 a lot, my main objection being the lack of modding involved, especially in the U-Boat side. As I said, SH5 is geared less to running the sub than to role-playing the captain. A lot of people like it and stand by it as the best there is. My tastes tend more toward the kind of campaign offered by SH3, but then I go back to SH1 and Aces Of The Deep and Silent Service before them.

It's not exactly "my" link, but I'll try to help.
The Gold edition is available for direct download.
The 'Gold' edition of SH5 is nothing more than the basic game with some extra ships formerly available for purchase. I stay away from it just on principle. If it costs the same as the 'regular' version, go ahead and get it. If it costs one penny more I'd say it's not worth the money.

The DRM was removed a couple of years ago. I never use Steam for anything. As for mods, I can't help. My nine-year-old single-core 32-bit machine tried to run it for a week or so before giving up altogether. :dead:

Well I ended up buying the DVD-ROM, it's been so long since I bought physical media it's funny:haha: I'm so used to Steam now. From what I've read, modding a Steam install doesn't work with some mods so I think the DVD is the best option.
I remember SH4 not having any significant mods for a while after release, the game looked better than SH3 but the TDC drove me nuts, I was a pro at SH3 and I felt like banging my head against the wall, trying to figure out a firing solution for convoy attacks.
I think I watched a youtube video of SH5 or some news story that got me back into 'the mood' of subsimming. I'm a bit bummed that it seems like SH5 will be the last in the series but it looks like the game is being enjoyed by lots of people now that it has had time to mature with the modding community.

I've always associated you with the top brass around here:arrgh!:
I hope, with the success of crowd-funded PC games(Star Citizen) we get our own subsim revival, maybe someone will step up and create an entirely new series based on WWII or a modern day, fictional war. These games have always been the coziest for me, they're slow and give you lots of time to stop and drink a sip of tea and look out on the horizon for a hint of smoke...man, I'm REALLY aching to get back into it but unfortunately my copy will get here sometime between the 21st and 29th according to Amazon...
That should give me time to figure out this 'modding' thing again, I've been out of the loop for so long.

Well I ended up buying the DVD-ROM, it's been so long since I bought physical media it's funny:haha: I'm so used to Steam now.
Back when SH4 U-Boat Missions was released as a separate add-on, I tried to get it from Steam. Steam refused to sell it to me because I don't live in the United States. Apparently they don't deal with the Sovereign Nation of Utah. The fact is that the girl at CS was very helpful. She couldn't figure out what the problem was, but she spent a good deal of her time trying.

For obvious reasons I wouldn't know anything about that. :dead:

You have me there. I am absolutely terrible at math, especially the kind required to set up attacks like that. What I miss most from SH3 is the WE Assistance. In SH4 I just have to live with the auto-targeting.
I think I watched a youtube video of SH5 or some news story that got me back into 'the mood' of subsimming.
I haven't played in a long time now. I love SH3, but my old single-core rig won't run FlakMonkey's New Interiors or IABL's Merchant Fleet Mod, and without those I just can't seem to get excited anymore, especially the MFM. I've put in so many hours adding ship names to SH3C, and most of those go with ships from the MFM.
I'm a bit bummed that it seems like SH5 will be the last in the series but it looks like the game is being enjoyed by lots of people now that it has had time to mature with the modding community.
I don't really care. I still play AOD and SH1, and I'll play SH3 and SH4 forever if I ever get a decent computer.

I just built a new system last year and I've been meaning to put my old one on craigslist for some time. I'd rather sell it to you for a discounted price than a stranger. Just whatever you think is fair/you can afford to part with, plus shipping.
Here is the list of the 'guts':
Asus P5N72-T Premium Motherboard
Pentium Core 2 Extreme Quad-Core (QX6700) already installed
Zalman CNPS9700 LED CPU fan installed
Plextor 760A DVD RW
Creative XtremeMusic X Fi sound card
PC Power and Cooling 1KW power supply
MSI 560GTX twin frozr video card
Windows 7 Pro associated with included Motherboard
6GB of RAM (Corsair mixed with generic modules)

All she really needs is a case or you could just mount her on a cereal box and boot her up with your HDD:rock:
I finished Metro 2033 with this system plus one extra 560GTX in SLI. But the system will more than be enough for SH3 plus GWX3.0 Gold and SH4 too.
I actually played SH3 and SH4 heavy with mods on this system with an older graphics card, so it will run like butter with this newer one.
Let me know if you're interested and just send me a PM, Steve:yeah:

