So where has the information about this bloke been for the last few years?

Too much time has passed now I fear...thanks mainly to the amateurish Portuguese initial investigation :nope:

Agreed. I doubt it will ever get solved. Certainly not to everyones satisfaction. Very like the Azaria Chamberlain case here in the 70s. It still crops up with questions occasionally

There's more to this story.(?) Cover-ups, corruption, other motives at work here, not just a straight-forward kidnapping case, me thinks. :hmmm:
Other question i have is: i am aware that the parents were dining in a near-by restaurant at the time of the kidnapping. The child was, what, 4, 5 years old? Did she have a babysitter? Someone to mind the child whilst unattended? Negligence on the parents' behalf?
I'm not aware of the exact details of the night of the kidnap, but if there WASN'T a minder or sitter present, then i'm sorry but that is pretty poor.
Even though the restaurant wasn't far, it is asking for trouble.

Latest theory from Sky News

Madeleine McCann Kidnap 'Was Pre-Planned'

Police investigating the disappearance of Madeleine McCann say their review of the case suggests it was a premeditated abduction.
New theories have shifted detectives' focus to a second, later sighting of a man carrying a child at around the same time the three-year-old's parents discovered she was missing.
Detective Chief Inspector Andy Redwood said he hoped to gather more information about men seen near the McCanns' apartment on several occasions in the week she disappeared.
When asked whether he believed the family was being watched, he said: "The physical evidence demonstrates to us that there are people, unexplained people, possibly doing just that.

I've never forgotten about this. I wish her true fate was ascertained one day.
Better still, she would be found alive and well.
But too much time has gone by. I am no LEO, but I'd think all trails have now gone too cold.

There is also the issue of the differing lines of investigation: UK Police believe this to be a kidnapping case, while the Portuguese Police believe it to be accidental death and subsequent cover-up.
This disagreement is very sad, and the whole issue makes this " oldest friendship in Europe" quite uneasy.

I've spent a few Summer holidays in Praia da Luz myself. It's a very nice, cosy and quiet yet fun place for holidays.

This is a three fold sad issue for me.

Jim will probably be more quaint with some details of the case given his career.

For those less familiar with the case, the parents were nearby having dinner with friends, and checked back on the kids every half hour. However Maddie was quite lively, and seemingly it was not unusual for the parents to give her something to calm her down and fall asleep more easily.
This would certainly account for her being carried away without resisting.
And this is where UK and Portuguese Police disagree. The P.P. maintain that Maddie died due to negligence on the part of the parents - medication overdose, or the mother lashed out at her - and subsequent cover-up.

I suspect that the P.P. went for the murderous parents theory because of a previous case -http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Murder_of_Joana_Cipriano - where there were valid reasons to suspect of foul play on the part of the parents. Again (or rather previously), no body was ever found.
Quote: "He said he cut his niece's body in small pieces, put her in a fridge box, then put her inside an old car that was taken to Spain to be crushed and burned."
Now this explains why the P.P. were bent on suspecting the McCanns and searching Spanish junk yards for evidence.

I do hope this doesn't drive a wedge between these two countries.

The McCanns...I dunno, something just sticks with me with them, but I can't deny that they've certainly kept trying throughout the years, whether it's through guilt or hope, who can say.
Personally, I suspect she was kidnapped and most likely sent off to the Middle East to someone with a lot of oil money who likes his brides young. If that is the case, it's not likely that the McCanns will see their daughter again, because there's a lot of money involved in this and that tends to make leads go dead very quickly.
I doubt it'll have done any real damage to UK/Portugese relations anyway, if it has then I've certainly not been made aware of it in the media, which has a pretty short memory anyway. Besides, I get the impression that our police force is about to have its own problems to deal with over 'plebgate'. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-24536328
Relations between politicians and the police have had their ups and downs over the years, but with the stabbing cuts, the pushing of PCSOs to make up the gap in regular officers and the constable bypass plans (which is ridiculous IMHO) have put things down to a new nadir, were it not for the police being one of the services that can't actually go on strike (thanks to legislation passed after the 1918 and 1919 strikes), I think they would have gone on strike by now like the Fire Brigade, and I really would not blame them. They're being asked to do more with less whilst being urinated by on the politicians and being told to smile whilst getting wet.

I've researched online for the "Plebgate" incident. Obviously only the people involved know the truth, but I suspect in the end those Police officers will be thrown under the bus, regardless of what the truth is.
It gets even worse since the whole issue is publicized by the media. This will hurt Police credibility with the people at large, making their job even harder every day.
I can't help thinking those Police officers were just doing their job and following orders which concerned every one's safety, and Mr. Mitchell just couldn't be bothered.
Very sad business.
