Jürgen Oesten (1913–2010) commanded U-61 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/German_submarine_U-61_%281939%29) on nine patrols, and sank five ships, before commanding U-106 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/German_submarine_U-106_%281940%29) on three patrols, and sinking another ten ships.

In October 1941 he became commander of the 9th U-boat Flotilla (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/9th_U-boat_Flotilla) based in Brest, France (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brest,_France).

In March 1942 Oesten joined the staff of FdU (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/F%C3%BChrer_der_U-Boote) Nordmeer directing the U-boat war in Arctic waters, but returned to U-boat duty in September 1943, sailing U-861 (http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=German_submarine_U-861&action=edit&redlink=1) to Penang (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Penang) to join the Monsun Gruppe (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monsun_Gruppe), and sinking another four ships, bringing his total to 19 ships sunk, totalling 101,744 GRT.

U-861 left Soerabaya (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Surabaya), Dutch East Indies (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dutch_East_Indies), in January 1945 and reached Trondheim (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trondheim), Norway, in April, just before the German surrender (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Victory_in_Europe_Day).[30] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_successful_U-boat_commanders#cite_note-31)

Oesten was the technical advisor for the 2005 submarine simulator (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Submarine_simulator) Silent Hunter III (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Silent_Hunter_III).[31] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_successful_U-boat_commanders#cite_note-32)
