I`m at my first play through SH3 (heavy moded) and now i have a choice to pick Right now IXB or wait a bit and take the IXC. Witch should I choose?

Compare the in-game specs:

The 9C has a much greater range on the surface at 12 knots: Since I play with unlimited fuel [so as to cross vast distances at flank speed and 4096X time compression], there is no advantage (for me) to switch from a 9B to a 9C.
Max range 9B = 8,700 nm
Max range 9C = 11,000 nm => big advantage 9C

The two are essentially equal in maximum surface speed and are equal in submerged speed (7.3 knots):
Max speed surfaced = 18.3 knots => insignificant advantage 9C
Max speed surfaced = 18.2 knots

The 9B is 2 seconds faster to dive. As the war progresses, those two seconds could be the difference between life and death.
Dive time 9B = 35 seconds => significant advantage 9B
Dive time 9C = 37 seconds

The 9B is a much cheaper up-grade if moving from a type II or VII:
Renown cost 9B = 5000 => big advantage 9B
Renown cost 9C = 6500

There is a significant difference in the default flak armament. The 9B carries one single 20mm and one single 37 mm C30 flak gun. The 9C has two single 20mm flak guns. Both the 9B and 9C can be immediately up-graded to twin barreled 20mm zwilling versions.

Both the 9B and 9C have the same availability of performance up-grades as the war progresses.

The only up-grade advantage occurs when the 9C40 appears. At that point, it (and the 9D2) can have their heavy flak armament upgraded to either the quadruple 20mm flakvierling 38, the 37mm C30, the single 37mm M42, or the very rarely seen twin 37mm M42 zwilling. You can't get those flak guns on a 9C, (the 9B has a C30 by fault but can't get any of the others).

Personally, I like the fact the control room matches the real life IXC.

The CR periscope was removed in the IXC onwards, so not having one in a IXB has always kinda bugged me. But then, I'm kinda OCD about such things.

Thanks Tupolev and Raptor,
Well, i like the long range and more flak guns but I hate the longer dive times.
Also, how can i set Time compression at 4096?

SH3 Commander (http://jonesoft.software.informer.com/) :up:

The best mod this game has.

Unfortunately that site seems to have everything but the download itself.

You can get Commander here:

Thanks Sailor Steve

Thank you Sailor Steve and Pabbi
SH3 commander downloaded and installed.
Question : Does IXC dive deeper than IXB?

Raptor

There is NO difference in diving depths (in SH3) between the 9B and the 9C; 165 meters for both.

To set max time compression, you must manually edit your/SHIII/data/Cfg/Main.cfg file.

There are TWO of these main.cfg files. One is in your main SH3 root directory; the second is a copy of that file, and can be found in your current career directory in /MyDocuments. Editing the former makes the change(s) for all subsequent careers or single missions; editing the latter makes the change only for that one career or mission. If you don't have a current career or single mission going, only the root directory copy exists. A fresh copy is made every time you start a new career or single mission.

[TIMECOMPRESSION] is the second section of the main.cfg file, right after [SETTINGS].

This is a copy of my edited file from my main SH3 root directory. Where I changed the SH3 default values, those default values are shown in yellow

[TIME COMPRESSION]
TimeStop=0
RealTime=1
LandProximity=512 <= default = 4
CriticalDamage=1
CrewEfficiency=1
AirEnemyDetected=1
SoundEffects=2
CharacterAnim=4
EnemyDetected=1 <= default = 8
RadioReport=8
Particles=8
PrayState=128 <= default = 8
HunterState=128 <= default = 32
3DRender=32
Maximum=4096 <= the default is 1024

"Maximum" acceptable values need to be a doubling (to increase) or halving (to decrease) of prior values, just like what happens in the game. 1-2-4-8-16-32-64-128-256-512-1024-2048-4096 etc.

CAVEAT: Be sure your system - the CPU and especially your graphics card - can handle the higher TC speeds without crashing or stuttering (very low frame rates). Work your way up slowly. Remember that near shore, slow frame rates are common at high TC. Save using max TC until you are well out to sea. To see the frame rates in game, hold down CTRL and press F8. The fluctuating number of FPS (frames per second) will appear in a grey box at the top center of your screen. Repeat to hide frame rates.

It works
but only at 4096 I still have decent fps (14-20).Higher is a slide show.

Just throwing in my two-cent's worth here, The Type IX always focused on being a long range alternative to the Type VII. All Type IX boats have lower maneuverability compared to Type VIIs and perform comparably worse while submerged. Submerged evasion in a Type IX is a real nail-biter. Since range is what defines the Type IX, I would go for either the IXC or hold out for a IXD2. Likewise, the second stern tube is a compensation for the lower maneuverability. As far as AA armaments go, I never worry about it because when I hear "Flugzeug gesichtet!" I crash dive-no questions asked. Flak guns are there to make you feel better. If you are flat-footed on the surface by a plane, you are in trouble. Period.

All of my experiences in Type IXs have been mixed. The range and extra torpedo tube (and torpedoes) are great, but they dive and maneuver like lazy pigs. It is something to bear in mind when planning attacks. Always have multiple escape courses planned.

if you use realistic fuel then you may well want the IX C for its longer range, otherwise its up to you

I tend to start a career with an IXB then upgrade only when the IXD2 becomes available.

From these two I prefer clearly the IXC type. With this long range boat I can hunt in all hunting grounds (South America, South Africa etc.):arrgh!:

TBO, IMO, You shouldnt need FPS at anything over 256. I always (try to be) in map view when using high compression, otherwise I'll miss map updates. If you're trying to run the boat tactically at high FPS, you'll definately miss something, or your crew will.

Ok, by your advices i took the IXC for the longer range and the nail biting fear ( a big part of the SH experience in my opinion) I use the flak to sink the ships with about 2000 tons or less( close up and right in the bow).
Thanks everyone for your help.
