Google and Microsoft agree steps to block abuse images

Leading search engine companies Google and Microsoft have agreed measures to make it harder to find child abuse images online.
As many as 100,000 search terms will now return no results that find illegal material, and will trigger warnings that child abuse imagery is illegal.

Sounds good.

Whoever looks up this stuff should have their house set on fire, then thrown into a prison.

What took them so long?
I have difficulty imagining anything more sick and twisted than child molesting.

You'd think itd be common sense to do this from the get-go but apparently not.

Good news but should've happened much sooner.

Let's hope Amy Childs never has a 'stolen sex tape' or the filters will be working overtime.

Devils advocate here: OK you've blocked some search results but you haven't stopped the behavior. The behavior is the problem here not what a person can or can't search for. Keep in mind google changed the way people search for images (porn) by mandating a moderate search for all images (porn) which is legal to view. So by going forth with this you take away the easy way of catching the criminals and force them to devise more discreet methods.

In Germany we had this topic before, to add a filter to "stop child porn". At first you think "yay, good idea", but on second thought you have to see it is just one step further towards control and censorship.

A nationally famous comedian delivered the following example:
"Imagine a cop witnesses a rape in progress. Instead or rushing in to stop it, he is simply establishing a visual cover so you don't see it happening."

With blocking this content, you won't help a single of those kids being abused, you just make it harder to find it and those who really want to, still will find it.
And no one need to block child porn for me and I am sure not for the very most people in this board... We won't search for it. Those who do, have their sources anyways...

As ETR3(SS) said before, it is not stopping the problem, it's just hiding it.

You may well be right but it is a first step in the right direction.

Here's a story about a program developed by the Swedish government that ended with biting them self in the behind.

I can't remember the month or year. The Swedish government wanted to help people in other countries, like Iran, North Korea a.s.o to surf on the INTERNET, without getting caught- So they developed TOR.

What the Swedish government wasn't aware of, was that this software program could fall into the hand of the wrong people

It did- yesterday I heard on the news that the police had hard time to track the criminals using this program.

It was however stated in this news issue, that not every one using TOR-was criminal.

It was told that peopled shared child porn using this program :nope:

Here's some information about this program

Sorry every info is in Swedish, can't find anything about it in English

It's some type of program hiding a IP-address a.s.o

Yeah TOR it used to be called I am pretty sure that most Tor is funded by the US government all Sweden is the second largest funder.

Honestly I am not sure how much I trust a program designed to supposedly allow anonymity that was started by a DARPA project is all that trust worthy.

Sounds to me like they designed it to help spread a counter governmental message in states that are strict and also are "enemies" of the US of course all states even "free" ones truly desire control.

The problem with child porn/sexual abuse is that due to its illegality and how unacceptable such behavior is to society in general it will always be an underground problem the people who par take in it are always going to hide or try to take advantage of a power status(for example Jerry Sandusky at Penn State or a priest).
