About 5 years ago, I played SH3 GWX on an older laptop until it died.
Would there be any problems or pitfalls playing SH3 GWX on a laptop with Windows 7 with 64 bit?
I believe I'd have to download SH3, 4 patches (1.1, 1.2, 1.3 & 1.4) and GWX3, as well as SH3 Commander. Is this correct?
Sorry if this has been asked previously.

1) No, no problems whatsoever. I have played SH3 through SH5 first on XP 32-bit, now playing all on Windows 7 64-bit. It is best to install in any non-default folder of your choicing. Win 7 default, IIRC, is C:\Program Files (x86). Less administrative hassles that way.
2) Download and install SH3. Then latest patch. All patches are incremental to the best of my memory. (More than one patch only if the installer says you have to have a certain version first before a patch, IIRC. Sorry this may sound confusing, but it is.... ?what? 7 or 8 years since I installed the game. I may be mixing up the installer and patch issue from a non-Silent Hunter game experience!)
Then install GWX3 and SH3 commander. Presently, I have SH3 commander on XP SP3 compatibility mode for SH3 to run properly. For compatibility mode, right-click the SH3 commander icon, scroll down and click the properties tab. Go to the compatibility tab, Click the box, and use drop-down menu, etc.

If you buy a DVD or the download from Amazon, you should receive the latest patched version, v1.4. If you have v1.4, no further patching should be necessary. My experience is that SH3, GWX3, and SH3 Commander all run fine in native mode under Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit with SP1. (In fact, I haven't found any mod for SH3 that requires use of compatibility mode. YMMV.) Use JSGME to activate any mods you fine attractive. There are a lot of good ones, so season to taste. Do install the patchers by h.sie and Stiebler, though. They fix a number of flaws that can not be corrected by normal modding.
Besides GWX, there are several other megamods worth looking at. I like NYGM. ("NYGM doesn't have the best graphics, but you get a nice, accurate death!"). LSH3 v6 will be released soon, and should be worth a look, too.
SH3 is 8 years old, but here are a lot of miles left in this old horse! Lots of players and lots of modding activity. Good luck and good hunting!

What was I thinking?:har::haha:

Does SH3 and SH4 show the latest patch version in the upper right corner of main screen? Been 6++ months since I played either one.

SH3 shows v1.4b in the bottom right corner. If you've done the smart thing and installed H.Sie's hardcode fixes mod, then it will show v1.6b. This is the best version of all!:rock:

I think I will experiment with his mod once and for all once I return to base. I have read so many great things about the hardcode fixes mod.
If it doesn't work after applying patches after returning to base, I will have to follow the advice at post #1 and start a new career, which I really do not want to do again.

I've been playing GWX3 on my Win 7 x64 for quite some time. Usually Win7 will auto detect an older game and make the necessary adjustments for you. My OS did this for me and I've never had an issue. If there are compatibility issues I would suggest selecting "Run as administrator" and select WinXP compatability mode. Hope this helps, and happy hunting :salute:
