View Full Version : Yamato BB... No more
I got my first Yamato BB today. Caught the task force ( 3 BBS, 1 Heavy Cruiser, 2 Light Cruisers, 8 Destroyers) leaving the Philippines in June of 44.
I was carrying a mixture of 18s and 14s. I fired a salvo of 6 torpedoes all using magnetic set to run just under her keel. I got 4 hits which slowed her down a couple knots. I them went deep and luckily evaded the DDs sonar.
I plotted their course prior to my attack and made and end around keeping the TF just on the tip of my radar. I repositioned myself on their course and waited for a little light from the coming sun to make another attack. The DDs again didn't detect me and I moved in the fire a salvo of 6 18s at 2600 yards getting 5 hits. This slowed her down to 4 knots and she started list to port. The DDs didn't seem to know what to do without wakes to chase down so I swung around and fired a salvo of 4 14s from me rear tubes. I got 4 hits but the 3rd one was the final. She went dead in the water, rolled over, and sunk.
The DDs now went ballistic on me and made run after run. I took some damage but went really deep and evaded. Damn those Yamato BBs can take some damage. 12 hits to put her under and 9 of these were spaced the length of the hull with most detonating under the keel.

I got to thinking. Originally there were 3 Yamato BBs... At daylight after my 1st attack I only had 2 now that I think of it. I wonder if the first one I hit slowed out of the convoy during the night? I never got a ship sunk message although she may have floundered and I didn't get credit.
I was so concentrated on the lead one it never hit me that one was missing till last night. What an awesome game!!!!
My other excitement was setting up on a large Task Force with 3 columns.... Which seemed odd to me. i setup my ambush point so they would come to me and got my torpedoes some what ready and what did I finally see....... It was a damn US Carrier Task Force!!!! Embarrassing!!!!

Not nearly as embarrassing as cutting your fish loose. :03:
Despite the fact that a few US subs were attacked and even sunk by friendly forces, I can't think of one instance where a US sub accidently sank or attacked a warship from the US Navy. A few Russian ships and subs did fall to US torpedoes in the Pacific though. That was embarrassing enough.

Just noticed that. Three Yamatos in one task force? That would be an awesome sight. I guess the carrier conversion for Shinano got cancelled. :)

Yeah that kinda threw me for a loop. If he's using RSRD he should never have more then two Yamato's in one TF/
Maybe I miscounted on my first observation and the 3rd was actually a heavy cruiser or there was only 2 to begin with. That would explain why I only saw 2 in the morning.

I believe we have another wild one on our hands, where's my paperwork.:haha:
You can add a Taiyo Escort Carrier for Patrol number 2 !!!!! This was listed as a medium convoy but ended up being 4 DDs and the small carrier. That's was a surprise!!!! Fired way too many fish ( 10 ) with the last 2 being a waste but it was worth it. I've played this game on and off since it came out and took a 2 year break but these mods take this game to where it should be!!!!

I got my first one in 42 or 43 I think it was (odd enough) raiding inner honshu, she was just sitting at anchor, helpless.

The veteran US sub Seawolf is believed to have been sunk by the destroyer escort U.S.S. Rowell in October 1944. No record of a Japanese sub undergoing an attack at that time exists.
In addition, the sub Dorado is thought to have been sunk in the Caribbean by a patrol plane after being mistaken for a U-Boat. She also may have been victim to a U-Boat or a minefield lay by one.
