TMO RSRD 100 realism, cams off, contacts on. Plus my depth charge , radar mod, better hunters mod and darker nights mod.
On October 30, 1944 USS Salmon attacked a large tanker and 4 escorts off the Ryuku Islands.Salmon scored hits, the tanker was later finished off by her pack mates. The counter attack by the four Type C/D escorts nearly destroyed Salmon in one of the more intense episodes of the war.
Now, in the game I added this convoy to be a tough target a sit was , all are set to ELITE skill level. The large Nippon Maru Tanker is escorted by two Type C escorts and two Type D escorts. For extra challenge I chose to start a career with Salmon class in October 44 to test this, happened to get assigned the Salmon. Now, to check the convoy showed up in historical time and place as I added them, I set it up made radar contact at 0400 on 30 October as per history, raced ahead, target was moving fast so spent most of day pulling ahead, also had to dive for planes a few times. Finally, in the afternoon, was ready attack and what ensued was very close to what actually happened, always interesting when that occurs in this sim.
The escorts were zigging back and forth(as were in real life, kind of cool they started doing it in the game) and the flanks were protected, fired from about 3,600 yards with four Mark 18 torpedoes at 6 second intervals. All four hit hit, two under the aft stack which set off a catastrophic explosion(tankers loaded with fuel blow up nicely, see photo below) . Immediately, the port wing escort and lead escort started pinging and heading my way, I ordered planes on full dive and headed deep. Deploying 3 sets of decoys while moving at 6 knots, the escorts were fooled, they quit pinging me, went right over and unleashed a barrage of charges on the decoys while i went to ahead 1/3 and leveled off at 310 feet. the other escorts were speeding in but did not seem to have me, one passed about 1,000 yards to starboard of me, in the all the noise, lost contact with the third, then suddenly rapid pinging, the 4th one had went quiet and creeped up on me, now pinging on short scale, he had me and was only 400 yards away! ordered ahead flank, dropped a decoy. I could hear him drop charges off rack, then suddenly, a massive barrage of charges were deployed as we raced away, the first few exploded, not too close, as we passed 330 feet, multiple explosions shook the boat, could hear pipes bursting, water leaking, damage reports rolling in , the above explosions pushed us from 330 to 348 feet in an instant(always thought its pretty cool it can do this in game).Damage check showed we were in trouble, heavy flooding in engine rooms and some in aft torpedo room.Control room and conning tower also took heavy damage, minor flooding in conning tower. Aft batteries damage, suddenly only had 50% battery capacity. After torpedo flooding was quickly countered but engine room was a fight, forcing us to run ahead full to keep the boat level. After 10 minutes of fighting, we seemed to have it under control, boat was mostly level at 360 feet, pinging started again, sonar check showed TWO escorts closing in , one from port, one front starboard, when they were close, deployed decoys and went ahead flank, two massive patterns were deployed almost simultaneously(elite escorts don't play) several most have been close, boat was shaken terribly and damage report from forward torpedo room flowed in as well as conning tower.Torpedo room has lost all four forward tubes, flooding was reported, conning tower had minor flooding radar damaged, sonar stack damaged, TDC damaged.Trim pump was narly destroyed, damaged heavily an inoperable, suddenly with the flooding and trim pump damaged, boat was losing depth control.
luckily crews had repaired batteries and got some juice back, we were slowly sinking but speed was saving us and escorts appeared to lose us in the massive disturbance caused by the barrage of charges(TheDarkWraith depth charge disturbance mod is great, esp with tweaks) , could hear more going off in distance, guess escorts were beating up on the decoys dropped.
Boat was sinking still, we were now passing 400 feet, flooding in forward room was under control but engine room flooding was critical.Pumps were slow, trim pump being nonoperational was making life difficult(kind of interesting how it affects the boat if its actually destroyed or made non operational by heavy damage) soon we were passing 450 feet. The conning tower depth gauge was only one the read beyond 450, watched and waited as DC crew worked tirelessly. Finally, as we passed 530 feet, water had been pumped out of forward room enough, we began settling by stern and with speed, were able to regain some manner of depth control, was able to get back to 500 feet, bounce between 500 and 520 feet.
