Before I but it though, I've got to know. Are there historical merchant ships in-game, or a mod that places them there?
I'm a bit of a general North Atlantic ocean liner fanatic. It'd be great if in a sub sim covering this period (or the second world war for that matter) if you had a chance of seeing the Olympic or Mauretania as a troop transports or the Oceanic as an armored cruiser.
In fact, I'd buy the game for that alone, and never sink them. Just watch them steam by.. :yeah:

This old WW1 sub game is primitive, at best. I got it as a curiosity.
It is no longer on my machine, but as I recall, there were no mods. The merchant ships in the game are colliers and cargo ships. There was once a sailing ship.
After Silent Hunter series, this game will likely disappoint you. Graphics are basic. No 3D images. Minimal sound. Few options.

I still play GNBNA. It doesn't really matter if the graphics do not look like Silent Hunter 5. I really would be happy with a bitmap Oceanic; however, it doesn't sound is possible, or that the game comes highly recommended.

I have the game on my computer and still play it now and again. There are many ships including the 5 masted sailing ship. The armed merchant cruiser is a 3 funnelled ship and I am not sure what they based the model on. You can only control a submarine and if you want to go sightseeing it could be dangerous as the escorts have phenomenal eyesight :wah:
I never got into the Silent Service so I cannot compare graphics but I thought the graphics on this one are quite good.
If you are after ocean liners maybe you should get ship simulator extreme. That has 2 I think. :)

I bought this game a couple of years ago as a change of pace from Silent Hunter. It is certainly not perfect. Quite frankly, I would consider it a rushed beta, as there are minimal sound effects and the hyper-vigilance that gets your scope busted so easily comes from apparent simplistic detection coding. There is a mod, Uboote Kurs West, which makes some nice changes, but the game really needs a megamod to finish what the developers started. After reading the credits and looking at what the developer has also produced, the game was obviously a personal project of a handful of people.
The biggest flaw that kills this game is the inability to save during missions. All missions must be done in one sitting. Without a save function, any long-term play is defeated. It is not a bad game, but it is certainly flawed.
