GAME OVER PEOPLE!

WE'RE DOOMED!

The great storm is going to wipe us all out or at best sink the UK if you go along with the loony press. Batten down the hatches in your local pub and sink those pints. :har:

Hurricane': UK Will Take Full Force Of Storm

We had a tornado forming right off the coast of Ericeira (north-west of Lisbon) right where I live.
Although it was a "small" tornado, this is usually a very rare event for this corner of the world. And it would certainly have caused some destruction if it had drifted to shore. This was the third in a week in this area.
Weather patterns are definitely changing for worse.

Think that trying to travel on the Great Eastern Mainline tomorrow will be an exercise in frustration, it doesn't take a squirrels fart to bring down the overhead power lines and throw the trains into disarray. Therefore going to get a lift back with Nagy/Keab before it all kicks off. Cuts short the holiday a smidge, but given how well this country handles two inches of snow....

Well, back in the land of Eastern Angles now, sure enough Greater Anglia have shut down trains tomorrow until at least 9am, and then on a pretty random scheme afterwards. So made the right call in bugging out today, I think.

Can't blame the railways for not wanting to risk it, trains and trees do not mix well:

Yeah, well they've got to run track testing trains on all of the lines before passengers can use them, and then after that it's a case of trying to run to some kind of timetable. Of course, the real fun comes for those trains who rely on overhead power lines, because if they're knocked down in multiple places then kiss goodbye to that line for a good part of the day as it has to be repaired.

I think the weather forecasters were again being over eager - I'm not saying that it's not going to be bad in places but just recently (years) they appear to make worst-case forecasts only for reality to be totally different. This has reduced the local economy for my area as the likes of BossMark will look at the weather and no longer jump on the train and come for the day - despite many of those days being gorgeous sunshine (earlier in the year, obviously) with the odd high-cloud or small shower.

Yesterday the forecast I read for here was for pretty similar as the south coast, but later and with slightly less wind. Now we're due heavy rain about 6 am for a short period, and a strong breeze with occasional gusts. :-?

Even with all the technology available today - satellites, weather stations, super-computers - weather forecasting is still quite fallible. There are simply too many variables to consider.
Now imagine you are a supreme commander, responsible for thousands of lives, anxious to get a reasonably accurate weather forecast for the very next day, say, around June 6 1944.

So, is everyone ok there?

Two dead from falling trees, another swept away, a few hundred thousand people without power. Some transport disruptions. All in the south, up here the predicted heavy rainfall lasted for about half an hour (but it was heavy) with normal rain after it. Had to drive to work in my sunglasses as it was really sunny but clouding over again now.

Edit - just looking through the BBC's storm highlights and came across this one. Can anyone else spot the irony?

Both reactors in Dungeness power station's B units have been automatically shut down after power to the site was cut off. The site's own generators are providing power to the site

Where was the great storm of 2013 I ask?

This was nothing I repeat nothing like 1980's one. About 6:55am the wind picked up here and was all over by 7:30am, just wind no rain no thunder no lightning what a bloody joke! I would stand more chance being blown over by standing behind a hippo while it farted.

Definitely wet 'n windy for a few hours overnight here (S.W. London), though no obvious signs of major damage locally. The Guardian reports that a falling tree in Hounslow caused a gas explosion, killing two people. :(

Last week we knew the storm that should hit England will reach us in the beginning of this week.

As the days goes it became more and more sure that it would not only be little storm.

Earlier this morning the meteorologist knew it would be as bad in england.
This afternoon about 1600 CET Denmark's Meteorological Institute measured the strongest winds ever in Denmark it measured 54 m/s or about 195 km/h
This occurred only, thank God, in a local area of Western Jutland

We had our share of this storm/hurricane here on Aero island.

One of our pear trees had been broken in half like it was a matchstick

on our lawn there is, lots of small and medium-sized branches

and not to forget, some parts from my neighbors roof

Well, we've only just got power back on, thirty hours after the event, had a pretty nasty gust which took it out, also tore off some fence panels at a nearby building site, downed a tree and removed some tiles from our roof.
Good thing that we decided to come back from London on Sunday though since the railways shut down for all of Monday and the buses only started again in the afternoon after a double-decker got itself knocked over in the wind.

As for myself, I used the same procedure for dealing with this storm as I did for the 1987 one...I slept through it...

I did hear rumours on the build-up to Jude that the models had another storm in the works for Saturday, no doubt the Diana Express will scream that the UK is about to be submerged by tsunamis and force 2000 gales.

Ah, yes, here we are:
http://www.express.co.uk/news/uk/439848/New-deadly-storm-on-the-way-after-100mph-gales-claim-6-lives?utm_source=ExactTarget&utm_medium=email&utm_term=VPL+4718+for+List+4297&utm_content=%%%3dRedirectTo%28%40LINK%29%3d%%&utm_campaign=Express_Newsletter

Can't see it being as hefty as Jude but it might be enough to bring down some trees and structures already weakened by the storm. We'll see, if Jude was anything to go by none of the models would actually agree with each other even as close as 12 hours before impact, so anything is possible.

Had to laugh though, on the way back from London we'd stopped at the South Mimms services for lunch, so I took a look at the satellite image of what was going on, and the advert that popped up was, well I had to grab a screenshot on the phone.

http://imageshack.us/a/img843/9602/vu5z.jpg

EDIT: Also, in terms of storms and their occurances, a chap at this blog - http://xmetman.wordpress.com/2013/10/31/storm-catalog-of-the-british-isles-1973-2013/ has put together a nice list of storms that have affected the UK from the period of 1973-2013. Here's the list:

http://xmetman.files.wordpress.com/2013/10/british-isles-storm-catalog-1973-2013.png

Certainly, if you were to go back even further you'd find historical storms, usually around the October period, which have caused great damage. My 3rd great-grandfather was a fisherman at Eyemouth in 1881, he became one of the victims of the Eyemouth disaster - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eyemouth_disaster
At least now we have warning, some may say that it's overhyped, but honestly when it comes to the elements the adage 'Better safe than sorry' is never more true.

@ Oberon interesting looking at the storm records you posted I had a look at the weather station I use for my sailing weather and noticed it just topped your chart at mean average of 56.5 kts and max gust of 70 kts on 28/10/13.
Compared to storms other countries get its still a minnow but its a pretty big one for the UK.
