Well membership was not optional. It was Hitler Youth(Deutsches Jungvolk) for boys or Leauge of German Girls (Bund Deutscher Mädel) for girls you either joined or life was going to very bad for the kid and mom and dad.Every German man that grew up from 1933 to 1945 was a member of Hitler Youth so it is absolutely irrelevant given the forced membership.

The 12th SS Panzer Division consisted mainly of the best Hitler Youth members that where hard core bad to the bone their attitude was such that very often if they surrendered(most did not) they where not taken POW and where shot or left to die even by usually chummy British troops. ISaw an old Brit tanker on a TV show describe how they stopped to help a 12th SS kid on the side of the road when they gave him water he tried to shoot them with a pistol so they took his gun and dumped out the water they had tried to give and left him to die.

By the end of the war they where forcing most every boy to fight usually they ran away not having received the brain washing of the pre-war Hitler Youth.Unless the most hard core nut was in charge of them usually the older Germans let them run away.

Yes I realise that. It was fight and die for your country or die along with the rest of the family. I only mentioned that because the current pope is supposed to have been a bouncer.
