View Full Version : Attacked while training in August 1939!
My orders were to stay in the Bay Area, sink all the target ships and the two ship convoy along with general shakedown drills and then return to base (Konigsberg) whilst avoiding damage but when I tried to return (on the surface - the lagoon is very shallow) all hell breaks out and I am being fired on from all sides so I hit 'ESC' and 'Return to base' only to find that half my crew are already dead! What is all that about?
That is a glitch as the war has not yet started ALL ships are neutral including the target ships. So germany reacts for 24 hours after your act of agression. I think if you do your Academi bit after the war starts you might be ok.:/\\!!
I found it best to just go out and cruise around-sink nothing-and wait for the radio order to return to base and transfer.
Plenty of Brits to sink when the War starts.

Is there any radio order that tells you to return to base?Do you mean the 24hrs patrol in the grid?

Yes, there will be a message. I disagree with the concept, but the GWX designers did give an extra bit of renown for starting in that locale, since you also lose renown for sinking neutral ships.
The best way to do it is to sink the ships, then hang around the area till 24 hours have passed (the time neutrals will shoot at you after your attacking other neutrals), then go back towards base and end the patrol before you get there. That way no one shoots at you, though in theory since the time limit has passed you should be ok to dock.
Given that I will lose 'Renown' for sinking the target ships, is there a balancing factor (for example, increased crew experience, medals etc.) that still makes sinking the ships a worthwhile exercise?

As I said earlier, they give you a bunch of extra renown so you don't actually lose anything. Also I tend to ignore the ships and turn it into a voyage to Kiel for my transfer. That way I keep the extra renown.
Not that I've ever used it for anything...
Yes, sailing for the Port of Kiel seems to be the best 'shakedown' cruise option - presumably on docking at Kiel I can exit the game and use SH3 Commander (now that I have got the hang of it) to organise my crew before re-starting the game and heading out to the North Atlantic . . .
