A meet here in the US would be nice.

I have always been, and i still remain a proponent of the "regional subsim groups" if such a thing could be organized and interest maintained, it could mean a lot for more localized meets for a lot of users.

What about the International Fleet Review in Sydney? That's on pretty soon, and as a group interested in naval warfare it would seem appropriate.

Nothing against Australia but do you have any idea how much a trip there costs?Unless you live in Asia or the Pacific Islands it is very expensive.

From Florida the cheapest for a round trip with two layovers is $1,870 and that seat is in the back by the coffee maker and I hate coffee.

I can fly to London for $969 the rest of Europe for around the same the costs for a European to fly to the US is about the same.

From Europe it would be maybe 400 or 500 less for the tickets and that is just the flight.

Look at the bright side as an Aussie you can go on trip to some very exotic places in SE Asia for a fairly low cost.

It is most fair if you are going to have one subsim meet every so often that it be in Europe. It is very hard to organize such meets though many busy schedules to deal with.

I think the super small handful of member meets are cool less schedules to deal with.

I have a half sister that is an Aussie (she born there in 1968 US Army dad Aussie mother) at some point when I get the time and money saved up I am going to go on a long trip to visit her I can stay some of the time at her house which makes the trip a little cheaper unless I wear out my welcome. When I do(go on this trip) I'll come by and visit you Cyber and the other Aussie subsimmers. This will be a good while yet though not until my daughter is out of high school and she is just 9 now.

Non stop the lowest price is 2,011 US dollars.

I see your point :/\\!!

That would be amazing. When is it? Annual thing? A international trip will be difficult for me until summer due to classes though, I graduate in the spring so next year around this time or in summer would be possible.

As it starts tomorrow I doubt many international subsimmers would get here in time unless they were leaving now.

You are obviously not aware that Neal has a VIP Guest planned for the meet.
Hint: He will, apart from the congratulatory speech to Neal, also give a speech about the PBHS and how war was averted in the Middle East by him :haha:

Second that vote, so much history there and Patriot's Point for WW2. Maybe a few of us that deplore yankee aggression could have a southern style Subsim meet.

We could reenact Fort Sumter. I know some reenactors that have working cannon. I know I wouldn't mind taking a few long range pot shots at a few members here.

I'm up to it. We had a mini-meet in my hometown last year, we were only three members, but it was very pleasant and fun to meet them in flesh and blood.
US or UK are fine to me, they have tons of naval attractions and I'd love to invade both again.

I know this has been mooted before but London, or thereabouts would be great, there are some proper history musea - not just the last couple of hundred years. :O: And Pompey/Gosport is just a couple of hours drive away with HMS Victory, Mary Rose, HMS Warrior, the 112 year old sub Holland 1, the midget sub X24, and HMS Alliance. The biggest obstacle is the organisational element (many of us are busy in RL) and the fact that you usually get a healthy number of 'yes I'll go' which ultimately dwindles down to less than half for one reason/excuse or another.

Personally speaking I've only been to the one in Houston, organised by Neal in 2008 and that was really something else, meeting Neal, Steve, Jason, Chad, Dan, three Grey Wolves (plus one wife) and too many more to mention.

The one in Denmark was one that clashed with my 25th wedding anniversary so no feeble excuse there.

A SS Meet is something I would recommend everyone should attend because it is a unique opportunity to meet people in person but that might also be a reason for some people not attending....certainly their loss, not mine.

If it was up to me, I'd look around for a cheap cruise or all inclusive resort. Last time I went to a forum meet, a few guys ended up puking all over the host's back yard.

Considering that if we don't go in the peak season, cruises are pretty reasonably priced. We can just meet up in texas or florida, hop on a cruise ship, and sail out to see for a week or so.

I'd vote London, if we had some cheap accommodations. Jim or Herr-Berr's flat:hmmm:. Anywhere in the US would be cool.

If you want to see ships, the Fall River subsim meet up can't be beat.

Considering that if we don't go in the peak season, cruises are pretty reasonably priced. We can just meet up in texas or florida, hop on a cruise ship, and sail out to see for a week or so.

A cruise would be a good way to meet everyone with or without a wife or girlfriend, double occupancy is always in every price.

Food is included, entertainment, skeet shooting perhaps, single ladies perhaps, casino, sunsets, meeting rooms, picture taking, fellowship, sea stories ...

Same problems as a land locked meet, air fare, transportation, passports, visa's, but everyday cost would be reduced.

Houston is a long way, but they do have cruise ships that meet that pull into port there along with Corpus Christi and New Orleans. It doesn't have to be a whole week or even a cruise to anywhere special.

I think we should plan for a super subsim meet for the 20th anniversary coming up in three more years.

Super subsim meet in Hawaii would be my best choice with the USS Missouri and the Arizona memorial and at least one WWII submarine and many other Navy ships available for open house or even request a VIP tour of a nuclear submarine.

Yes, Hawaii would be great, but oh the planning and moans and groans and the financial problem of saving say $60.00 a month for the trip 39 months from now. A special bank account set-up with automatic deposit would be great for self discipline.

This year is a goner, next year plan a cruise and when is the 20th anniversary anyway 2017???

Neal said he already spends 2 hours a day mending subsim so it would make sense to elect someone that doesn't have enough funds to put it all together and get a free cruise or at least plane fare for the trip.

