Lol Steve

hoi, submarine skipper uit Groningen hier

let's keep this forum in English though

I decided this week to give SH5 a second chance.
Last summer, new computer and i decided to buy the game. Before long I noticed that I have to give promotion points to my engine guy to make a Uboat run at its basic speeds, and give points to a torpedo guy to increase torpedo hitpoints... then I had to sink carriers in the Irish Sea and then I crashed to desktop with my brand spanking new hardware
so i stopped caring

Years and years of SH3 GWX under my belt, I desperately want to love this game. Giving it another go now, as I said.
Not easy so far, I am uncomfortable with the huge modsoup setups I keep seeing, but I like the look of the first mega mods. getting just 2 mods to work without CTD is a challenge though. TDW gui and OH2 alone are causing me CTDs and I am still not sure if it's a memory issue, or stock bug, or mod conflict.

All I want is the gameplay and tension of SH3 GWX3 gold, with all the good things from SH5. (graphics, mainly)

My game persistently autosaves just when i go to periscope depth near enemy contacts. after I CTD I am tempted to load that autosave. Many more CTD seem to follow after that. On the other hand, I had a clear and very short run this morning. out of base. closing on English coast, happened upon a convoy. fired all torps, 3 hits out of 4. nice! reloaded two front tubes in time to shoot one crippled (sunk) and one straggler. rear tube on another crippled (sunk)
reloaded the rest. convoy did a 360 for some reason (to get back in formation?) Fired remaining torpedoes, more hits.

all torps used in one hour of gameplay. something like 6 sunk. tonnage 60k.
no issues, no CTD, no weirdness during the action. crew conversations on return journey (blegh, I could do without some of that random crap)
then my right mouse button decided to not work anymore. sometimes. alt tab to search forum, no results, back to game. no gamebreaker, i was already RTB. docked.

yay, ok one weird issue but no crashes and a good patrol.

but then again, it's october 1939. why does an unescorted convoy fire guns at me for 80% hull integrity? why does that turn to 50% when I go to Pdepth? why does the stock game not feature a 'fire at will' or 'hold fire' button for deck gun? why does the better hydrophone not pick up engine sounds on the surface/or why does the crappy hydrophone pick up contacts from the surface while running diesels at ahead standard? why do fighters fly overhead every 15 minutes and why do they never detect me?

I miss GWX so much. aircraft! Dive dive dive! but not every 15 minutes please. once a day is more than exciting enough.
I call myself a realism junkie but I am really not. GWX is not very realistic at all, on many levels, but it is such a perfect mix of realism/gameplay/excitement/stress/despair/pure joy/fun

ah such a longwinded post to say hi to a fellow dutchman.
sorry :arrgh!:

From my own experience it sounds like mod conflicts. Certain mods need to be installed before or after certain mods. Not sure on all the new and reworked mods as I've been out of the loop since last spring. Some of the guys have a list of their mods posted so you can see what goes where. Even Sober's mega mod is installed in a certain way so there are no conflicts.

On using mods you like it's trial and error. Just keep plugging away and you'll get them to work.

Now if you copy someones mod list and have those mods in your MODS folder, you can use it as a mep file and install what is on that list.... automatically with JSGME in the order that they have. Much easier to do that way and usually they'll be 99.999% correct when you run SH5.

TDW's GUIs can be a bugger if you don't know how to enable them. From what I understand, use Sober's mega mod as they are all set to run without changing cfg values when installed.
