Didn't he forget how to act at one time or am I thinking of someone else.
He forgot a great many things for some time during his drinking days.
Another of the greats lost to us, such a shame, but sadly inevitable. He'll be with his friends now, no doubt having the party of an after-lifetime, no doubt trying to drink Richard Burton under the table. :haha:

Sad to hear. I recently re-watched Masada and he has some scenes in it that I would rank as the best of his career. RIP.

One of my favorites of all time also, what a huge loss. If you filmed him sitting in a chair reading the phone book out loud I would watch it. RIP sir, you will be missed.

Peter O'Toole: In quotes:

An all-time favorite of mine. In some ways, he is the Keith Richards of acting. His character in the film "My Favorite Year" is a great performance and, I suspect, a bit close to the real O'Toole. When I think of O'Toole, I remember this exchange from "Lawrence of Arabia:
T.E. Lawrence: It's my manner, sir.
General Murray: Your manner?
T.E. Lawrence: Yes. It looks insubordinate, but it isn't really.
General Murray: I can't make out whether you're bloody bad-mannered or just half-witted.
T.E. Lawrence: I have the same problem, sir.
Here are a couple of clips to enjoy:

RIP, sir, and many thanks for privilege of seeing your work...

While everyone inevitably remembers him from Lawrence of Arabia, and for comedy from My Favorite Year, and rightly so, my favorite of all might be The Lion In Winter - where he gets to ham it up opposite the likes of Kate Hepburn, Anthony Hopkins, Timothy Dalton, and the rest of an absolutely amazing cast doing nothing but justice to what is - for my money - one of the greatest movie scripts of all time. His scenes with Ms. Hepburn in particular run the gamut from hilarious to heartbreaking and you simply cannot do better than the two of them tossing such brilliant dialogue back and forth. :yep:
Agreed on "Lion In Winter". The simple fact is O'Toole had so very many memorable roles, it is near-impossible to select just one or two. He had the ability to make a film very much better just by appearing in the cast. Another great role was in the film "The Stunt Man". The film didn't get all that much exposure, but did earn O'toole an Oscar Nomination...
If you want a good read, try his autobiography "Loitering With Intent" which, I believe and/or recollect, is in two volumes...

I have never seen The Stunt Man altho I've heard nothing but good things about it. It's one of those movies I always mean to see but it doesn't stay in the forefront of my brain and I forget about it until someone mentions it again.
Somewhere I've got the first volume of the autobio, and have read it. Got it for a couple dollars in some library's used book sale. Never have come across a copy of the second volume.
Amazon, Frau, Amazon...

From Lawrence I always loved this:
"Bartender: [after Lawrence enters with a dirty Bedouin] This is a bar for British officers!
T.E. Lawrence: That's all right. We're not particular."
My father also loves "Lion in Winter", but it is not a film that our TV air much!
Do not forget is role as Tiberius in Caligula! :D

Funny, I'm currently typing to take a break from sorting boxes of video stuff. Right on top I found my old VHS copy of The Lion in Winter and thought it was interesting that I should stumble on it today of all days.

That's one of my favorites from him, though his roll is basically subsidiary. Marvelous film. It will surprise and shock, but never in a bad way. :yep:
And as I was typing this I suddenly remembered him in Troy. I won't say he's the only thing I like about that movie, because I liked everything about it except for the script.

He's probably my second favorite thing about that movie.
The first involves Eric Bana and Brad Pitt and has very little to do with their acting chops. Or the script, except in the sense that it occasionally puts them onscreen at the same time. :O:

I can't remember which film it was but, one scene he was urinating in a women's restroom when a lady walks in and informs him that the room is for women only. He nonchalantly states: "So is this, but I occasionally have to run a little water through it."

Be sure to include watching that on your Becket list of things to do!:rotfl2:
IMO, he made the role of his life in 'The Night of the Generals'. His impersonation of the sadistic general is outstanding. Also had a heart touching performance in 'Goodbye Mr. Chips' (the 1969 version).
One of my favorite actors, capable to play any kind of role with brilliance. He will be missed by many.

IIRC even he wasn't sure where he was born - I think in his autobiography he says he had two birth certificates, one stating he was born in Ireland and one saying it was England.

Rgr thart:
He was born Peter Seamus O'Toole in . . . actually, we can't be entirely sure. According to his own autobiography, he's registered as arriving in an English accident hospital in August, 1932. His family, though, always claimed he was born in Ireland two months before that. Given his father's Irishness and reputation for advanced dodginess, either could be true.
