I was just watching some very cool low passes, and not knowing where to share them I thought I'd make a new thread that can either thrive or die. It doesn't matter which, it's just a couple of breathtaking sights that are usually only seen by those who can attend airshows.

Beautiful!

Regarding skill, Lou Drendel, in one of his books on the Huey, describes going for a lengthy ride in one. He mention the fact that unlike a standard aircraft, the helicopter is inherently unstable and requires that the pilot keep his hands on both sticks at all times. This means he can never relax, even for a few seconds. That takes a lot of stamina and mental exertion as well.

I can remember riding on a huey, "sitting in the door" as they say, and watching 4 other hueys that were abreast of us. We were all moving along at a very good rate of speed, and I was stunned at how the other 4 were constantly up, down, up, down, etc, not holding altitude well at all.

Later on the ground I commented about that, asking if their pilots were sober. (joking) Thing is, they were looking at me seeing the same thing. Its just that in the one you are riding on, you don't feel it or notice it.

I was in the Civil Air Patrol juniors program when I was 13. Not only rode in one, it was a genuine C-47, jump seats and all. My dad was a pilot for United, so I've ridden in a B-377 Stratocruiser, DC-4, 6 and 7, plus a Lockheed Electra, Convair 440 and 880 and a Fairchild (Fokker) F-27 Friendship. United picked up the latter when they bought out Capital in the mid-'60s. You haven't lived until you've ridden under the wing of a high-wing plane and watched the landing gear go up and come down from underneath. :yep: :sunny:

United also had DC-8s and Boeing 720s, and I've ridden in a 727 and 737, but never a 707, and nothing newer, so I've never flown in a jumbo jet of any kind. I rode in an airbus to the 2008 subsim meet, but it was a little one.

Flying low you kill incests. It would not work in a fast moving aircraft but in Vietnam Loach(OH-6) pilots would fly very low sometimes just off the ground in open terrain.Their job was to find enemy resistance and when they found it they called in AH-1s flying above them.

The Loach pilots would see the splats of bugs on the windscreen especially the splats of biting incests which have blood in their stomachs they would know that they where getting very close to an enemy position that was well disciplined not to attack.

The A-10s at Davis-Montahn sometimes you could see squashed locusts on the airframe.

Not the fastest, nor the nimblest....

But i defy you to produce any aircraft that could serve close air support like this plane could.

I do not think this is demonstrated at airshows, kinda dangerous...

But it is a plane I admire, and love.

Many years of service, top notch weaponry, great pilot protection, and tough as nails.

Film does not do the sound justice in person it sounds like Zeus smiting some poor soul.Nothing like a fart at all but like a combination of a freight train going 120mph and the crack of very close lighting to be on the receiving end must be sheer terror of course they experience the impact before they hear the roar.In 1991 the Iraqis called the A-10 whispering death.

In modern day COIN operations the GAU-8 does not use the DU rounds instead using HEI(High Explosive Incendiary) rounds which are more effective against "soft" targets because they fragment.

The guys on the ground must be TACP Tactial Air Control Party Air Force special forces that go through US Army jump school and many go through Ranger school as well their job is basically to cordiante air assets so they talk to FACs and sometimes directly to CAS aircraft (the A-10 actually OA-10A/C can operate both as a CAS asset and an FAC at the same time).

For every winner there is usually at least one loser. When the USAAF was looking for a long-range heavy bomber the settled on Boeing's B-29 Superfortress. If the B-29 had for any reason failed in its mission Convair's B-32 Dominator might be a famous plane today.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xfH2Id83lY4

In 1952 the USAF was looking for a heavy jet bomber. The Boeing B-52 won the contracts and is today a legend. Convair designed an built a jet-powered successor to the B-36 in an attempt to wing the prize.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fFWH8aaQkmk

America had the B-52. Britain had the 3 Vs - Valiant, Victor and Vulcan. The Russians also had a first-generation heavy jet bomber - The Myasishchev M-4 "Bison".
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xzDglHNqYU0

And lastly one of my all-time favorites: The North American B-45 Tornado, jet replacement for the B-25.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fFWH8aaQkmk

I think one factor that hurt the YB-60 was that the USAF was never fully satisfied with the B-36.Boeing on the other hand had already learned much with the B-47 design and the B-52 was a natural progression from that design.Of course as with the B-32 the B-60 was a back up to the B-52 program should it have failed to produce. Also as with the B-32 the Yb-60 was a back up in case the B-52 failed to pan out or (crossed fingers) congress allowed the USAF to have both aircraft.

Since the B-52 was a success and no extra money was going to come down the line the YB-60 faded away.this is a good thing as reading a book about the B-36 they actually took B-36 airframes and converted them and they swept the wings buy cutting them out and adding in some new sections which sounds to me like they wold not have had long term strength not enough to last as long as it has turned out for the BUFF.

The B-32 was built by Consolidated not Convair. Convair came into operation in 1943 when Consolidated and Vultee joined together but they used the name Consolidated-Vultee Aircraft.Technically the B-32 was a Consolidated-Vultee Aircraft desgin not a Convair splitting hairs I know.To split hairs even more the B-32 had its first flight in 1942 before the merger.

The B-32s did actually get to fly on a few missions aginst Japan in the last weeks of the war.

I bet the Bone drivers might be a bit over confident there being no real threat to them in Afghanistan MANPADS but they fly too high for those when they are dropping JADAMs.

I bet they where on the return trip to Diego Garcia and where zapping the locals on the way home.Bone drivers are known to screw around before heading home as are most military pilots.

The Jaguar seems to be over looked by many especially here in the US.

Whilst I was at Coltishall with three squadrons of them it was great, about every six months they'd do a simulated airfield attack - six aircraft very low overhead within seconds, from all angles. :yeah:

A spotter's paradise.

And that is nothing. The 105 can do loops, barrel rolls and what not. red Bulls has one and they use it for aerobatics. Definitely a sight to see.:yeah:

I remember seeing that video a while back, and I'm still as stunned by it now as I was then. What a chopper and what a pilot.
I must admit with DCS I'm not really a low level pilot in that result, I prefer to hide behind hills and trees, and then pop up and run like mad to the next hiding spot. Usually right next to a SAM site. :dead:

Now, flying fixed wing aircraft on the other hand....

I love messing about with the Huey at low level. Not that I don't hit the odd building or engage in a bit of lithobraking :)
