I am sure some of you played the Thief titles at some point.I played all three some time ago.

So I decided to pick up the Thief Collection from Gamers Gate(for the Blue Coins :D) Thief Gold,Thief II,and Thief Deadly Shadows.

These games are pretty darn cool in a lot of respects and they true stealth games. It is really fun to sneak around and whack a guy in the noggin with a blackjack I must say.Of course you have other gizmos to use like flash bombs and water arrows(douse torches),noise marker arrows,Moss arrows(spread moss on the ground to make for silent stepping on noisy surfaces).

The AI is pretty darn good even in Thief Gold a 1998 game. The guards have fairly good hearing and they will notice things like a closed door being open and come to investigate.I also love what the guards say to themselves and each other. It can be rather funny. For example in Thief Gold the Hammerites they kind of remind me of Monty Python and the Holy Grail."Come forth from the shadows and show thee".

Thief and Thief II have more or less the exact same play dynamics and the same engine and Thief Deadly Shadows uses Unreal(I think) the game play is a little different from the previous games though still plenty of good fun sneaking around to do.

One thing I do not like in Deadly Shadows is that the blackjack hit detection is IMO nerfed if they even began to turn it wont knock them out.In the previous titles even if you are spotted if you startled them you can get a knock out if you hit them right as they react. To me that is more realistic it takes a few seconds to ready for combat and in that time a sudden strike should still knock out.You can also get a startled knockout even head on in the older titles which again I think is more realistic again it not like a person just suddenly becomes knock out proof in 1 nano second.

Anyway just thought that I would mention a good old PC game series in case you guys are bored of the newer stuff. You can get all three for $19.99 on Steam or GG and GOG also has the titles or get one them for about $6~$8 dollars.

There is a Thief 4 coming out but it looks nothing like the old games and is not even on my radar screen to be honest.

If you pick up one or all of the titles there are some mods you basically need to make the games run well on a modern OS.Thief and Thief II need one of two mods
Someone made a guide for Thief Gold and Thief II you can use their mod TGtool/T2Tool or TFix/TafferPatcher links in the links. For Thief Deadly Shadows you can play that unmodded but I would use
Sneaky Upgrade as it improves the game play by fixing tons of little bugs and it had FOV fixes and widescreen support as well.

I have been a huge Thief fan since the first one. :yeah:

Have you been able to complete the captain's mansion mission on hard without taking the widow's money? That is the one mission I can't do on hard. According the the websites, it is possible to complete it on hard and not steal the widow's money.

Deadly shadows is my favourite one. To me, the series just gets better with every version.

Stealth, sneaking, and avoiding... my kind of game.

Unfortunately, I have played Thief deadly shadows so many times it is getting tough to keep up the interest.

Any word on when Thief 4 is coming out? Looking forward to that even though it will probably require steam. :nope:

I do not think I ever beat that one mission on hard.Right now I play on a lower difficulty level just to get used to the games dynamics again.

Thief 4 is supposed to come out some time in 2014 but it just does not look very good to me and the devs have already said that there will be no jumping.:hmmm: Which is an odd game play choice which makes it sound to me like the game is going to be a "press button here and press to do this action for a few minutes between cuts scenes" type of game which is just not my bag at all. With Thief epically which has always been a go your own way type game.

Anyway I would not hold your breath hoping for a good game lest a Colonial Marines baby Alien of disappointment burst from your chest.

I would wait until it gets released and see what is what. The other thing that kind off bugs me is that they are already taking pre-orders which screams over hype to me.

Take a look at the Steam page honestly some of the video clips to me i really do not like the look of the game. The second one a modernish looking bank with cameras? Yukkie. Kinda looks to me like they are making a Assassins Creed/Dishonored clone when they should be making a Thief title that stands on it own.

I know that a game series should advance that is not the problem what I am not liking is this new Thief looks unlike Thief and too much a like an intimation of more recent games set in a steampunk universe but not the universe of Thief.

I think they are hoping that legacy Thief fans will get hyped and buy preorder. Not gonna happen with me i will wait until this is released and has had some honest reviews.

From the trailers it looks like a major upgrade from Deadly Shadows. Bigger, more realistic environment. Yes, the storyline sounds just a bit like Dishonored (given the whole plague portion) but it does look worth my time to keep following it.

Well according to what the devs say it is a complete "re-envisioning" and it takes place in a different universe from the previous titles. So I kind of beg to question if it is so re-envisioned to the point where most lore is tossed out why call it a Thief game? :hmmm:

Of course it will be an upgrade in graphics from a game that will be 10 years old when the new Thief hits shelves or digital shelves.Only thing though is in all of those trailers those are clearly CGI cut scenes not normal game play. And a game that has a franchise history needss to do more than just look better it needs to play better. We'll see as I said when some honest reviews come along.I have read in some forums legacy fans have the general opinion that this new Thief might be a decent game on its own but not that good of a continuation of the Thief lore.

That is my issue when you take a series and make such major changes as putting it in a different universe well then you pretty much have something entirely different so why not start something all new. It would be like taking Star Wars and then keeping the name but the universe is changed and everything is like Star Trek in other words the only thing really the same is the base genre.

To me this is what it looks like they are doing and it just seems cheap to me.Kind like they felt that the idea for a game they had which involved sneaking round and such was weak so they just decided to use the name of a previous franchise.

This is just my personal opinion really this new game just does not look that good as a true Thief title to me.It just makes no sense for there to be the advances in technology you see in the screen shots it looks like 300 years past in the span of one humans life. But of course that is the thing it takes place in another universe.:shifty: I'll pass for sure on pre order or first day purchase.

I think that is a very wise attitude. I too fear that they have messed up the game.

I have never played any of the mod/fan levels. Have you? Any of them any good?

I would say that first person sneek games are more of a niche than simulator games. I wish they would just leave it alone.

The thief series was just my type of game. I hope they won't mess up game 4.... but I am not optimistic.

Hell, they will probably put multi-player into it. :/\\!!:/\\!!:/\\!!
