The elephant was already dead, and they were removing the tusks so poachers couldn't sell them. :hmmm:

That was also my initial reaction but the caption below adequately explains the situation IMHO.

I was upset that the elephant was killed in the first place.

Unless I missed where this elephant died of natural causes. :D