Someone like Sailor Steve hint hint :D

I like this new cruise ship from Star Pride, it's more yacht like, but only does the Mediterranean:http://www.usatoday.com/story/cruiselog/2013/05/21/windstar-star-pride-mediterranean-itineraries/2346453/

Passengers will explore the Black Sea, the Corinth Canal and other corners of the Mediterranean region on Windstar's newest ship, Star Pride.

The yacht-style cruise line has announced 2014 itineraries for the vessel, beginning next May.

The 212-passenger, 106-cabin ship is the first of three identical vessels acquired by the company. Each is 440 feet long, 63 feet wide and has six passenger decks.

If I might recommend Napa CA along the greasy green banks of the Napa river where the finishing shots of Apocalypse Now were done; with tours to the regarded San Francisco Maritime Museum: Baleo class sub; only one of two operational Liberty ships (A Sacramento river cruise is possible aboard her) the Balclutha clipper ship, aircraft-carrier Hornet, and the former Presidential yacht now operational on the Bay ETC. Throw in a Hornblower Dinnerboat cruise on the Bay and all the wine tasting (residents and their GUESTS are free-custom breweries for Jimbuna) with a tour of Mare Island Sub facilities on the Napa river at Vallejo and the Subsim theme is upheld. Plan it during fleet week or a Tall Ships week and joy is complete. The jetcat ferry from Vallejo to Fishermans Wharf and the Baleo/ Liberty exhibit is also a first-rate demo of marine twin hull harmonic convergence! And it will save Steelhead airfare to Australia. Unfortunately the battleship Iowa was towed to its new location from the ghost fleet on the Sacramento River and is no longer in the Bay area. I will shortly be refreshing my nav skills piloting my neighbor's 25' daysailor from the Alameda estuary to the Benicia Yacht harbor and its new home berth, a northward sojourn, against a prevailing westerly breeze, of 10 hours; I am assured the stays, halyards and the Nissan engine are restored to condition able...if I don't post again, someone drop a wreath off the Hornblower-iron men and fiberglass hulls-Gadzooks!:Kaleun_Thumbs_Up:

This has come up before, and most of the time it goes nowhere, for the simple reason that everybody thinks it's a great idea, but nobody wants to actually be the one to do the work. All it takes is for one person to act like they really want to see it through and it can be made to happen. Unless that happens, it's all just talk.

That's why you set up a special bank account that lets you automatically deposit say $50 to $60 a month out of your bank account to a vacation meet fund set up say through a Houston bank.

Only serious members need to reply by putting their money where the subsim account is at.

A subsim thread could be closed for posting unless you have 10% already deposited showing your sincerity. The other wantabe members at a subsim meet can still read the post, but only members already committed can beat the drums and look forward to the meet.

I'm sure if we can get a few smaller meets organised then it'll whet the appetites for a bigger one. It's much cheaper for people to dip their toes in the same or nearby country than fly halfway round the world so it's more likely to happen and more likely to attract more people. Or not.

Here are an idea I have had since my first meeting in Holland 2005.

Each year we get together in some semi-meetings in USA and Europe and maybe a third meeting somewhere else in the world

Every second year we have a BIG meeting shifting between USA and Europe. Those years we have this big meeting there isn't any semi-meetings.

Example

year 2014:
Semi-meeting in Europe(London perhaps)
Semi-meeting in USA(don't know where

Year 2015 Big meeting in USA

For me, there are some here that I would rather keep at keyboard distance. :yep:

At least online, you can ignore them, but in person you have to pretend to be pleased to meet them.

But for the members who are into that sort of stuff, I say gopher it!

Make it so!

Meet in the middle, Omaha Nebraska. and tour the USS Hazard (WWII Minesweeper) and the USS Marlin (Training Sub). There is also the SAC Air museum on Offutt AFB, which is a pretty good sized air museum.

Some of us already did....in 2008 I crossed the Atlantic and Tarjak the Pacific to meet up with Neal, The Grey Wolves and community friends.

The plan went like clock work. For awhile.
Nancy and I drove from Ohio to Texas to meet Jim and Grant in a well planned, 1st gathering of The Grey Wolves at a SubSim meet.

It went as planned up until everyone got to the Airport.
:nope:

It got down right hilarious from there!
:har:

It would be nice to have another international meet, but we would have to plan it out a year in advance, and set up some kind of system where people will pledge to come. The last meet, even I didn't show up :( (new job, couldn't get out of work).

Once every 4 years is probably reasonable.

Reasonable? REASONABLE? I might not live that long! A lot can happen in four years!

What am I saying? I didn't make the last two.

I'll go take my meds now.

Ideally we'd have simultaneous Subsim meets, East Coast USA, West Coast USA, London UK, Sydney Australia, anywhere else?
In that case us Ubirats can actually meet each other. :Kaleun_Goofy:

Come visit, I've got a lot of dirt that needs moving. Get time, we'll do some redneck rapid riding down the river, it's better than the "open bucket" ride at the park..

Why not a series of synchronized mini meets?

I would be in :yep: heck it seems long over due considering the last one was 5 years ago

I'll just have my own private meeting here where I live.

Maybe I'll meet myself. That could be interesting. :D
