I understand that I can donate and use the Amazon link, but I've been finding this community one of the most tight-knit and friendly internet-wide, so I want to do more than just donate. Is there any way I can help this website improve or help keep it running? I have limited computer knowledge, but I will offer any and all help that I can. I've found a bit of a home within this community and I would like to give back. Any ideas? Oh and I'm transferring $$ now to my paypal to donate. I figure if I'm gonna stick around I might as well ante up like everybody else. Thanks all for the help! :salute:

I reckon by donating and posting regularly in a friendly manner is a great help to this community.
I'm not sure there is anything else I can suggest but someone may post one or two additional ideas here...good luck

I'm thinking about throwing down a fat $50. I get a fancy new title and I don't get that pesky "you have exceeded your DL limit blah blah..." Nothing is more frustrating when you've picked out 30 something ala carte mods, and you can't do more than a couple of them a day :har:
Any way I could help be a moderator or something? I really enjoy the community on here. You guys make my boring unemployed life a lot more interesting lol. I usually can't wait to get up in the mornings and check my emails on here or see the goofy new posts or whatever.

A $50 donation will give you the rank of 'SUBSIM OVERLORD' and rightly so as well as the gratitude of our site owner Neal who pays for the bandwidth from donations but mostly out of his own pocket.
Regarding moderator status please be advised:
Radio Room moderators are chosen by the admin based on the content of a user's discussions, how often the user posts, and his degree of diplomacy and friendliness. Please do not e-mail the moderators or admins and nominate yourself. If you have to ask to become a moderator, you will dequalify yourself from consideration.

i wouldn't push that particular line too hard, because according to Section 7 of the FAQ's here: http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/faq.php?faq=how_stuff_works_faq#faq_rule5_faq_item , asking too much will definately have undesirable consequences!

Well I haven't emailed any moderators to self nominate lol. I wasn't sure exactly how it all worked. I just like the community and want to help as much as I can. The people on this site have made my Silent Hunter experiences much more in depth and enjoyable. But aside from the games, I get a sense of community here, something that I don't see too often in our society.

As far as moderator, thanks for putting your name in the hat. The best way to gain consideration is to continue to post and be a helpful member of the forum. We will be having another moderator "draft" soon.

Nice to meet the man behind all this. I'm transferring money as we speak. I should be able to toss in a $5 on Friday, but after the 1st, after all my budget is figured (and with the blessing of my wife, my CINCPAC commander), I will definitely attempt to make you spit your coffee. However, if that happens, I would like to see a pic or two of the cleanup :rotfl2:
All of you make my day. Nothing warms the heart of this unemployed vet more than checking up on my fellow virtual Kaleuns.
One thing I miss about the military is the camaraderie. I feel I get that here 100% It's too bad we couldn't all meet in person, though I know that would be logistically taxing on most of us.

While none of them could ever hold "all of us", Subsim has held several meetings over the years. The only one I was able to attend was the 2008 meeting in Houston. I finally met some old online friends and found some new ones. They don't happen often, but they do happen.

This forum has improved my ability to use software like no other. My family now turns to me for help with their computers lol. It's really quite simple when you figure out the system, but until you do computers do seem daunting. There is a method to it though I've discovered. Most software work is just tedious, not hard. How many fellas here are former military? I myself having served in the Minnesota Army National Guard 2004-2008. I switched around to a couple different units, but deployed in '06 to Iraq with B. Co. (Mechanized Infantry, now disbanded), 1st CAB (Combined Arms Battalion), 194th Armor Regiment, 34th Infantry Division (Red Bulls).
In conventional warfare I would've rode into battle in the back of Bradleys and APC's to support armor operations. You know that scene in Saving Private Ryan where all those German troops were running behind the Panzer in Ramelle? That would've been me had I served then, crazy huh? I was 19 and psycho back then, we almost had to be.
In Iraq we rode around in Humvees and trained cops, something that was a little out of our specialty, but then again that was Iraq. I don't think anybody was doing their MOS especially after the invasion. By the time I got to Iraq, the country had been taken over, but it was during the height of the insurgency and roadside bomb era.
We were losing at least a couple GI's a day Army wide (unusually high given the amount of technology at our disposal), and Minnesota was starting to lose yet more due to the deployment of our 1st Brigade. You see, Minnesota communities are VERY tight-knit, especially the small ones in the prairie out west toward Dakota. Here if you're not from the same town, you'll get nowhere as far as friends and work is concerned. That kind of close-knit Scandinavian mentality made it hit even harder when we would lose a local man on the battlefield.
I never got into the whole MN cliquey insular thing even though I was born and raised (and still live) here. I'm too well-traveled and open minded for that garbage school of thought. Some folks here have never left their farms, seriously. That's pretty sad if you ask me, but that's the midwest for ya.
My company came home with all hands (something that was rare then, just about every unit had lost somebody), three of which being wounded by a roadside bomb, recovering from wounds, and receiving purple hearts.
Well that's my background, anybody care to share their military experiences? Fire away, this thread is sort of just a free for all now :)
I did my military service in the Swedish Navy-I dont know if it count or what.

