It's in the dirt. Scientists say that 1 litre of water can be extracted per cubic foot of Martian soil.

Well, it's not water per... *looks at Steve*
It's not water technically but water vapor, the H2O itself is in the rocks, but it can then be condensed back down into proper water, which is a great help for potential colonists.

Mars temperatures range from +80 F to -207 F
That is the real problem with putting men (and fertile women I hope) on the surface of Mars. I wonder if they sent a digging machine and dug down deeper if it would be a better habitat for humanity. Just add solar panels and if they could find water in the rocks filter it and purify it like on nuclear submarines and extract the oxygen to breathe.
Mars Climate: http://quest.nasa.gov/aero/planetary/mars.html
Scientists think that the climate on Mars 3.5 billion years ago was similar to that of early Earth: warm and wet. But because of chemical reactions between Mars' carbon dioxide atmosphere and water, most of its carbon dioxide was used up forming carbonate rocks. Earth is big enough and active enough that it has plate tectonics which recycles this carbonate back to carbon dioxide. Mars is too small (10 times less massive than the earth) and does not have any recycling of its carbonate. So now the Mars atmosphere is very thin, the temperature is very cold, and what water remains is either frozen in the Martian poles as permafrost or hidden in deep underground springs.

Hopefully the Russians can get there.
Considering the last 2 presidents murdered the USA Space program monetarily,
Need more Abrahms tanks,.,,
Go Russia, I am rooting for you to make great strides for mankind!
Seems other countries care more about killing others, than helping mankind as a whole.
Soooooooo, about that space shuttle replacement....
Ohh 1960s era sputnik, good enough, paying 3 times the price to support our own space station. (Less taxes for banks and oil companies, don't want to hurt any feelings, at least any feelings that matter.)
Gotta save money, cut medicare, and social security, the russians need the money.

It doesn't matter how much or what the quality is...'invade em' I say.

There is no breathable air or food. But the basic building block of a fitness workout is there.

I did a winter in Rochester NY. (close to Buffalo.)
I was a drunk then, alcohol was the only remedy to the constant cold and wind.
Next winter after that was on coastal washington state, they got a 6 inch snowstorm and they called it a blizzard, zero snow plows there, what a joke.
I digress, if I start drinking again could I be an astonaut? My wife will love the separation. ;)
