Hi Kaluens, Just had a crazy experience playing sh3 with gwx and h.sie patch with realistic torpedo's selected. I got a visual contact in my patrol box of a big lone ship which was a large merchant traveling at 7 knots. so i dove to peri depth and set up a perfect 90deg intersect and positioned myself perfectly. setup the tdc ok and set a salvo of 4 fish set at medium speed 7m depth with mag pistols. im using mag pistols as its sep 39 and the h.sie readme says impact have more failure chance early war. So i fire the salvo at her and I CANT BELIVE what happened:haha: all 4 fish bounce of her hull and drop into the abyss. i was so annoyed:doh: so i thought what the heck ive lost 4 fish i might aswell lose another and swung around for a stern shot and set it to 6m depth setup new distance quick and uped speed a little, fired and i couldnt belive it when i followed it with free cam and saw it was on track:yeah: it was heading right for her and then..... Passed about 5-10 meters under her hull:mad:

so i did a little research and already knew about the terrible results for the torpedos in the battle of narvik and early war and feel this may have been plausible, do you guys reckon my experience was realistic?, if so then h.sie has made a great mod although a little annoying lol.Did the Kaluen's of early ww2 have to actually put up with this becuase they must have been Very Peeved.I think the british should have given the makers of the early war german torpedo's a medal:haha: what do you think?

Based on my reading, your experience sounds plausible. I think that, when the magnitude of the torpedo failures came to light, the KM shot a few people. That's the difference between a dictatorship and a democracy: USN promoted theirs.

Totally realistic according to this thesis:

However if you used magnetic pistols you should have set the torpedoes' depth to go just under the keel of the ship. In the game a 1942 torpedo set to magnetic and hitting the ship would probably detonate, but a 1939 torpedo in the game is trickier. The idea in using magnetic pistols was that the torpedo senses the magnetic field of the ship and detonates a meter or so away from the ship's keel letting the full force of the explosion damage the ship. (often causing catastrophic damage compared to an actual contact and a following explosion right at the hull of the ship, apparently then some of the force of the hit directs away from the ship)

On the other hand, if you use magnetic pistols in 1939 the weather needs to be nice, otherwise the torpedoes will not keep their depth properly as H.sie has modded them to fail a lot more in bad weather. If you decide to follow the historic path of playing be prepared to have lots of failed torpedoes - up to the point of having all of your eels fail. That happened to some boats, even to Prien.
