View Full Version : SH5 to SH4 - a question about difference in gameplay

Hey there
I've had SH4 for a while (bought it a couple of years ago) but never really played it, I did start a campaign but only got as far as navigating to the Marshall Islands and gave up due to lack of enthusiasm for playing the game - I had other games to play that didn't see me sitting for hours waiting for something to happen...
I bought SH5 for $1 (or £1 forget which) when Ubisoft had it on sale on Uplay last year.
So far I've just about managed to get to grips with SH5 and Manual TDC using the TDW UI mod and tutorials by Trevally, among other mods. Although I probably don't do it completely manually as I do use the Lock target function so I can use the Identify target function added in the TDW UI and I also use the info on the map about target speed when you hover the cursor over a target.
But I'm getting a bit bored with SH5 now, even after installing it again and installing Open Horizons II and I'd like to give SH4 another go, mainly because it's set in the Pacific theatre.
So, I'm wondering, would it be hard to transfer what I've learnt of shooting torpedos via (semi) manual TDC in SH5 to SH4 (I plan on installing the Trigger Maru mod btw)?
TIA for any advice on this.
Trevally.

Sure - that can happen:yep:

Bargain:woot:

:smug: It's good to think you have helped someone:know:

:arrgh!:
I'm not sure, but I doubt sh4 will be more fun if sh5 bores you  It's like chess .. you spend hours to plan a 5 minute final. If you get more action, you did something wrong and got detected.

Thanks.
It's not so much SH5 itself as a game, it's just more the setting, I'm kind of bored with playing Das Boot (even though I've only really ever played SH5 and haven't really played it all that much really) and thus I fancy a change to the PTO.
Anyway I think I just answered my own question...
I re-installed SH4 (and patches up to 1.4, I have UBM but haven't reinstalled it yet) and went to the Sub School Torpedo Attack mission and was pretty much lost.
I couldn't find most of the TDC dials in the Attack Periscope station like there are in the TDW UI for SH5 (I thought the graphics (like the dials) for TDW UI were all from previous SH titles?), I had no idea how to set AOB (commonly 90 degrees as per Trevally's SH5 tutorial), I had no idea how to get the speed of the target quickly (like you can in SH5, I guess I could measure and time it but I don't have a clue if there's conversion charts in the game?), I had no idea how to set the correct torpedo depth (I found the recon manual and the little check box for sending mast height to the TDC though) because there's no little below the waterline graphic showing you how deep the hull of a target is (which you get in SH5 using TDW UI by locking and identifying a target via the gunner icon, or by selecting the target in the recon manual and clicking on the "send mast height to TDC" check box). I also couldn't see any gyro dials so I don't know how to transfer what you do with the gyro dials in HS5+TDW UI to SH4 (start gryo at 0 angle, set TDC, move periscope back until gyro is back at 0 angle).
So I think the answer is probably (having just looked at a manual TDC for noobs video on youtube) but I need to familiarise myself with all the differences in UI between SH5+TDW UI and SH4.
Still going to give SH4 another go, as I said I want a change from the German ATO, but I guess I'll have to relearn stuff I've learnt in SH5.

Hi Raven,
I played a fair bit of SH4. Even unmodded, it was a playable game. The answer to your main question is yes, you will be able to transfer what you have learned about torpedo targeting into SH4. The TDC in SH4 functions in much the same way, but as you have noticed the UI is a bit different.
I wonder if you have some option disabled though. I don't remember having any trouble finding settings like AOB. To find a target's speed using the stadimeter a few times on a target should then allow you to calculate the speed with a button click, just like in SH5. I havent played SH4 in quite a while. Post a screenie of the TDC UI from SH4 and I can talk you through it if you like.
There also might be folks in the SH4 section of the forum who could be more help. But I will be happy to try :)

No lodebeard, no disabled options, just unfamiliarity with the UI (or more to the point faulty memory on my part as I've played SH4 in the past, and did if I recall actually learn how to shoot torpedos, certainly did the tutorial mission).
I've found the AOB and stuff, it's on the two tabs either side of the screen.
Only thing is though in SH5 I target using Trevally's method in his tutorial -
Set periscope so that the gyroangle is at 0 (should always be a bearing of 0 as far as I can tell).
Click on TDC button so it turns green (i.e. it turns on)
Set speed of target
Set AOB to 90
Click on TDC button so it turns red (i.e. it turns off)
Move periscope until gyroangle is back at 0.
But in SH4 there's no gyroangle dial info (in the US sub in the torpedo tutorial, don't know about the German subs from UBM) so I can't do it that way.
Been trying to follow RockinRobbins Dick O Kane tutorial on youtube but I'm having a problem with that, so yeah I'll post in the SH4 sub-forum now...
Thanks.
