By default the crew with there individual skills are supposedly placed in the most appropriate compartment block. After an air attack I had many injured and was forced to mix them up some until they got healthy. Later I decided I better figure out who goes where. I'm running RFB plus RSRD and thought I share some insights. Feel free to correct my logic.

Each compartment has an Officer on Deck (OOD). The OOD will give each crew member in that compartment extra skill points. So its important to chose the right OOD. Look up Rank and Ratings on the web if you need more on this but basically the number in brackets after crewman's title helps. The larger placement block is for the OOD. The Conning Tower has two large placement blocks. We'll come back to that later.

First I find it easiest to place crew in the Aft and Fwd TORPEDO ROOMS since there is so few of them and there skills are somewhat obvious. The torpedo rooms have a compartment leader instead of OOD. Look for a Petty Officer first class (6) or chief with the torpedo abilities. Also check leadership skill on these compartment leaders you may find extra qualified men competing for the job.

Next I check each crew member for the sensory skill and place the highest ones on the MAIN DECK. I mouse hoover over the vertical green bar to check the point rating for the compartment as a whole. Switching crewmen around to get the best ratings. Find an officer to place in the OOD block. I like to place my highest ranking men here, with highest sensory ratings.

Then place crewmen with high machinery and electrical skills in the MAIN PROPULSION and CONTROL ROOMS. Of course the crewmen with Sonar abilities go in the CONNING TOWER or MAIN DECK (if more then three available).

The diagram above shows the CONTROL ROOM positions of your crew as placed in the blocks lettered A-G with the OOD behind the chart table. Notice E position floats from desk to forward panels. I like to place my next highest ranking man in the CONTROL room in position E. The low ranking seamen work the planes.

Real Fleet Boat manual recommends leaving the last CONNING TOWER block open when boat is surfaced. Then when submerged move the OOD from the MAIN DECK to CONNING TOWER to protect from harm. A SH4 program flaw. Then move the rest of the Deck crew to HOGAN'S ALLEY if you have RFB for protection.

This is an outstanding plan for it raises the CONNING TOWER abilities to maximum achievable by having two officers there when submerged. However I like moving the Deck officer in and out of the first (Sonar) block instead of the third. This leaves an OOD in the third block at all times while the first block is for sonar station. Therefore I used the officer with the highest sensory ratings for this move. This gives the best chance of spotting ships above and below.

Nice post!

I must admit, I've never given this much thought to organizing my crew.

I never did either until half my crew was injured. In order to keep the sub running I had to find working men for all shifts. This meant moving some around. I don't regret the air attack. Its taught me about whos who on my crew and made me a better captain. I am confident now of getting the best performance from my boat and crew.

I normally do not investigate the numbers issue to much. I find it easier to simply watch the meter(green) on the compartment as well as the duty section and make corrections that way. I am always adjusting them and it is much easier to use the visual aid to add healthier or skilled members to a section or compartment, especially if damaged, and remove wounded or less skilled members when that compartment needs better hands.

When your being depth charged and are already damaged checking a numbers sheet takes to long for me.
