modded up SH5 is very playable. Quite excellent really, so long as you have some patience. But that is already a quality any good u-boat skipper needs to have ;)

Thanks to these awesomely dedicated, talented, and friendly nerds here at Subsim, the game is really great, in spite of being released what was basically an alpha-state.

If you follow the process meticulously, you won't regret about the time spent on it :sunny:

Hi,
I'm also going through the process of gathering all the "Sober's Mega Mod" files. Going to give SH V another go as I got fed up with the constant crashes with other Mod soup configs.
Wish me luck as it seems like a lot of work. :D
Got a better PC now so hopefully it will help.
Cheers

Hi LNER1,

It seems like more work than it is, really. It is only really a lot of work if you decide (like I did) to venture out and try adding in mods to the list you are working from. If you follow Sober's list exactly, and do every single step he recommends, you will be successful your first time out of the barn!

Hi lodebeard,
Managed to get all the files and everything was going great, too well in fact. Followed the instructions and get application won't load error. This is down to the "patched" SH5 exe. :wah:
It appears that the latest TDW GenericPatcher is causing some people, including me, a problem. :hmm2:
Any ideas welcome but I think I'll need to wait for a possible solution/fix from TDW.
Loads with stock files and sobers mod list, just not the "required for ultimate fun" :yeah: new exe.
An older version worked the last time I had a go at SH V on winxp. Using win7 64 now.
Cheers

If I'm correct you get a nice error 0c0000005 and the game wont start. Reason for this is that the patcher removes the signature from the exe .. it's no longer a signed .exe

For some reason, multiple people have issues loading unsigned .exe's windows wont let them. They all report either home or pro win7.

I have Win7 Ultimate 64 .. no issues here.

It could also be:

- messed up system, try reinstall if you have multiple reasons to think it could use a reinstall or if all else fails. Tho dont expect too much from it.
- messed up registry .. you could try a regcleaner, but I would recommend a reinstall in that case .. most often a messed up registry is an effect, not a cause. Cleaning it thus only a temporary fix.
- strict security software that scans for changes in executables and then denies access.
- Windows DEP .. tho unless you turned it on for all files manually, it should not guard sh5.exe

I haven tried installing Win7 Pro myself .. and I dont have a spare machine to test .. so I cant try to reproduce it easily atm .. perhaps I'll try it with vmware .. altho I doubt that would give reliable results as I wont be able to start sh5 anyway under vmware, but perhaps I will get the error before it warns me about the system not being able to run sh5 :p

Hi,
Only had the PC two weeks, fresh install, Running N360. Tried disabling that and running patcher. No effect.
How do you adjust Windows DEP? Don't want to break anything. :)

EDIT: Tried disabling DEP for SHV exe. still same error?????
Place backup files back in folder and game loads. Stumped.

Willing to try something. Did this error happen on earlier releases of the patcher?
Cheers

People have tried, same result afaik. I hear a consistent report on N360 being installed tho. Does it have additional features that might need a different way of suspending/disabling ?

DEP was a longshot .. all those second options are .. something is preventing the .exe from being started, most likely due to not being signed. I'll investigate N360 a bit and report back.

SO, to be clear, did you use Norton to fix the issue? Or was Norton bloatware causing the problem in the first place? I am running Win 7 Pro 64 and have had no issues, but I dont run Norton. Curious to know...

Strictly speaking, there was no issue. Norton 360 blocks access to files it doesnt trust. Patching the .exe made Norton loose trust (changed since install, could be virus) and thus block access. Adding it to the trusted files will give the OS (and you) access again and restore your option to run it.

In essence it was a lack of knowledge on what Norton 360 does on a system, and how to prevent it to do that :p

The Norton 360 issue appeared after upgrading Norton 360 to version 21.1.0.18. I had no problem with any earlier version of Norton 360.

So as the protection is gettting better :rotfl2:

Great job that you guys found the relation between the error and Norton 360. I had no specific reason to suspect Norton 360.

THANKS:yeah:

Game is running fine now

+5000

They say it catches more viruses than free software does, but all that really means is it misdiagnoses more things as threats due to more aggressive heuristics. As in this case.

Well, to be fair, this is what I want a virus scanner to do on the system of my mother for instance ... if a file changes, dont run it anymore and make her call me to investigate before she contamminates each and every file and device she has.

You installed norton to prevent you from running potential dangerous stuff .. then when it does that, it's kinda odd to state that it's too strict. Norton has no way of knowing that this specific .exe is allowed to change unless you add that exception :smug:
