Hi all,
my name is Helmut (Nataraj on most boards).
I've joined subsim forum today.
I'm a casual gamer and I prefer games that don't pace me too much (occasionally I play a FPS, usually I'm into sims like Civ) but give me time to think.
I've been wondering for some time whatever became of "GATO", one of the first PC games I ever played (back in the 1980's which only goes to show how old I am  and searching the net I came across this "Silent Hunter" series of games. OMG, just my kind of game!
See, I've been sailing for more than 30 years now. No submarines, that's for sure. Sailboats. Mediterranean. Ah, those Greek islands!
I play Silent Hunter III with the GWX Gold 3.0 expansion.
After "Naval Academy", I'm into my first "career" mission and I am overwhelmed by the realism of this game. Even in a rather small window (can't get anything but 1024x768 it seems), the waves look so REAL ...
although I keep wondering how my crew does it - keeping watch on the "tower" in 30kn winds - high seas, no lifebelts ... and occasionally they are completely submerged BUT they keep looking through their binoculars ;)
Nuff said, glad to be here, see ya guys
