The Navy's newest destroyer will be command by none other than Captain James Kirk (http://news.yahoo.com/captain-kirk-navy-destroyer-135551630.html).

:har::har::har:
The odds are it had to happen one day, but that's just perfect. :yeah:

All he needs to do now is change his middle name.
I so hope he ends up commanding the Enterprise

You know the higher brass will make that happen if the chance exists.

As much as I'd like to laugh, I've only seen the first two episodes of Voyager, so it's not my place :wah:

When Kirk takes the ship out for trials do you think he'll go back in time to get Spock?
:haha:
I kinda feel sorry for the guy.
With a name like that, he'll never make it beyond Captain.

Unless the 'A' stands for 'Augustus'. Then he's even better! :yep:

We can only hope.

I wonder what odds a bookie would give you on that :)

He won't be commanding CVN-65, as she has been decommissioned. If he's still in the navy twelve years from now he might command CVN-80.

I think the real question here is one that can only be answered by his parents: how could you name your kid "James Kirk" and NOT put "Tiberius" in the middle of it?!? :O:

My question would stop right there.

He graduated from the Naval Academy in 1990 so i'm guessing that maybe it was because at the time honoring some family ancestor was more important than a similarity to the name of a then barely known tv character.

Could be they are going back to the tried and tested origins...run out of offensive weapons then revert to ramming.

Some oars and it could meet a "green" mandate, and also serve as a path to citizenship. :D

Almost looks like it could submerge don't it?

I'm sure it can, if you poke enough holes in it. :O:

I sure hope only by design and not due to battle damage :)

Especially, since it appears he was born in 1967/68 which was right in the middle of when the TOS ran.
The Air Force, in designing fighter aircraft canopies, had a machine that would simulate bird strikes. They simulated it by shooting chickens at high speed at the test canopies. At one time, the wing commander of that test squadron was.. wait for it.. Col Sanders. Granted he was many levels above the testing office, but it is an almost interesting coincidence.

Interesting.
General Leslie R. Groves was head of the Manhatten Project.
I want to rule the World! Coincidence?

Capt. James Kirk is commanding why would you doubt he could not pull it off?
Of course he'd need to go back in time, grab Lt. Cmd Spock (Yes the baby book Dude)
Scotty would be needed also. Since he served in WWII at the same time roughly?
Piece of cake!!

I think it gets alot of criticism but i kinda like it. Reminds me of a bigger, badder ironclad. Still cant beat the beauty of an Iowa though.

The Iowa is a thing of real beauty...bested only by an Alaska :)

I must admit I was thinking the same thing when I looked at it...a sort of 21st century Virginia.

Among all the new features and gadgets and radar camouflage, you should have a look at the surface shape, as well as the size of the subsurface hull in comparison.
I would not want to be aboard this during a real storm :hmmm:

That really does seem top heavy(just like the USN) I wonder if they bothered to test it, something like that Spanish submarine that's too heavy might be about to happen. I'd rather they gave me the oldest ship in the fleet over that "thing". Well not the oldest, who wouldn't take USS Constitution she's a beaut!

Not me. Commanding Old Ironsides is pretty much a shore berth, a figurehead job. There is an army of preservationists and historians overseeing every plank and bolt on her so all the skipper does is constant Dog and Pony shows throughout the year broken by just one quick turn around Boston harbor pushed by tugs and with a main deck awash with brass and politicians.

Too bad he's not commanding a real ship instead of a half-assed boondoggle of a destroyer that can't even do BMD... :/

Expect a searing letter from Bill Shatner... :)
