View Full Version : Problem with manual TDC targetting

Hey there

I've been trying to follow RockinRobins Dick O Kane tutorial found on youtube - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2k5yJI6Z5AU

However I'm coming up against a problem...

I'm trying this in the Sub School Torpedo Attack tutorial mission because I've not played SH4 in ages (couple of years) and I've completely forgotten all I learnt - I've been playing SH5 recently though and I'm trying to transfer what I've learnt in SH5 to SH4...

I know the speed of the target is about 7 knots, because I cheated by starting the mission and measured it using the method RockinRobin describes in his video. The target cruiser is too far past you by the time you've measured it though so a restart of the mission is required.

So, on a fresh start of the mission knowing the speed of the target here's what I'm doing -

Already knowing the speed I set the speed in the TDC dial to 7 knots and press the red "send to TDC" button twice.

Then I move the periscope to 340 degrees to give me a 20 degree offset as per RockinRobins video (he uses 15 but says you can use 10-20 and 20 is easier to work out on the AOB dial).

Then because I've got the periscope at a bearing of 340 degrees I set the AOB dial to 7 degrees Starboard (0-340=20 so 90-20=70, which on the AOB dial is 7) and then I press the red "send to TDC" button twice.

Then I drag the triangle on the range dial down to minimum and press the red "send to TDC" button twice, as per RockinRobins video.

Then I setup my torpedos to 15ft depth (the target has a draft of 22ft) and high speed.

However when I go to check the torpedo path (the little green line) in the attack map the green line is pointing to Port (left) instead of pointing Starboard (right) as it should according to RockinRobins video.

In his video he doesn't use the Position Keeper, so I don't either.

So, what am I doing wrong?

EDIT - Just checked using the same speed (12 knots), periscope bearing offset (345) and AOB (75) RockinRobin uses in his tutorial video, 12 knots, and I don't appear to be doing anything wrong because with a speed of 12 knots entered the green line denoting the torpedo path appears to point as per RockinRobin's tutorial, to the right.

After I had seen that, I then reset the speed in the TDC to 7 knots, which is what I measured the target cruiser in the Sub School mission at, and the green line then points a tiny bit left, but when I fired torpedoes (at various points of the ship) as the ship was passing they all hit, although slightly further back on the ship than I had aimed - the 1st I aimed at the mid point between bow and centre superstructure and it hit the superstructure dead in the middle of it - I'm thinking that's because I've got the speed of the target wrong, probably need to remeasure it (probably 9 knots as I've read others have measured it at that)

So I'm wondering if the issue was having with the green line pointing quite a bit to the left was due to the periscope bearing offset (340) and AOB (70) I was using, because I've just tried again with 350 and 80 and that worked OK as well...

EDIT 2 - Doesn't seem to be the offset/AOB values I was using. Just my lack of understanding of the game I'm guessing because I just tried it again, adjusted the speed of the target from 7 to 9 knots, set the periscope to 340, set the AOB to 7 (70) on the dial, did the rest as per RockinRobin's video and hey presto all 4 fish hit the target cruiser, even the 1st one was roughly where I aimed it. Although when I checked the torpedo path the green line was as it was when I initially though there was a problem - pointing quite a bit left.

EDIT 3 - I also think that some of what I thought was a problem was due to the fact that the GFO mod (which to being with I installed) has the AOB dial the other way round compared to stock v1.5 SH4, and that I had not identified the target and sent the mast height to the TDC. I just retried it with the GFO mod (after reverting back to stock v1.5 to test as noted above) and adjusted for the AOB dial being the other way around (it appears to be based on the heading of your sub, instead of the heading of the target, so a target coming from the left now has an AOB to port on the dial, instead of Starboard as it was in stock SH4) and sent the mast height of the target to the TDC and got all 4 fish to hit in the Sub School mission.

Sorry to trouble y'all, I think I have it sorted now.
