Hi all! i'm somewhat of a newcomer here, and I was wondering if maybe some of you guys could give me a little advice here. I had SH4 a while back, and really enjoyed it, but i had to uninstall it due to lack of HD space. Since then my copy of the game has gotten lost, and i'm looking to get back into the sub sim genre. Could some of you give me some pointers on which sim is the best in terms of realism, and graphics? I really enjoyed SH4 along with TMO, and the manual TDC.

I'm really looking to get the highest level of realism possible. would SH5 be a good choice, or should i stick with 4?

Oh, and I do prefer American subs.

Thanks!
Evro

If you prefer American subs then sh4 is your game.

I'm really enjoying SH5 using TDW Ui, realistic navigation mod, and the raobf wheel for plotting torpedo solutions. I don't think you can get much more real than that.

I have yet to really get into sh4, but lots of people love it.

The thing about SH5 that is not realistic is having to sink 100,000 tons of shipping on one 'patrol' or mission. Only a handful of Captains had that much through their entire career.

Sh3, as far as that goes, is more realistic in that, if you don't see anything on patrol, you return to base or find a milk cow; refuel, reload and go again.

If there were a game that played like SH3 with the graphics of SH5, that would be one good sim.

Just my 2 cents.

Thanks for you guys' input. I had heard some rumors that some features that were implemented in SH4 were taken out in SH5, although it's been so long since i looked into it I couldn't say with certainty what features. SH4, if my memory is good, along with the manual TDC, and a few other mods was a pretty immersive experience.

Try http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=207930 ( http://www.youtube.com/user/TheNorseCast1/videos ) for a good idea what SH5 looks like (modded)

:rotfl2:

I know. I finished my first mission and scored slightly more GRT than Erich Topp lol

Actually , you're quite right about this, I also don't like when game "forcing me" to sink ships in order to unlock next theater. I dont care so much for submarine upgrades or medals, I just wont to change "battle environment" without been forced to make unrealistically high tonnages ...Fortunately , this is easy to fix. We already have mod which will reduce mission tonnage for default campaign, to create one for OHII wont be problem at all...:yep: Maybe I'll just do that in following days...

Note that you also had tonnage requests in SHIII and IV, but they were not visible like in SHV. :03:

Guys - OHII has NO tonnage requirements
you could sail through the whole campaign without every firing at a ship.

There is a progress bar that fills and this gives you a wee cross, but it is all smoke. The campaign can be played through by date only.
So no need to reduce tonnage mod - or no need to say I wish it was like SH3 - it is

The issue here is that where there is a hole to file (blank cross) users will even reload save games to do it - IT DOES NOT NEED TO BE THIS WAY

Tnx Trewally, I understand that...:up:

But, correct me if I'm wrong, if I fail to sink 75.000 tons of shipping in eastern coastal waters mission, then I'll never get order for northwestern and southwestern approaches (talking about opening campaign) and I'll be constrained to continue "empty" campaign without any objectives and without possibility to switch to "Happy Times" ever, without silentoto cheat and this is what's bothers me...

This means if I wont to visit all "battle areas" contained in the first campaign , often I'm forced to perform port raids which i find very cheap and unrealistic and I'll finish coastal waters with over 200.000 tons of shipping, whichn is a bit to high IMO .

No vdr1981 this is no longer the case

One objective will move to the next one by pass tonnages targets (hidden) or by date.
So If you have good patrols and sink ships - you will move to the next objective sooner.
If you don't sink ships - you will have to wait to date end, but you will still move to the next objective.

Here is an example:-

[Campaign.CampObj.MacroObj 5]
ObjectiveID=TG_British_Coastal_Waters
Name=Campaign.CampObj.MacroObj 5.Name
MapZone=Coastal_Shipping
ValuePointsProvided=1
FurtherInfo=Campaign.CampObj.MacroObj 5.FurtherInfo
StartDate=19390904
EndDate=19391201
IsCompleted=false
IsFailed=false
GenAchiev=OBJ British Coastal Waters Succesful
GenAchievOnFail=OBJ British Coastal Waters Succesful
AssocMissionsActive=
AssocMissionsCompleted=
ObjActivationAchievements=

where I want a path followed - it is now set to allow even on a fail - thus all objectives move by date if no ships are sunk

:hmm2: I see now... Tnx!
