TMO RSRD Feb 1945. USS Quillback-Tench class

Eager to test out the new Mark 28 homing torpedo in combat, I departed Pearl Harbor on Feb 12, 1945 and headed for Saipan to refuel, then proceeded to patrol a 150 mile area in the Yellow Sea per the operation order.

While en route to area on Feb 24, 1945, SW of Quelpart Island where East China and Yellow Seas meet, SJ made a contact on 4 ships, a convoy, 3 freighters and one escort it appeared, in a single line.Unfortunately, full moon was out and only 2 hours until dawn, no chance of night surface attack and only 120 feet below keel, too dangerous for submerged attack in calm seas.Decided to rush ahead of convoy and attack after dawn in the deeper areas(250 feet below keel, reasonable for evasion) we attacked after dawn, we have a Zinbu Maru and Ryunn Maru with two type C escorts, one forward, one after.Plan was to launch six Mark 18's, 3 each at the freighters, then turn and spit out two of the four homing torpedoes at escorts if needed.

Attack went according to plan, except having to go to 100 feet when a G4M Betty came out of no where flying low, but didnt spot us fortunately, just routine morning patrol plane. Back at scope depth, fired at both freighters from 2100 yards, then went "deep" and silent since escorts didnt seem to know where I was.As I passed 210 feet, pinging began, the rear escort seemed to find us, then stopped, then an explosion, the plane dropped some bombs, apparently spotting us (MAD perhaps, running rockn robbins restore TMO planes mod) , bombs fell short but they told escorts where to find us, we went to the bottom at 250 feet as escorts roared in pinging.I let decoys go and ahead flank, first pattern missed, the second escort began dropping charges on decoys, then more plane bombs, this sucker had to have MAD.

Then the escort closed in and dropped an accurate pattern , two exploded very close, causing flooding in control room and after torpedo, destroyed some equipment and blew us, literally blew us 10 feet down into the bottom, all stopped with flooded, we sat on bottom(love the trick figured out to do it without sustaining hull damage) and survived for an hour until both DD's rushed in and layed out one hell out of pattern which wrecked the boat, the end,

I was impressed by the first team effort from the plane and escorts, 1945 is no joke.

My shortest ever career was when I decided to do a deep dive and test the limits of my boat... imagine my surprise when I found it. LOL

Was that with stock or a modded game?(If it was a modded one I agree that the crush depth can sneak up on you.)

Yeah, the same thing happened to me, when I first played SH3. I don't remember what the crush depth for a type II U-boat was, but it wasn't as deep as I thought it was. :shifty:

My shortest career was leaving Manila start of the war. I had just got out of the harbor in an S-boat when plane spotted. The plane scored a direct hit, destroyed engines. Using Travs mod, so they would repair in time, maybe two days. Then another plane, this one drops a torp and it hits. I sink from the surface, roll over on my side and s8 to the bottom. Didn't make it one day out of port.

Ah I miss that with travellers mod, sinking.I was hit by a circle run, blew a huge hole in engine room, only 40% hull damage and bulkhead 90 percent damaged lol. I crash dove to the bottom a 140 feet and sat on the bottom to reserve some sense of realism.Escorts depth charged me, survived about an hour until an aux subchaser dropped a single charge that landed just in front of conning tower, behind deck gun and exploded. All over.

Planes actually drop Torpedios? Does it run like a torpedo or drop like a bomb?

Hopefully I can get my files from my blown PC to my new one. Still, it's easy to get 2.6 back to a 2.2 state by deleting a few files.

Posted before, but here's my short patrol.

We left on Dec. 11, passed Cavite, out to sea. Wern had the bridge, I was getting some rest. Wern spotted a plane, thinking it was American, started waving at it. It moved closer, turned out to be a Jap. Wern ordered crash dive, but didn't react fast enough to get our lil S boat under. I was awakened by a blast, the enemy plane scored a good hit.

Wern came down, he was still complaining about an old arm injury, said it had kept him up all night, so he was tired. I looked at him, head down in shame, holding his arm in what appeared agony for him. "What a baby" I thought to myself.

We're not getting off to a good start to be heros, our engines destroyed, flooding, we could do nothing, but start repairing damage. Our mechanic thought he could get the engines running in a day, then try to get back to Manila for some repairs and get back out and earn some medals.

Later that afternoon I noticed a plane circling way over head, was he toying with us? We couldn't move, so we watched him. Finally he came down, sucker dropped a torp about 1500 yards away, all we could do is watch, then BAM, direct hit.

Several men were killed, boat about ruined, we slowly started sinking from the surface......

"We're going under, every man for himself" shouted Wern in a panic as he inflated our only good raft, jumped overboard and took off alone for Manila. I went down into the sub with the crew, determined to save my ship or die, but slowly it slipped under. I tried blowing ballast, nothing worked. Slowly it tilted over due to flooding and headed down for the deep.

That story was better then some of the books I've read. And it came with pictures too. I was going to ask you why you didn't shoot at it and then remembered the S boats didn't have AA. Man what a hopeless feeling to just sit there and watch. Although you got good pictures.

Huge tip Armistead! What files do you delete to roll back trav mod 2.6 to 2.2? If posted before I apologize but could you post again! I miss going down with the sub.