Just in time, pinging started, guess they finally heard me, in roared an escort, deployed a large pattern, some were close but not close enough to cause damage.Water was being pumped out of engine rooms, we made it back to 450 feet but depth control was still weird.Trim pump was 80% damaged. Then two escorts roared in and made another pass, close but no cigar, decoys helped fool them. Then suddenly, out of no where three large explosions, boat heeled over to port, could hear pipes bursting again.etc engine room took more damage, flooding was back, batteries damaged, electric engines heavily damaged, we began sinking again, no way to regain control, we passed 500 feet.Knowing we were out of options, ordered EMERGENCY BLOW.Tanks blown, we paused at 531 feet, then finally began heading for surface on a one way trip.
Now, much as the real encounter, it was dusk, almost dark now, ordered guns manned upon surfacing. We popped to the surface and ordered ahead flank, our damaged diesels only making 11.5 knots at flank speed, while DC party desperately tried to repair. We raced off when suddenly, shell splashes came in, but not close. These escorts had radar and one was only 3,800 yards away, with our broadside to him, he must have picked us up easily, the others were further away hunting. Extremely thankful I had a stern mounted deck gun, we let close to short range, holding fire. At 1800 yards, he put his spotlight on us and opened fire with machine guns, peppering the hull, gun crew began firing out 4 inch deck gun and aft 20 MM's were blazing away, Also, we had ONE operational stern tube with a mark 18 ready to go.I manned the after TBT, setting up a down the throat shot when boom, one of his cannon rounds from forward gun hit the deck just at bottom of conning tower, causing heavy damage .Then our gun crew scored a hit on him, which silenced his deck gun but machine guns continued to blaze away, fired the torpedo down the throat, must have have barely missed him.Trouble, radar showed the other three escorts closing in but they were 5 miles away by this point.Problem is, this escort was now 900 yards away, coming in to ram, chewing us up with machine gun fire, one gunner on aft 20 MM was wounded severely and had to be relieved.Suddenly, her cannon opened up again, missed, missed, then a near miss/partial hit, hit the water but close enough to cause minor damage.Deck gun then scored a direct hit on pilot house, the spotlight went out but ship was coming on closing fast, we were now up to 12 knots. Knowing could not get away, we let him get close then ordered 20 degrees port rudder, he sailed on machine guns blazing, just barely missing out stern with his bow, deck gun and 20 blazing, a hit on the depth charge racks set off a nice blast, 20 raking the deck and and some 4 inch hits below waterline, her guns fell silent and stopped her turn to pursue us as she sailed on, large fire on stern, slight list. We were low in water due to flooding, hull damage was at 56 percent, had one officer KIA(deck gun captain) from machine gun fire, one crewman wounded from gun fire. Others injured inside.
Now, we had to worry about the others closing, now about 8,000 yards away, we could not outrun them nor dive. Luckily, it was dark and did not believe they had use on radar yet, were just coming in to the reports from the other, who was now listing, making 4 knots, burning about 2,000 yards away. We ran off away at 12 knots, trying to put distance between us and the area. The Type C we had engaged was now dead in the water, on fire but didn't appear to be sinking. We raced away as others arrived on scene and searched, one coming 2800 yards away but apparently not getting us on radar, it turned back, in the distance, the Type C we had engaged exploded in a large fireball, and slipped beneath the waves.
Worked our speed back to 14 knots but best we could do, engines could not be fixed at sea anymore nor could the destroyed port prop shaft than they were. Heading for Guam, assessed damage.
Although only two two deck gun hits from escort, one a near miss, his machine guns scored many hits.We had one officer KIA, one crewman severely wounded, multiple other injured.Diesels heavily damaged, one electric engine destroyed, compressor destroyed, trim pump badly damaged(never could repair it fully) conning tower sonar stack destroyed, both periscope heads destroyed, 7 of 8 torpedo tubes destroyed, one prop shaft destroyed, batteries damaged.. would only recharge to 65 percent, forward TBT destroyed, deck sonar head destroyed, radio damaged,.Hull damage at 56 percent.About 5 days later, made port at Guam.
Interesting how this encounter went much of the way the Salmon's real life action did on 30 October 1944.Badly damaged by depth charges, she was forced surface into the dusk air and battle surface, managed to kill the deck crew of the escort when tried to ram her, then slipped away into the night and rain squall before other escorts could get her.
While the game did not retire my boat, it should have and thus I will.
I had cam off so didn't get many screen shots as was fighting to save my boat but here are a couple.
