The more and more I play SH5, the more tired I get playing a submarine and wish I was in a Flower Class Corvette.

Most people wish SH5 was a shipsim, but it looks highly unlikely as it would take massive amounts of time get the sub to work like a ship and have the crew move, the insides of the ship and the weapon stations and such.
I would not expect this in the near future, but remember how much work it would take, and we modders do our work for free.

He said he wants to play a corvette, not a stolen car or a catapult :hmmm:
I don't get the hostility towards people wanting to play with a surface ship. WE KNOW its a sub sim. That's why we bought it and play it and mod it etc. But there isn't a ship sim set in the period on the market (that I know of - or that is any good anyway) and when we see the engine and what its capable off I think its entirely understandable that people would sometimes want to switch it up and put themselves into a tin can.
I for one would love to go Ocean Commerce raiding in Scharnhorst/Gniesenau/Bismarck/Tirpitz/Prinz Eugen etc - just imagine the thrill of breaking through the blockade - steaming into the Atlantic and looking for convoys to sink - in escort with another battleship perhaps and having to survive massed aircraft attack from carrier based torpedo bombers - running back to port to refit....
It'd be awesome. We all know it would take a huge huge amount of work by the talented modders. At the launch of the game people said - expect it in a few years when the bugs are ironed out.
We got the bugs ironed out. Then the modders started on gameplay improvements. The gameplay improvements are huge to this date. New UI's - whole new campaigns - whole new environmental mods - increased immersion - interiors etc.
Once these settle down again - it might be time for someone to look towards making a surface ship playable. I would be forever grateful anyway.

We understand this, but this would take unprecedented amounts of time, as we work for free and in our spare time.
Plus I don't know anyone who has a fully detailed model of a ship, with command decks, engine rooms, crew compartments, weapon stations, galley and all those other parts. Getting it all to work would also take huge amounts of time as the game was not designed to work like this.
We have not yet got a new playable submarine, but this is understandable, there are still many bugs that need to be squashed, I think these should get first priority over everything else, because if a new vehicle came out all of a sudden, all these old bus would plague this new vehicle along with new ones, and this would be very nasty to release such a mess.
(My opinion I think that hopes are set a bit high for a ship.)
Know the feeling! Still play SHII and then switch to Destroyer Command to shake off the tedium of the u-boot and the air's a little fresher too!
Is Destroyer Command even close to playable given some of the worst video game reviews ever on that one ?
"Sometimes software is released in such a wretched state that the developers may as well just come to your house and kick your dog for $40. This is the case with Destroyer Command, a painful instance of just how shameless and insulting a computer game company can be with its customers." -Gamespot
"Destroyer Command Review
We're gonna need a lot of help to float this one off the shoals." -IGN
Etc. Does modding make this game what it should have been as well ?

Yes I get this. I think most people understand the work required would be huge - because of how the game is designed. Its just not as easy to mod as SH4. Thanks Ubi...
What I am saying is that it is technically possible. At some point - once we get another properly playable sub built - and the bugs squashed, if someone is willing to put in the time, it COULD be done.
I am still hopeful of it happening one day.
I just wanted to add - as well as being hopeful that it could happen, I think one day it WILL happen and here's why.
There is no SH6. There never will be. We are stuck with this game for better or worse. Simsubbers such as us will not abandon this game to go play something else - so we have an almost unlimited amount of time to keep working on it and improving it!

I never said that modders should construct a flower sim, etc...
It's just that when I play SH5 more and more, I have a strong desire to play the other side. Flower class in bad weather. Getting a possible contact and deciding to stay or drive on? The distance of the Atlantic? Would be quite the game, though in the current state of the gaming industry, it would never happen.

I'm not sure where you get that the bugs are ironed out, but if you slap together the different mods that are needed to make this a realistic subsim, for which environment mods are essential, not just eyecandy, you end up with a randomly CTD-ing game .. for no clear good reason.
Your request would in essence mean: create a new game based on the sh5 engine.

Well I say that because once the modsoup is in a working order I suffer no CTDS - or very very few anyway. I used to get a very annoying one when changing tubes which drove me mad but I've ironed it out.
Most of the mods that are around now are gameplay enhancing rather than bug squashing - so the next step would logically seem to be making a wider variety of vessels to play in - submarines first - then when it is shown to be possible to make one - someone may make a surface mod.
Its not "create a new game". SH3 and SH4 both had mods to do it. Its just massively more complex and difficult with the SH5 engine than it was previously.

To be historically accurate, a mod simulating life as an escort captain could be pretty tedious. A good number of convoys crossed the Atlantic without so much as a U-Boat contact or were steered away from possible contact by Ultra.

Just a quick addition to what Trevally, V13, and other buddies have fairly said: requests of playable surface vessels keep being posted with at a pace of one every 2-3 weeks. What you mistook for hostility is actually frustration (for having to answer always the same questions, and for not being able to satisfy an otherwise legitimate request), mixed with a bit of sarcasm. :yep:

Heh... We still can't even make another uboat, not to mention any of the other vessels.
So far, I think, priv & TDW are the only people who possibly came even somewhat close to adding another playable unit. And it is still MAAAYBE.
And yeah, it is frustrating.

I get what the guys are saying I have a lot of respect for yourself Gap, Trevally and V13 as very senior members of this forum and talented modders (whose mods I enjoy myself).
Its just that sometimes sarcasm or humour doesn't come across very well when in writing and out of context. I too understand that its frustrating that people repeatedly ask for surface ship mods when its not possible (at this moment!) - and people should use the search function!
The funny thing is - I don't even think the OP was asking for a surface ship mod - he was just commenting that he'd like to play as a Flower corvette every now and again!
Anyway; apologies if anyone took what I said the wrong way.

The crew AI for a destroyers vastly differs from that of a sub .. it would need to be rewritten or added to the game.
The weaponsystems on a destroyer vastly differ from those on a sub .. it would need to be written from scratch.
The ship equipment on a sub vastly differs from that on a destroyer .. it would need to be written from scratch for the most part, or rewritten.
For the destroyer to have meaningfull tasks, the complete AI has to be revamped .. convoys for you to escort should be there, subs to attack them, there is no sub AI in game, unless you count the added sub, that only dives if fired upon .. stays down for a bit and then surfaces again .. again, tons of AI to create from scratch.
Campaign goals, fail conditions, victory conditions all have to be created from scratch .. yuo protect convoys, you dont sink subs .. this has to be coded from scratch.
The only thing that can stay as-is, is the environment.
This, to me, is a new game.

Had I asked for a modder to mod SH5 into a ship sim, I would have posted in the mod forum.
Wasn't keeping track at who posted what when.

Destroyer Command is very playable, but it is limited. The problem with SH2/DC was that it was primarily a scripted mission sim, along the same lines as Dangerous Waters. Once you did the mission, you knew what to expect and when. Both games did have a random mission generator, but it is limited too. Kriegstanz was developed to generate new missions and help broaden SHII and DC, but it was a lot of work, too. Multiplayer with SH2 is where DC really shines. :sunny:
This, to me, is a new game.

I see your point clayton. The first sub sim I played (don't remember the name: it was one of those early games where you had to imagine what was going on from a few colored pixels painted on screen) had the possibility to switch between the command of a submarine and of a destroyer. It was far from perfect, but still very enjoyable :yep:
