View Full Version : Why is everything about this game so difficult?

So I tried installing the TDW UI mod. I'm guessing it only works from periscope view, because it definitely was not working when I walked around the ship?
So I exited and then decided to try it from periscope view, well instead of loading up the game normally, it Crashed to Desktop. Great, I gotta reinstall it and try modding all over again.
So I uninstall it.
I bought a dvd version of the game, that would install faster.
I load in the dvd and it doesn't give me the option to install, but it did say "Register" so I go to register, go on ubi.com's website and register the product to the best of my ability.
Pull back up the DVD and once again, the install feature of it is faded out, meaning I must not have properly done it.
Why can't it be like the Steam version of the game? I double click it and it starts installing automatically?
So this DVD version is useless, and the mods, even when Im sure I'm installing them 100% correctly, they don't show up. I need some modder to 1 on 1 with me so I can get the game to work right. I've modded games for over a decade, most of my games are modded. The only problem is this one is practically unplayable without boatloads of mods, and I really want to play it.
Im starting up another 3 hour installation of the game from my steam account, I don't know anything about getting the DVD version to load up. If anyone can please, offer me some help, that I'm badly in need of, please chime in this thread and help me go over each and every problem I'm having to get the game to working in a reasonable manner.

Hi,
I am pretty sure that the install button is greyed out if the install believes the game to be installed, most likely due to registry entries left behind by the steam install.
If you are sure the uninstaller ran to completion, and you have restarted your computer after, perhaps it might be worth running the registry mode of ccleaner or something similar - often when I uninstall software and I run ccleaner, some registry entries are left behind; they are usually harmless but they might be causing a problem while trying to install two different versions of the same game.
With regards to the mods, I noticed in the screenshot that you posted in another thread that you had activated the New UIs scope directory (the one that is labelled in 7.5.0 as 'do not activate', I'm unsure about 7.4) and your mod order appears to be incorrect.
Are you following a list?
Kind Regards.

? Works from all views.
Not suggesting you are incompetent, far from it, but have you checked the d/l ui mod from TDW? Specifically, inside the folder? It catches a lot of people out because the d/l mod is NOT yet ready to be used by JSGME. You have to do some manual work, ie. inside folder is another folder.
So I exited and then decided to try it from periscope view, well instead of loading up the game normally, it Crashed to Desktop. Great, I gotta reinstall it and try modding all over again. Sounds to me like a bigger issue than the UI Mod. And why re-install? Unless you meant re-load mods in a correct loadout order?
Another thing, keep in mind, you may well of course be aware of this but the Genereic patcher by TDW is NOT compatible with the steam version of the game. Just letting you know is all.

Ok thanks for the heads up. I've modded lots of games in my time. I'll admit I'm not the best at it in that I've had trouble modding games that involved more than just double click the icon of the mod or put it in the correct folder.
Technically I do own SHIII (I got it for free in some deal for a different game, I forget how) and never played it. I like the visuals in SH5, and there is no game in my vast library of games, where I can sit back with a beer and just have some relaxing yet awesome fun, except for SH5. Even with the bugs I find myself very immersed in it, I get scared as all heck when my crewman yells out "Pressure hull damaged!" (I have the sound up high for voices in the game, so this really does kinda scare me unlike almost every other game I own) and at that moment in time I have no idea as to why. The all important hunt, and building up to the point you get to fire torpedos, just no game like this one.
Also true story, I once was heavily focusing on a destroyer after coming out of a British harbor at periscope depth. I was so heavily focused on the destroyer through my periscope, then all of a sudden, I hear the loud sound of propellers from INSIDE the sub. I thought "What the heck is that?" I rotate the periscope to the right, and I got the scariest moment I've ever gotten in all my video game life out of all the hundreds of video games I've played (which spans since 1988 when I was 3). A destroyer, LITERALLY 5 ft from my Periscope! (I had IRAI mod at the time). In other words I was dead in the water, the sea bed was right below my keel so I couldn't crash dive to hopefully get away from it either, and had to load up an old save.
I've been a member of this forum since SH5 was almost new. I am determined this time to get it working right. A correctly modded SH5 should be better than any of the other SH games so I'll update this thread as I run into more problems.
I bought the disc version so if there was a problem with the STEAM version, I could apply it to the disc. I now have the game installed in both steam and disc format, so I can mod both at the same time til I get one to work. STeam takes a hell of a lot longer to reinstall, and yes I was finding that only a reinstall would work with steam as simply installing JSGME was enough to make it CTD.

if you don't get the "install" option to reinstall the game it means you didn't uninstall it properly and there are leftover files that must be deleted before you can be allowed to reinstall the game.
go here and follow these instructions to properly uninstall the game: http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=133290

Ok it seems having the disc version and a Steam version of the game is now screwing me over. I install the DVD version, and when I click "Play Game" it reverts me to my "Uplay" account. This then says "We'll now open up your Steam version of the game" and it starts DLC after I uninstalled the Steam version.
So here is my next idea, should I partition my hard drive, one with just this game on it, and the other with Steam on it, where a majority of my games are, so I can play my Steam games on the main part of the hard drive and just the Disc version of this game on the other?
I don't see anyway around this short of uninstalling Steam, or partitioning my harddrive and not even acknowleding to the disc or uPlay, that I have a steam version of the game. I even deleted the Steam version and it still knows I have the Steam version and automatically forces me to play that version of the game.
edit: Even tried logging into a rarely used Steam account that doesn't have the game on it, and it takes me to Steam's store page where I have the option to buy a 3rd copy of the game, also Steam.
Getting this game to work may require a larger hard drive, if I'm gonna have to partition it out to one without steam. Sure is a lot of work just to play one game, but I don't give up in the face of a daunting challenge like this too easily.
Update: Im now uninstalling the disc version, I'll read over the link. This will be about the 6th uninstall/reinstall of the game today, between my Steam account and Disc version of the game. I'll read over the uninstall guide.
Heres the problem I've been facing. It downloads the patches, and I think once they are all downloaded, it automatically links me to my Steam account and directs me to it there, or the store on my STEAM account that I didn't purchase the game on. So, if this doesn't work, I'm gonna uninstall Steam, damn the torpedos if I have to redownload my whole library of games again (Computer needs a reformat badly anyways).
Why don't you simply unistall the Steam installation of the game, keeping only the box version?

I uninstallled the STEAM version, then opened up an account on STEAM where I don't even own the game. Uplay automatically directs me to steam because it knows I own a copy on STEAM. If its not forcing me to download the STEAM version of the game, its only allowing me to buy a STEAM version online, it simply refuses to play the DVD version of the game I bought, no matter what I did.
I did a complete uninstall of the game, manually deleted all Ubi content and anything the game left behind from previous installs, and restarted the computer. Now Im loading it up again. I've been up nearly 24 hours working on this now, thank god for coffee.
The next thing Im gonna try is uninstalling Steam altogether. If that doesn't work, I may have to make a new Uplay account so Ubi doesn't even know I have a STEAM version under this profile.
Probably you have already done it, but I would proceed like this: :hmm2:
- unistall both copies of the game and the ubi launcher
- remove manually any SH5/UBI file which might remain on your HD
- clean your registry from SH5/ubi launcher installations' left-overs, using CC cleaner or a similar program.
- re-install only the boxed version of SH5
Probably need to use a new UBI ID for the DVD version, since your other code is tied to Steam version.

I have reasons to belive that the DVD version would accept the same username/password as the Steam one. :yep:
What I have wondered: Since the steam and dvd version differ only in that the steam version needs to unpack it's .exe first, aren't the .exe's interchangable ? It seems to me that a steam install with dvd .exe should work fine ? (Well .. a 1.2 patch .exe ... dvd would be 1.0 :p)

If that was the case, then TDW would make a TDW patcher for Steam, too. TDW said something like too complicated or time consuming.

Yes, you are correct: a Steam copy of the game whose excutable is replaced with the one of the dvd version (patched with official patch 1.2), will still accept the old Steam username/password, and indeed will be fully compatible with the patcher by TDW :yep:

Alright Im gonna try this today. I got the DVD version installed, I had to make a new Uplay account specifically for it. I am redownloading all my Steam games now. Luckily my save for Skyrim didn't disappear, I had spent dozens of hours in that game building up my character and would have seriously been let down if I had to start a whole new character all over again.
Im gonna work on installing some mods today. Generic Patcher by TDW, do I install each of his mods in it individually?
Also apparently for the UI mod I need to install the dials in ONE of the folders with a mod. Apparently that one has several mods that came with one.
My sub is in the subpen at this moment so I'll be doing all of my installs while its docked.
I'll update this post as I run into problems.
edit: Actually I might try mighty fine crew mod, I need the one with the profiles of several crew members on the bottom. I think thats Mighty Fine Crew? Any ideas?

Are you patched to 1.2? I would get the latest UPlay installer from Ubisoft, now version 3.2.2.
I do not know if the stock game as the crew members at the bottom, but New UIs for TDC certainly does.

No .. it means that steam users can obtain the 1.2 update file, extract the sh5.exe, and use the patcher ;)

You are talking about New UI's probably.
Open its zipped package using the latest version of WinRAR or 7Zip. Follow the path below:
NewUIs_TDC_7_4_2_ByTheDarkWraith\MODS\NewUIs_TDC_7 _4_2_ByTheDarkWraith
That one is the folder that you must enable with JSGME, for enjoying most of the features of New UIs. You also need to calibrate your scopes; follow the path below:
NewUIs_TDC_7_4_2_ByTheDarkWraith\MODS\NewUIs_TDC_7 _4_2_Scopes (do not enable - read)
Inside the above path there are four folders: open the one appropriate for the scope mode you are using. If you haven't enabled any scope mod on top of New UIs, the open the 'Manos scope mod' (this is the name ot the scope mod used by New UIs by default). Inside it, there are several folders; enable the one appropriate for the screen resolution you have set in graphics settings menu of the game.
Most common display resolutions with aspect ratios:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Display_resolution#Computer_monitors
Other folders in the package are not essential, and you can ignore them at this stage
My sub is in the subpen at this moment so I'll be doing all of my installs while its docked.
Wise decision. Even better if, depending on the other mods you are going to install, you restart your campaign :yep:
I'll update this post as I run into problems.
Hope not to see any update by you then :03:

Good mod. Strongly recommended, but a campaign restart is required with it, and it has nothing to do with the feature that you are looking for (I and Trevally have answred your question in another thread already).

Well the way I got around the Steam problem, maybe this wasn't the best way, but I made a 2nd account for the DVD version.
Unfortunately I had already uninstalled STEAM which deleted all my games (quite a lot really) but thats a minor issue. My main concern was I was going to have to start a new character in Skyrim all over again which already had dozens and dozens of hours of gameplay invested into, luckily though, I'm guessing because saved games must upload to a Cloud server or something, my character was just the same after downloading Skyrim again.
Last couple of days Ive been playing a lot of online Texas Hold Em', so far its been consistent source of income as of late, at least for a gambling game (My goal in life is to be a professional gambler in poker)
I got the User Interface mod to work, I'm going to see if I can get some more mods to work. Skin mods come last, they're the easiest to install and the easiest to see that you know you have them installed. Some of them, like the IRAI, you won't know is working until you have encountered several destroyers.
Skyrim its much easier to know if your mod is working because you can pull up "Active Effects" and it'll clearly state that you have a mod installed and working at the moment.
I'm going to mess around with some more mods and see if I can get some more stuff installed, if I play too much poker in a single session, my gameplay starts to suck and then I start to lose money and thats no good.
Edit: Question about the generic patcher by TDW
Is it normal for the files that it replaces to be the exact same size as the stock files? One thing I've noticed on almost all my mods of every game is the memory consumption of a mod file is usually different from the one it came with.

My Sonar guy is deaf dumb and blind.
Even my look out crew isn't too useful, but they're more useful than the Sonar Guy.
I heard "Smoke on the Horizon"
I looked through the periscope, saw nothing.
So I steamed ahead. Sonar Guy certainly didn't tell me anything useful
Cranked up time Compression
Next thing I know my hull looks like swiss cheese and the whole sub is flooding because a destroyer "snuck" if you can call it that since I had next to no warning this would happen and started blasting me out of the water.
If Im not mistaken Destroyers often sacrificed their guns for more depth charges because of how rare it was to catch a UBoat on the surface.
With no warning from Sonar guy and little warning from lookout, I don't know what to do under these conditions.
I upgraded the sonar and started going under water periodically to look for contacts. What do I get? Nothing. Even clicked on his ability to reveal everything, go under the waves, 2 knots speed, he doesn't find ANYTHING. NOTHING. Not even when a ship is in visual range.
Surfaced, your sonar guy SHOULD be useless ... as your sonar only works submerged. Couple that to cavitation of at high speed and he will again be fairly useless.
You dont drive a sub over to the enemy and blast away at it to then drive on. This is not GTA.
You get the clue that smoke is on the horizon .. depending on the weather, this will be barely visible through UZO or attack scope. You plot the bearing at around 15km ... and start moving in that direction, and take another bearing 5 mins later ... repeat 5 mins later, given the 5 minute interval, we know we are looking for even spaces between those lines to give us a course. We can now guestimate a speed and plot an intercept course. As soon as we have a visual, that means they can see us too. So ideally, we submerge. You'll quickly notice that unless it's a convoy, chasing targets is not gonna work unless they are unarmed and no friendly bases/carriers/destroyers are near.
Being a subcaptain is all about planning ahead based on limited data and geometry.
TC should not be used at high levels when surfaced with enemy contacts near. That's just silly.
Also, hydro is bugged in stock version. You need to use the Generic Patcher to fix him. Cant easily search for link on current puter, look for it in the mod workshop.

How do you tell the range of the closest contact? I got nothing on distance. I can't even do the stop watch test to figure out the speed if I don't know how close the contact is to my sub.
Another problem I'm running into is my Attack Periscope is useless. Completely Useless. The bottom 80% of it is blocked. I thought maybe it had something to do with a crew member while I was surfaced so I went below the waves to get the crew off the tower. Nope, even at periscope death, the attack periscope, the bottom 80% of it is blocked. I haven't been depthcharged yet so Its not damaged.
The only way to determine accurate range without a visual is by using active sonar. Ping. This WILL be picked up by listening hydro stations tho.
If you are very clean with taking bearings from hydro, you will get accurate range guestimates too .. with some practise and the four bearings method listed below.
You dont need to know the exact distance at this stage. You time your bearing moments. Because you know there is a fixed time between each bearing, and assuming the target has not changed speed (which they generally dont do unless being hunted) you can work out it's pretty exact course. You then plot an intersect point and work your way into visual range. As soon as you have visual, you can use the stadimeter for distance, after which you can plot a more exact course, taking range into account.
Check this post and guide for more detail and a better explanation.
http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=179137
In the upper left corner is a picture of your scope .. it has some arrows above and below it .. on for full raise/lower, one to raise/lower while pressed .. you did extend it, did you ?
You mean that he upload the .exe and the other files from the dvd version?
Yes, he overwrote those files, but I think only the executable is essential. All the other files affected by TDW's patches should be identical for Steam and DVD version of the game :hmm2:

Maybe yes i think you are right
It has to be true, due to the fact that the only thing steam users cant do is use the patcher .. all other files that are needed for the patcher, are also touched by mods .. thus cant be steam encrypted since they work for steam users.
That dictates that only the .exe is swapped out with a steam loader.

Wrong, the complete list of files affected by TDW's patches is available in Sjizzle's tutorial (http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showpost.php?p=2080306&postcount=1). None of those files is touched by mods. If it was so easy modding them, we wouldn't have needed for a patcher.
There's another reason for believing that non executable files are identical for both versions of the game, and it is that patches not regarding the .exe are Steam-compatible. :03:
Thanx for correcting me on that :salute: (I like to be right if possible :p)
