They would have to rely on the RAAF for air defense having no combat aircraft in RNZAF.
Of course I suspect that New Zealand is very low on the "places to take over" list of most evil dictators.
You never know though some war lord might become enthralled with the wondrous New Zealand land as seen in the Lord of the Rings films and decide to invade.

I was surprised to see what they actually have:
New Zealand's Army consists of around 4,500 full-time and 2,500 part-time troops.
The Royal New Zealand Navy (RNZN) includes two Anzac class frigates, developed in conjunction with Australia, and based on the German MEKo 200 design. Eight other vessels are in use, consisting of patrol vessels and logistics vessels. In 2010, the RNZN completed the acquisition of seven new vessels: one large Multi-Role Vessel named the HMNZS Canterbury, two Offshore Patrol Vessels, and four Inshore Patrol Vessels. All of these new vessels were acquired under Project Protector, and were built to commercial, not naval, standards.
The Royal New Zealand Air Force consists of 50 aircraft, consisting of P-3 Orion maritime patrol aircraft and Lockheed C-130 Hercules and other transport aircraft. The RNZAF does not have an air combat force following the retirement without replacement of its A-4 Skyhawk and Aermacchi MB-339 squadrons. A plan to acquire 28 F-16 Fighting Falcon aircraft was controversially cancelled by the Labour Government in 2000. The NH90 helicopter has recently been ordered to replace Bell UH-1 Iroquois. The PAC CT/4 Airtrainer is locally produced.

Seems that at one point they where going to purchase a batch of F-16s about a decade ago but it was stopped by a political party.Honestly very odd for a nation to have no effective air defense to speak of.
Seeing as an Aussie squadron would have to come help which would require advance notice as they'd need to ferry F-18s to NZ.The Hornet does have buddy system mid air refueling thing is on a ferry flight you go with the bare minimum armaments and that would be the US military who has full midair refueling.
Makes me wonder if they might have sort of contingency plan.Maybe a munitions dump with ammo for RAAF F-18s along with the support equipment to support a deployment in storage some place.

It's probably down to what you alluded to earlier...a dependence on mutual protection from their closest neighbour (Australia).

See Australia is a kind of its own mini-super power complete with mini-puppet state that relies on it for defense.:03: They also have East Timor come to think of it and influence in some other south east Asian states.
My Australia advice stop where you are it gets kind of expensive.Just some advice from the other one time penal colony.
I heard that Micronesia has the Kiwis back they'll send their best coconuts if the need ever presents itself.
