Hey everyone. A buddy let me try Silent Hunter 5 for a bit at his house and it seemed fun so I went out an bought it on steam and activated it on Uplay which I thought was unusual. You would think that it would just run from steam directly like most other games do but ok. So I got Uplay going and I tried updating the game from the steam Directory(Steam--SteamApps--Common--Silent Hunter 5--Support--Gameupdater)
Cause well everyone says the 1.2 update is a must have for Silent Hunter 5 but it updates then says no installation of Silent Hunter exists which is well stupid because im updating the game from the installed directory!!!!
(Using Windows 8 64bit) The game runs cause ive run it and it loads and plays etc.. It just wont update. If anyone has a solution to that It would be appreciated and then the second question is mods.. I hear there is like 50 ofem and you pay to get them. For a beginner are they worth it? I have a highend card(GTX 760) So any graphic enhancements would be cool. Thanks for reading and for any help

I cant help with the steamupdate stuff .. as I trie to avoid steam as the plague. From the limited experience I do have with it, you just use the steam client to update the game afaik ..

The mods are free .. there is a download limit on accounts tho .. you can download 5 mods a day .. cheapest membership makes that 25 AND gives access to the bonus area, where most mods that are current and semi stable are packed together in zip's.

Without the mods, the game is worthless imho. You, being a steam user, have the issue that you can not patch the .exe directly .. you'd need to get a copy of boxed version 1.2 .exe and place that in your install folder, probably after you copied that to a new location in order to make steam unaware of it's location and changed .exe

Afaik, there are no important registry settings to worrie about so copy\paste should work, altho it might mess with the default paths suggested by some tools.

So yeah, mods are essential and patcher is highly recommended due to the stock version being riddled with bugs that make it ok as arcade shooter, but if you want realism, and working sensors, you need mods and patches.

Welcome :)

Thanks. I went ahead and subscribed as I love sim games and I see myself spending hours with this game. I moved the install directory out of steam and into the C: Drive itself. Im gonna go look for that 1.2 update online before I mod the game. I downloaded JSGME so I should be set there.

EDIT: I moved the installation Directory to the Ubisoft Folder(Program Files--Ubisoft) where I own a few other games from Ubisoft and the game still wont update.. The Gameupdater keeps saying I don't have the game installed. I wonder if its Uplay. This is strange. I need to figure out where the patches are trying to read the game or where they think the game should be.

Moving the game around before it's updated wont work for sure .. steam will err.

Perhaps this topic (http://steamcommunity.com/app/48110/discussions/0/864947149129355768/) can be of help ? There's an updater from ubisoft listed somewhere in the comments .. I'm pretty sure you need the game to be in it's original location tho.

What I was talking about with the patcher, concerns patches made by the community, because ubisoft management pulled the plug on development too soon and didnt fix it, so 'they' did it themselves. These community made patches can only be applied to the boxed version .. cuz steam replaces the .exe with a loader .. and fetches the original .exe at game start .. from the steam cloud .. where we cant patch it.

Guess im just a contributor then lol. I guess steam automatically updates the game or something I hear. If I knew about not being able to mod with steam I would have bought the boxed version. Ahh well Ill have to go out and get the boxed version. It should be somewhere out there for a decent price.

Steam wont update the game, it will be updated by Ubisoft once it is launched. Its part of the DRM this game has attached to it, make sure the game is installed where Steam put it, go ahead and verify the cache and then launch it. Uplay should update it while it launches, you'll know if it is 1.2 when you get to the main menu, it will say v1.2 in the upper right corner.

Steam isn't so bad, you just have to know how it works.

Thanks for the tip Oleander. Says 1.2.0 up in the right corner. Guess that's a plus at least lol

Yes you cant use the TDW Patcher with the steam version , which is fixing many bugs

You can, you just need to work around a few minor issues. Like steam changing the executable back, and getting a non-steam 1.2 executable for the game.

If you manage that, you're golden for the patcher ;) (and this is not at all hard)

Yes thats right but it wont work with the steam .exe

My game version is 1.2.0

What if I never played the game from steams application or I moved the installation out of steam and used JSGME and always used the exe in the folder.