Steam does validation at startup so its hard to modify the executable file for any game because Steam will rewrite it to prevent a crash and also to verify that it is a legit purchase being used on their framework. Basically its Steam's less intrusive DRM that very few people notice. The DVD version can be patched with the TDW patcher that fixes a lot of the bugs the game has stock.
I think I watched a youtube video of SH5 or some news story that got me back into 'the mood' of subsimming. I'm a bit bummed that it seems like SH5 will be the last in the series but it looks like the game is being enjoyed by lots of people now that it has had time to mature with the modding community.
SH Online will be the last version once it fails to bring in the money because people get tired of playing free games that require you to buy items to play the actual game at a decent speed. That's just something Ubisoft has said they're going to do with a lot if not all of their future games so SHO will most likely be the end. Ubisoft claims a 95% piracy rate of all their games is causing all of their lost revenue, I think its more or less associated with some really poor business decisions on their part. Maybe they'll come back around but I doubt it.
I hope, with the success of crowd-funded PC games(Star Citizen) we get our own subsim revival, maybe someone will step up and create an entirely new series based on WWII or a modern day, fictional war. I'd love to see it, but I don't think there's enough of a market interest in sub games for crowd sourcing to work. I'd rather see a game develop the way Kerbal Space Program has, it was sold as an early release and has been in alpha stage for a couple years now. The benefit of building a game this way is the community has input in the final product. Now it has a huge modding community behind it that has totally reshaped the vision of the game. Wargaming.net is doing something similar with the World of Tanks and World of Warplanes games, they're doing really well and they're fun and the premium players don't have a huge advantage over the free guys. World of Warships is going to be the next big thing, and I think that the days of the single player simulator are numbered when you have multiplayer simulators that are this good.

I was looking at Corsair's water cooling series but I decided against it on my new build. Sadly, games today don't require very much horse power...
As for sound, my nocturna fan runs at a whisper, you can't even hear my beast if you're in the same room.

Water cooling is a huge waste of time and space IMHO, unless you are doing it "just to do it", like putting a huge turbo on a honda civic or something. It is much easier and usually cheaper to just buy a higher Ghz CPU or just mildly overclock instead of going crazy with cooling gizmos.

I will never put water inside my computer, water leaks, pump failure, regular change the water due to mold formation. possibility of metal corrosion (electro chemical reaction), expensive components.
Water cooling, no thank you
The Corsair H series is all sealed. I've had mine for 3 years and no leaks. Not even a hint of the coolant even trying to leak. Yes there's a radiator with a cooling fan. But that fan is one of the fans at the back of the case that came with the case.
I've seen the other kinds of water cooling systems where you have to add the coolant, and no, I wouldn't even think of using them.
The water cooling system has nothing to do with overclocking your CPU. Where you got that idea Simpliciter is beyond me. Overclocked or not, it just cools the CPU more efficieantly than the standard fan on cooling unit with the pipes and fins. I've run them before and nowhere near as efficient for cooling... no matter what the makers say. They clog up with dust and dirt faster than the water cooling radiator ever thought of. I don't have to clean it as often either. But each to their own.

This question frequently seems to come up. There are always those who take a swipe at SH5 for some reason or other saying the game is unplayable.
I would personally say with Open HorizonsII and TDW New UI, with these two mods as your foundation and some other excellent mods now available to us SH5 game play gives us a high level of immersion. It’s just down to the individual how far they want to take it.

I couldn't agree with you more about "online". I really got excited when it first caught my eye. But after seeing a brief beta review of what it's actually gonna be like, I was actually laughing. The guy doing the video kept saying "Hardcore sailors probably won't be a big fan of this", and "hardcore fans of the genre won't like that too much" and, on and on. If you've never played a sub sim in the last, say, 15 years, and are a WW2 naval nut, you might find "Silent Hunter ONLINE" intriguing. But for anyone loyal to the series, it's nothing more than a kick in the b***s to all developers (and perhaps more importantly, MODDERS) who have contributed to the series that so many of us have fallen in love with. It's just not even in the same ballpark as either SH3, SH4, or SH5. With mods? not even in the same galaxy. I was dissapointed because I really liked the idea of SH4 or SH5 wolf pack type multi player co-operative missions, or even campaigns.
Oh well, remember, SH Online is just a "browser" game and isn't bad considering that. Comparing it to full versions of previous games released in the series is not a fair comparison.
Silent Hunter 4 and 5, in my opinion, will be more than enough for the series to hold its breath for many more years, especially with the modders. We'll come back up for air when some developer is smart enough to give this undying community of dedicated fans, something to nibble on. Till then, we'll be waiting under water, way underwater, where we belong..
