Just about to set up an attack on an outbound convoy. Square AK55, May 1941.

The second column consists of (from front to back) a Large Tanker, RMS Aquitania and a Ceramic liner! Even the outer column had 2 Large Merchants!

There is some huge tonnage in this convoy!

That's when you need a better angel in your ear whispering "just go for one of them for now."

Good luck!

Well, I decided to go with the sink a little vs. damage a lot approach.

I fired Tubes I-IV at Aquitania and hit with 3 of them. Put her down by the bow; she was under in about 20 minutes.

As the moon set, I was able to stay undetected on the surface and reload all 4 tubes. Made my second attack run 2 hours later. Fired Tubes I & III at the Ceramic and II & IV at the Large tanker. Observed 2 hits on the Ceramic under the foremast and the stack.

Unfortunately, starshells were fired directly over my boat as I was trying to sneak away and forced me to dive. No further detonations were heard, but my soundman heard the Ceramic sinking and breaking apart shortly afterwards.

Took a few close depth charges but finally evaded the escorts and return to Brest! 53,136 in with 2 ships ain't bad!

I hate convoys, destroyers always seem to notice me no matter what I do :shifty:

I hear you, and the later in the war, the worse it becomes. I did have fun with a large convoy last night though. I attacked during a heavy rain squall near the Canadian coast in October 1942. Could not see the ships in the convoy until 400M, but I was at periscope depth, kept my head on a swivel, listened for the escorts and bagged a large merchant, medium cargo, a whale factory ship, small merchant, and a large tanker. Because of the poor weather, I was able to slip away and the heavy seas helped sink the ships I torpedoed. The escorts came looking for me, but never dropped any depth charges. Perhaps this will be my new attack plan with my Type IX's from now on.

Goodness gracious.... at 400M visibility at night, how did you even set up the shots? They must have been zigging all over you.

Nice one, making me remember the scene from Torpedo Run where they fired a couple of torpedoes only by listening from hydrophone cause the periscope suffered heavy damage from an anti-sub net.

Thanks! LOL. Most of the shots were done by me plotting the courses of the ships in the convoy based on my hydrophones. Then I would wait for the last second to start to see the ship and fire. I did spend a while plotting and listening before I attacked. One of the Large Merchants almost ran me over. He turned hard to port at the last second during the zig zag and barely missed my stern. Had me panicking, throwing the sub into flank to avoid the impact. But given what I bagged, and no retaliation from the escorts, it was worth every second!

I just tried another attack, this one in the Gulf of Mexico against a huge tanker convoy! This time I was not as successful as before, but still bagged 2 medium tankers, one large tanker and two Clemson class destroyers that got nosy. I had 2 torpedoes miss and another detonate to soon. I just happened to dive since I was in the middle of a nasty storm and heard a Convoy that was, according to my calculations, around 2000m and 35 degrees to my starboard side. I pressed the attack anyway.

Now, it has taken me a while to make this tactic work to some extent. But if you are up for a challenge, and want the Escorts to leave you alone, it is a lot of fun.
