From Florida:

FORT MYERS - Lee County deputies busted an elaborate cockfighting ring. It was quite an operation. Each bird can go for more than $5,000. Investigators say after a tipster came forward, they made made their move.

Deputies estimate the cockfighting ring is worth more than $500,000. Made up of roosters and hens. All injected with hormones and all bred to fight.

"It's saddening to see this happened here in Lee County," said Sgt. David Velez, with the Lee County Sheriff's Office.

Deputies raided the property on Neal Road in Fort Myers on Wednesday morning. They discovered more than 100 birds and a fighting ring. Spurs and razors were attached to some of their feet. This all went down because the house is for sale. An interested home buyer stopped by to check it out.
"While they're out there, they noticed this particular property they were looking at had a large amount of chickens and roosters that were in cages," explained Sgt. Velez.

Detectives say they belonged to 50-year-old Roberto Torres, the homeowner. He faces felony charges. Among them, baiting, breeding and selling the animals.

"In many cases, these chickens are injected with unknown chemicals in order to make them bigger, stronger," said Sgt. Velez.

That hits too close to home for James Rewis. He lives two properties away but says he doesn't get involved.

"They don't bother me," said Rewis. "I don't bother them."
Especially, since deputies say more arrests may be in store.
Torres is still in jail facing a $3,000 bond. As for the birds, according to law, they'll be euthanized because they were bred to fight.

I have to confess that I just don't get the cock-fighting thing.

You sit around and bet on chickens fighting?:doh::doh: Really?

But according to this, it is big business. I just don't get the attraction. :nope:

We have a lot of animal fighting here in Va and NC, more in the mountains and mostly dogs. We have tried to save some fighting dogs in the past, but 99% have to be put down. One of our Tibetans was a rescued fighter, he is finally good with people, but will attack and kill another dog on site, except the girl Tibetan he accepted. He once tore down two gates to get at a large Rott, snapped it's neck and killed it in less than a minute. We can't home it, so right now it's life in the kennel. Our only hope is a rancher in Montana..

Quite barbaric in my estimation and dog fighting is even worse.

Looks more like a chicken farm to me. I once supervised the installation of a fire alarm system in an actual cockfighting facility. It was called a sportsmans club.:haha: They even had bleachers and a snack bar in there with a cctv system so you could eat your snacks and still watch the fighting in the main ring. It was raided and shut down on opening night for illegal gambling. Not for the inhumane treatment of barnyard fowl.
Where was it you ask? Let's just say that Colonel Sanders would've gotten all the losers.:O:
Cockadoodle doooo or as the girls downtown say; Any cock'll do.:hmmm:

I actually admire dogs fighting to protect or guard their flocks/owners. Here's an old video of some mountain dogs fighting wolves. Mountain dogs use bumping and smother tactics. They're tough fighters guarding what they love.

To me this is beautiful to watch.

The title is wrong, not wolfhounds, more a Šar Mountain Dog