I was a 62-Everything ( Heavy junk driver) for six years in the US Army Reserves.
Delta Company, 19th Engineer Bn out of Fort Knox. Now defunct. I served during the first Iraq mistake when Poppa Bush said whoa boys, that's enough. Come on home, I need to save some for junior.:-? They sent the tree companies of the battalion over there but, left poor Delta company behind.:wah:
Since then, I've done war games in Canada with some of those Romeo Alphas and let me tell you, They would have been better served by sending just Delta Company over there.:haha:
The best thing about my short but illustrious military career was that I got to blow shhhtuff up. They probably have my name on one of those watch lists nowadays because I was trained in the use of explosives.:arrgh!:
There is a certain mystical aire in chopping down trees with det cord and digging tank ditches for unsuspecting louies to drive a CUCV into.:woot:

Tell me about your service in the Swedish Navy?
I loved the engineers. They were always so willing to help when it came to removing obstacles. Instead of pushing it out of the way with a bulldozer, they would just blast it to smithereens with about 3 times the amount of C4 necessary :yeah:
We grunts never complained, it got the job done and gave us a sweet fireworks display in the meantime. All you demo engineers were pyros and pipe-bomb makers as kids weren't you? :03:
Well I'm glad to meet a guy who served in 1st Gulf. We Iraq war vets are starting to be called "2nd Gulf." In a way it's true. We finished what wasn't completed 22 years ago, though I don't agree with any of it now. I don't think we needed to be in the Gulf or Iraq either time. Did you know that the debris field of the highway of death is still there? The Iraqis leave it there on the side of the road as a memorial.
Where I was stationed in Iraq, bomb craters from the Gulf War air campaign littered the ground, and there were dilapidated MIG aircraft hulls skittered about the runways and hangers. 22 years and they still leave the mess as it was the day it got destroyed.

Getting a dozer off a trailer with flat tires is a PITA. C-4? Not so much.:03:
We would've used a MCLC. Rocket propelled bangalor.:arrgh!: Just in case there were mines near your obstacle.
I volunteered to be the company NBC NCO after a few years. No slots for advancement in my section. Plus, working in the supply room was cushier than the mess hall and I got unrestricted access to anything I needed and the Arms Room too. Guys actually fought over gaining mess hall duty.:-? PIGS!

Captain, of course. Other than that I can't say. I only know the job I did.
Give me a run down of a day in the life of a sailor aboard a DD.
For us it was all port-and-starboard watches - eight hours long and eight off. 0800-1600, 2400-0800 and 1600-2400. On duty wasn't always work. A lot of the time was spent just sitting in the radio shack monitoring incoming traffic, which was usually either general fleet announcements or for someone else. Occasionally the midwatch would entail something different, such as carrying messages to the bridge or shredding and dumping old traffic. I still remember carrying bags of shredded documents to the fantail and dumping them during a heavy running swell - memorable but not fun at all.
Off duty wasn't all sleep either. Late at night they would show movies in the mess deck, writing letters and reading took up a lot of my time. One shift I had off I never went to sleep at all, staying up 24 hours. Hey, when you're twenty you do that sort of thing. On the other hand they didn't need three radiomen on duty from midnight to breakfast, so they rotated time off on that shift, and one afternoon I went to bed at about 1700 and slept through my off-watch, the midwatch and my next off-watch, about 22 hours. That didn't make much difference to my routine either.
The biggest difference about the Navy is the sights. Mostly you see a flat blue horizon and not much else. Then again there are the schools of dolphins, flying fish, waterspouts, immense storms, and the many different port cities you get to see, sometimes only for a day.
If I could do it all over again I would go Navy, but I'm not sure what I would want to specialize in.
When I was in you didn't have a choice. I was a radioman because that's what they told me I was.

Ah yes, I saw the MCLC in action during training at Camp Ripley, MN. It took a simulated defense zone full of mines, razor and concertina wires, booby traps, tank ditches, murder holes and choke points, and turned it into a nice little walking path straight to the "enemy" lines.

Anyways, Most of that part of Europe was ablaze at one time. In the Somme battlefield, the whole landscape was changed by the overlapping shell craters and pock marks from four years of constant shelling. French farmers still get blown up on their tractors even to this day farming in that area from all the UXO's laying around.

Say you bomb the high ground back to the days of the dinosaurs but don't own it with Boots on the Ground.
The enemy can walk in and take it back.
They own the high ground now and you've wasted millions of bucks doing nothing but wasting millions of bucks.
If burning things to the ground worked? Why did the Allies invade and take ground?
gi_dan2987
12-25-13, 02:34 PM
It wasn't about the condition of the ground as much as it was the location of the terrain relevant to the battlefield. "Terrain and location dictates all in battle." That was one of the first things we were taught in infantry school when setting up for a defense or attack.
Madox58
12-25-13, 02:40 PM
It's the "Queen of Battle" thing as related to Chess.
11 Bravo's are the most versatile forces on the battle field.
WWI proved you could not just take a line and stay there.
WWII tactics avoided the whole getting stuck in a trench type warfare.
gi_dan2987

Not only the most versatile, but like Stonewall Jackson believed, bullets only whittle down the enemy, but cold steel takes ground, and wins the day. It takes infantry with cold steel to do the job. A tank, a drone, a plane can only do so much. You still need good ol' infantry to get in there and root em' out!