Would steam still be able to change the executable if I moved the game say... ProgramFiles--Ubisoft

Hmm if you use the steam version do you use the sh5.exe from the dvd version that you can use the tdw patcher?

You can pick up a DVD version of the game for silly prices from Amazon, its where I got mine. Also the Gamersgate version would be just a Uplay version as well, so that would work. I know it might sound a bit offputting buying another version and all that, but if you want to mod it and patch the executable and have a real immersive experience with the game, then that is what I would really suggest.

You jst need the .exe of dvd version.

Krono99
10-04-13, 04:16 PM
I don't have the DVD Version. Even if I use JSGME with the exe in the folder steam will overwrite the exe and the mods wont work right? As is my understanding

Oleander

I modded my steam version and haven't had any trouble with running 1.2 unless that patcher does something else I don't know about.

You can use all mods with it. The only thing that wont work is the tdw patcher which fixes many bugs

Ok I think im on the right path here. I can run the mods but the TDW Patcher fixes most bugs and I can only get it through the silent hunter 5 DVD executable. Ok so I guess Ill go out and comb the net and see if someone has uploaded the DVD exe and then if I get lucky and find it Ill replace it with mine. You would think someone out there in the world has uploaded it.

Sparrs keep cool he dont have to buy it twice if someone upload it for him

Yea sorry, just stating that its cheap on Amazon for the disc. I agree, surely there must be a way to copy the steam installation and replace the .exe to another folder, thats cool.

Oleander

Is it the .exe that is different or is it steam verifying the game at launch that changes mods to the executable?

If I need another exe I'd like to search around as well, I don't feel like buying another copy and waiting around, money being what it is and all.

afaik, this should work. Steam checks it's install dir ... copy tho, so you dont muck the steam version up ;)

As far as I know steam isn't doing anything that I can visibly see when I start the game from the exe in the folder. Ive combed over tons and tons of pages and surprisingly I cant find it anywhere. Maybe Gap can hook us up :D

Negative! Gap is one our best tech responders to all problem questions and most knowledgeable modders. He may even respond in Swahili as needed! Welcome aboard by the way Krono99!:salute::Kaleun_Salute:

The steam sh5.exe is not the sh5.exe .. it's a program that fetches the real .exe in memory. That's why it cannot be patched.

Perhaps if you replace the exe and run that instead of starting it through steam, steam wont 'repair' your installation .. you'd have to test tho.

I think that would be akin to piracy .. and surely not legal, as everybody and their dog would be able to download it .. and while it's not the complete product, I doubt regulation makes a distinction.

So yeah, best NOT to ask him to post it to the forum ;)

Best not distribute if you manage to find it .. see 2nd post on this page for why :p

Ok I wont distribute it. I guess I should have said if your willing to upload it don't do it on the forums!!! Maybe he will think about it and say best not to put it in here.
Wouldn want to put someone in jeopardy for helping me out. You know you would think steam would be like "Lets add everything we can to help the player"
If they added everything that was in the DVD exe such as the TDW for bug fixes there would be no need for this. But I guess a lot of people buy the physical copy
of the game now these days. Im just used to buying games electronically I don't think about it.

Is it me or does it take forever to get back to Kiel in the tutorial. Feels like I haven't moved an inch going at 7 knots. Seems like I moved faster heading to destroy those first few boats. Guess it is a true sim as it can be but does it really want you to sit there for maybe a hour while you head towards Kiel? Its like give me 110% on the reactor! I don't wanna sit here all night heading back to base lol

Do that and you will quickly find yourself banned for life from SubSim. You might want to go back and delete your last few posts. I'm only being this nice because you are brand new here. The rules are quite strict on this subject.
We do NOT allow discussion or even mention of game piracy, warez, peer-to-peer game swapping, game cracks, illegal download sites, or illegal file-sharing. Nothing will get you banned faster than pointing people to illegal software distribution sites. Don't ask for serial numbers, manuals, or cracks. Any admission that you have in your possession illegal software can and usually will result in revocation of your Radio Room forum account and permanent ban. We do not care what you do on your computer in your home, but do not discuss it here.Support computer game programmers buy legally purchasing their work. They have to eat too, you know.
What you do in private is none of our business, but talking about it here is strictly off-limits.
