View Full Version : Cant get SH 3 working from CD and moding
Hi I am new here and I bought Silent Hunter 3 on CD years ago and haven’t been able to get it working since I am using Windows 7. I have been reading about Starforce and other installation topics but still haven’t been able to make much progress.
I downloaded a version of SH 3 from a torrent ([PC] Silent Hunter III v.1.4 [RIP] [dopeman]) and was able to enjoy it but without Gray Wolf expansion or any other mode because all other torrent downloads crashed.
Can someone point me in the right direction to get SH 3 working with possibility of moding. Shuld I buy some other SH 3 version?
With kind regards

Sorry, but Win 7 and SH III are not compatible. It isn't mods or your computer fault, but Windows 7 just won't run older software. That is to say, not most older software.
I am running SH4 on my Win 7 machine, and also SH 5.
I got SH 4 yesturday and yes it runs on Windows 7, but after cople of minutes I just wanted to go back to SH 3 eaven unmoded.
That's simply not true... I've run Silent Hunter 3 Purchased on gamersgate on Windows 7, and even Windows 8/8.1. The issue is the DRM used likely, the Tages DRM Gamersgate uses seems to work fine.
R-T-B I just found SH 3 on GamersGate for 89 SEK thats thats 8-9 euros or 12 USD. http://se.gamersgate.com/DD-SH3/silent-hunter-iii is it this SH 3 version that works for you, if its so I am ordering it right away :).
It says OS: Windows 2000 / XP(only) though.
Yep, that's the one. Let me know if it gives you any issues but provided you don't mind running at 1024x768 (I haven't tried high res mods) it seems to work fine. Copy protection is a pain if you have to reinstall more than once, but it works for the first (and in my experience, second) install flawlessly.
And yeah, they also say it will only run on a Radeon 9250 / Geforce 4 or something freaky. They are just using an old specs sheet.

Wow!
:o
Where the heck did that come from?
:nope:
I run SH3 with no problems on Win 7 all versions once you know not to install to the default folder.
Guess there's not enuff threads about this?
:har:
I tried to instal SH 3 to non default file but the InstallShield Wizard is forcing me to shoose the destination folder C:\Program Files (x86)\Ubisoft\SilentHunter|||\ .
Edit: Finaly I managed to create another default file by persistant creating files with other names. Interesting to see what will come out of this...maybe I dont have to buy another SH 3 from GamersGate after all.
I have run SH3 from the original disk on Win 7 64 bit on four different machines with no problems as long as I did not install it to the default location. I simply made a folder for it on my C drive and pointed the installer there, did not run the sim, patched it to 1.4b, installed the noCD thing, then ran it, modded it, and all was well.
HW3 what is the "noCD thing"?

Simply not true! I play SH3 with GWX3, heavily modded, under Windows 7 Home Premium with SP1, with no problems at all. Lots of people on this website are running SH3 under Windows 7. Do a little searching. Check the posts. You will see that this is true.
It works!:D
I followed the steps fom Kentubi1983 http://forums.ubi.com/showthread.php/535610-Silent-Hunter-III-on-Windows-7/page2?
Quote from Kentubi1983:
1. Completely remove SH3, and Starforce:
http://www.onlinesecurity-on.com/protect.phtml?c=55
(execute the application in rar archive sfcdrvrem.rar)
Go to the buttom of the page and you find the download to remove Starforce.
2. search for
Silent Hunter 3 v1.4b [ENGLISH] No-DVD/Fixed EXE
on ************* and download it. Its a zip-file (rld-sh14.rar) containing the following files:
SH3.EXE, MISSIONENGINE.DLL, SIMDATA.DLL, UTILS.DLL & STATEMACHINE.DLL
3. Install SH3 and remove the disc from the drive after installation, make sure the game does NOT run after installation.
4. Patch to 1.4b (execute application silent_hunter_3_dvd_1.4b_emea) and make sure the game doesn't start after patching.
5. Extract the contents of the zip-file into SH3's install directory and let it overwrite the files it needs to overwrite.
6. At this point you should be able to play the game." End Quote
And of corse verry important not to install to default folder, only to a new folder in C:\

Ah, good old NoCD cracks, saving us from copy protection on the games we bought since the dawn of copy protection.
Glad you didn't have to buy it again. :D
