Hello fellow submariners,

I'm new to the forums but have been an avid player of Silent Hunter III and V since their release. Anyway, I was curious if someone knows of literature pertaining to the operations of the Kriegsmarine in the Baltic. I've been interested in the topic for a while, especially the heavy warships stationed there until the end of the war (Deutschland, Prinz Eugen, Admiral Scheer, Leipzig, etc.) I also recently read an excellent book, Steel Ships, Iron Crosses, and Refugees: The German Navy in the Baltic, 1939-1945 by Charles Koburger. It went particularly in-depth about the Baltic Sea's importance as a training area and the crucial role played by naval support fire in significantly delaying the Russian advance along the Baltic in 1944-1945. Furthermore, there is tremendous detail about the evacuations carried out by the Kriegsmarine under extremely chaotic circumstances in 1945.

Now I find myself wanting more about this topic and I figure such literature exists given the significance of the Baltic to Germany during the war.

Many thanks for any help!

The sinking of MV Wilhelm Gustloff in the Baltic Jan45 was probably the largest loss of life as the result of a ship sinking:

True enough but incidents such as the Gustloff were exceptional and over 1.2 million people were successfully evacuated.