Say the whole world goes to crap and planes can't fly and all the tech we depend on goes out of the equation?
Who is going to take the ground?
The Grunt.

If burning things to the ground worked? Why did the Allies invade and take ground?
You'll get no argument here. The only time I ever take it up with a ground-pounder is when they call us useless. The it's "Well, the marines we gave fire-support to didn't see it that way." Other than that, I figured the whole purpose of the Navy and Air Force, at least where I was, was to back up the boys who had to do the hard part. Even the famous strategic bombing campaigns of WW2 were more about demoralizing the enemy than actually fighting the enemy.

You're absolutely correct. There were times when frigates down in the gulf would launch patriot missiles all the way into central Iraq for fire-support missions. The Navy gave us support fire, from about 1,000 miles away :D
I always loved the squids. They were the ones who could give us devastating fire from way way off. We would call in the shot, and it would take 5-10 minutes or so to reach the target. Of course, Battalion and eventually MNCI (Multi National Corps, Iraq) would have to sign off, but if we needed it, we got it.

Well I would love to make it to Texas, but I'm afraid I'm kinda stuck here in MN for the time being. I love the overall initiation into Overlordship. You guys are hilarious! :haha: I guess it's like the Army days when hazing was a typical right of passage for a new recruit. Taken with a grain of salt, you can't break me :O:

Barmy Army! You follow cricket? I follow the BDO and PDC myself. Huge steel tip darts fan here! I throw Unicorn 26gram Catalysts at a Unicorn Eclipse Pro Board. I'm American by birth, but my biological mother and step father live in England near Warrington/Great Sankey.
I've been meaning to get over there and visit. It's so spendy to travel though! My step-dad has all kinds of stuff planned to do when I get there.

Darts is a religion in these parts...John Lowe was the world champion in 1988 and I beat him in a two dart finish for 69 (19 and bull) with a dart in hand :smug:

That's really good! I've watched some John Lowe matches against Eric Bristow. Both fine players I must say. Darts is for sure the art of finesse. Relaxing too! I usually throw when I'm out on those trans-atlantic patrols to the Hudson Strait. Might I mention that in GWX the Hudson Strait is just packed with freighters and cargo ships? Gotta watch those Hudson Bay Company trade lines! I never thought the game developers would put ships in that area, as it's totally off the grid. I wonder if the same is true for patrolling Baffin Bay and the Arctic Sea?
Coon Rapids, class o' 90.
I'm actually from Minnetrista and graduated from Mound-Westonka, class of '05. Yeah I know, I'm a youngster, but I was a combat veteran by age 19 so go easy on the kid jokes :03: I have a lot of cousins that live up by Coon Rapids. My cousin's ex-husband graduated there. I'll PM you his name just for the sake of anonymity on the forums. I've only been in Hutch for a year, but I've been all over. More places than I care to remember! :o

I thought the runestone was up by Alex? That's always something that's intrigued me. If it were possible to prove the Vikings were here way back in the year 1000 or whenever it was, that alone would change pre-Columbian history in the Americas forever.
I'm fascinated by the prehistoric history of Minnesota. The reason we're so swampy up north is because that's basically the remnants of old Glacial Lake Agassiz.
The Minnesota and Mississippi rivers were both the main drain points, and at one time the rivers were miles wide and miles deep! Just look at the size of the Minnesota river valley. The mighty Minnesota isn't as mighty as she used to be.
Minnesota woman was a prehistoric paleo-indian who possibly drown near the shores of the old lake, and she was found back in the 1930's when the highway going to Pelican Rapids was built. I can't think of the name of that highway though, as I rarely venture way up north anymore (northern MN folk tend to be VERY cliquey).

1300's if the history channel is any thing: saw the stone and the hooked X also in Columbus's signature; is a Cistercian thing(GOTLAND) that cannot be faked. The history of the Greenland /Anse'L Meadows- Viking accurate lore would have evolved into a trek up the St Lawrence to Superior and down into the Red River Basin. I don't buy the Templar/Masonic thing. But the stone is bad news- INDIANS- and people don't fake/chisel a tragedy in runestone writing. Since the stone is more in the way of a land marker by ever voracious land-hungry Norse types...who founded ST OLAF at Northfield...one stone won't suffice! Gotta be more, just as deep and under tree roots too! Skol BBY!

That is because it was the gathering/staging point for the Halifax convoys and it wasn't the game developers, it was the GWX scripted campaign layer that added them.
In the main the work of Bigboywooly.
